Honestly, I don't think the relative positions of the right and left have changed all that much relative to each other. Like, some positions have swapped (e.g., free speech), but the distance between platform positions is still roughly the same as it's always been.
What has changed is the degree to which each side views the other as evil. The distance between the positions hasn't changed much, but now each side is viewing the other through a wide-angle lens, making them look much further away (and thus more "evil") than they really are. That's why people on the right think the left has moved further left, and people on the left think the right has moved further right. It's all about perception. And that perception has caused a steep decline in compromise, not because the opponent is too far away to shake hands, but because they look too far away.
