Every poster/dev/whatever can't be fucking racist, sexist or a homophobe as I often see being inferred by the moderation.

You wonder why you face derision, when you make wild, insane statements like the one I singled out right here? This is why I say you are in the Twilight Zone, because if this is how you think the mod team sees the world, you are not in the same reality as us. Point blank period. I don't need to respond to anything else you say, when the premise of your words is coming from the idea that we see things this way.

You see us as some crazy blinded extremists, damn right I'm going to respond publicly instead of taking it to private messages. If you don't want to talk anymore, don't respond and definitely don't make anymore public statements like this one unless you want my pushback.

I'm not even upset or typing this in an aggitated manner, so please don't read any negative energy in my words. I'm just stating plainly that you are incorrect in your perception of how we operate around here.

I was once told, "You feelings aren't wrong, but your perceptions which affect those feeling can be inaccurate." This may be the case here for you, so I'm not trying to shut you down or invalidate your voice in how the forum prospers. Your input matters. I just need your data to be correct so the output matches.

Wild, insane statements...

I get your sentiment, it's just that this feels like a trivial point to debate. Either

A. The disparity of institutions is so great that cracker has no teeth compared to genuine racial slurs against minorities that it's not worthy of moderation, atleast no more than less racialized insults like idiot. Or...

B. As a slur, it's use ought to be discouraged to move towards unity. Which is fine, but even then it can never be regulated to the degree real racial slurs are. Additionally, there should still be a word for when white perform ignorance regarding racial issues because that is an extremely common white practice. We have the female specific form of it with 'Karen' and no one has a problem with that, so there should be a general term for it, no?

But my assessment either way, this just feels like a trivial issue. PoCs need ways of calling out white supremacy shenanigans. If not crackery, then it needs to be another word. I leave it to the poc community to decide what it should be, but its got to be something.
Quote
If you go back about three pages one of the mods said that they're not going to be banning the use of the word 'cracker.' I don't know how they can be much more clear than that.

And speaking as a white person, that's perfectly fine. Cracker does not, and never will, have the same weight as slurs used against minority groups and as such I think it's normal to moderate it differently.
Quote from: Kyuuji
I'm not, you quoted my post and I clarified what I was referencing when posting it since you seemed to take it on a tangent beyond the intent I had. I doubt whether you have a sincere confusion around what precedent is set on a forum level off the back of one misapplication of the term though. Despite that feel free to continue on in your confusion until you have an answer that resolves it from a member of staff. Not being one there's nothing much I can offer other than to respond to you with my thoughts in response to your replies. Which I have done and, as before, it seems like we're at an impasse.

You do seem pretty pressed about that "Cracker Whisperer" tag though.
Since we're focusing on essentialism instead of administrative candor, maybe an illustrative example will work better.

As a black person, if any of you niccas call me a cracker, we will have nothing further to talk about.
Quote
Quote
No one is saying that cracker is even in the same level as insults that target minorities. Further discussing that is only a way to divert attention and dilute the issue.
But why should cracker directed at a user be allowed? What’s the value of that word in a discussion in this specific forum being used at these specific users? What’s the purpose of the word? It can simultaneously not be as important and offensive as other racial slurs (not even close) while still being a racial slur and offensive. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

The myopia of the defenses centering whiteness in every expression of the conversation is exhausting, and illustrative of why this forum continues to have issues with minority communities and tension cross-forum. No one asked to ban all slurs, no one came close to equating the term cracker to any slur used to describe a minority, all anybody did was simply point out how allowing the contextless and casual use of a racial epithet subverts the very intention of this forum to be equitable. It's irrelevant what the racial epithet was.

And to receive that feedback, and reduce it to "reverse racism", is so self superior that it again centers whiteness and white sensibilities that the fact a nonwhite being called a cracker - or being described acting like a cracker - doesn't deserve being actioned. And to be told that the use of cracker is a tool to be used to describe white supremacy is actually really insulting, because everyone knows that insults are no weapon against the historical and fundamental institution of racism.

Really a masterclass in missing the point and lacking intersectional empathy, and I'd rather outline that hypocrisy than call anybody a cracker ass cracker.

After reading the report, I do get the impression that MOBA has their shit figured out when it comes to growth
I don't think we read the same report. Or the same anything about this company.

My thought as well. If nothing else, Era will have to begin allowing topics they currently forbid (Riot, Blizzard, Harry Potter will all be back on the menu). Add in intrusive mentions of Moba's other properties and you've got a disaster for Era.

I get the impression Moba wants to be acquired. The report repeatedly mentioned they feel their stock value is less than it should be and it puts them 'at risk' for acquisition.

I had similar thoughts, MOBA Network seems to be gobbling up questionable assets simply to back up their claim of having a massive e-sports/gaming network while touting absolutely nothing about any of these assets but the GROWTH and POTENTIAL. (All while 80% of their traffic continues to come from a single one of these.) In one of their press releases they tout the GROWTH of 300% of one of their assets but you look into it and it seems like it jumped that much because all the numbers are so small to begin with, there's no actual audience there.

ResetERA.com might indeed have nothing to worry about with MOBA Network, as they generally seem disinterested in management of their assets, but the odds have increased drastically now that ResetERA.com will not have the same owners for another four years. And there's certainly nothing to guarantee that those owners would want to leave things as Cerium had them.

I posted this over on Gaf but I'm curious on your thoughts as well:

What Era has not yet realized is that Mobafire currently has to go through a 3rd party to get ads. They currently are not big enough to do direct ad sales. Buying Era helps them to this goal of direct sell. Direct ads are going to be across all Moba sites, without exception. Their primary audience is LoL and other eSports games. This means Era will be providing a platform to hateful Devs and games.

Think about the Cyberpunk shit from last year. Now imagine CPR buys ad space with Moba. Now Era has ads for a game they barely allow discussion for. Do you think the user base won't flip the fuck out?

Era is a powder keg and Moba is the fuse.

I don't think we read the same report. Or the same anything about this company.
The fastest and most effective way that Moba can increase growth in Resetera traffic is to open registrations.

The second is to stop the "staff" from banning so many people.

They're fucked and they don't even know it.

They also don't seem to care in the least that it will happen and aren't even interested in finding out about the company.

I picture the new site closed with in a week and then the entire mod team is on a beach with Cenerium and laughing that they got a company to buy a site they hate.  And then one of the no name Admins pulls out a gun, points it to everyone, and says, "well time for me to go" as he leaves with a suitcase with 4 million dollars in it.
sigh

Over 100 pages of concern in this thread about MOBA turning this site in a direction that is harmful towards minorities, and yet it's users, not MOBA, that are pushing the idea that racism against white people is a thing and shouldn't be tolerated on this site and are demanding change. Something that has never been a rule on the site or enforced and is antithesis to supporting and giving a space to actual oppressed minority groups. Makes you think.

"How exactly is not endorsing casual racist slurs and epithets antithetical to offering a space for oppressed minority groups?" Is what I'm made to think, not whatever cretinous :society gotcha you think you have about the vietcongthe new site owners never called you the n word

Yes, my big takeaway from reading those various MOBA Network documents, and one that ResetERA.com seems to have missed, is just how much they're pushing their new MOBA Services division which is all that direct marketing/engagement/etc. that everyone everywhere claims to despise. In the one document they basically say "the rest of our business is crap but that's okay because we can use it to test our new Services which will also turn them profitable" and then those Services are what they'll now be selling and making money on. At least supposedly.

The ads may take some time as I imagine most of the users who would kick up a stink have them blocked. (Although no longer can people defend the ads as merely "keeping the lights on" as they used to.) demi already spotted a Blizzard ad on the site in the midst of their "hang Kotick" period:

Perhaps by the letter of the ToS (which I wasn't aware of, but makes enough sense), it wasn't as if Labor was some unknown new poster or even trying to hide his identity with deception (which is the spirit of the no alt rule). He was even known by several moderators and administrators on the staff. He is a longtime member of the community, and went by Labor when this community was on another forum. Him not telling people who are aware of who is that "hey, I assumed the handle I've been using in this community for a long time and had my closed/deleted my preceding account" comes off as insincere. Especially since the timing of the person who permed him came two hours after they said they were going to bed, while Labor was being critical of the administration in the mean time. It reads as disingenuous.

Resetera is now owned by a publicly traded corporation that is beholden to their shareholders. Just because Cerium says "they told me they won't sell your data or change the rules etc." does not mean that they won't sell your data or change the rules etc. The admins haven't even interacted with anybody from MOBA yet, ffs. They have zero clue how this is going to play out. And it's glorious.  :rejoice

I checked out famiboards and it seems weirdly normal for a forum created by nintendo era exodus

It hilarious that it already feels refreshing to scroll to this post

Right, and that's the general rule of thumb I give to every one as well. But the point of the illustration is to provide reasoning why contextless use of a racial epithet should not be allowed, and also why it should not be reduced to "reverse racism." Because whereas you or I wouldn't engage with each other that way, a situation similar to that occurred in this very thread amongst two other users and it went unactioned. And it's being explained away by "well, 'cracker' isn't that bad."
Well....it's true. It isn't that bad. For that reason, it went unactioned and I am okay with it. I realize that your argument is that any slurs ought to be forbidden on principle, and maybe there is merit in that, but any regulation of that term vs other minority slurs would and should nevertheless be worlds apart in severity. So long as we agree on that, I guess I can only recuse myself from the debate as it feels like it'd be better for PoC to work out how to use racial language. It shouldn't be up to me.
This dude will literally support anything the staff does.

Morrigan, a white French-Canadian woman, called a black man a "cracker" and accused him of "crackery" and they were supported in this by Nepenthe and other staff members even after the black guy complained. And the response when another black man raises the point that this should be frowned upon and probably actioned as against the rules is a bunch of white people telling him "it's not that bad" and "it'd be better for POC to work out how to use racial language." :lol

The problem with blanket banning "cracker" is that it puts it on the same level as the other slurs, which is a really bad look

It's been the rule as far back as I can remember. Account deletions are meant to be permanent barring certain special circumstances; if you think you fall under one of those and want a new account for whatever reason, you're supposed to reach out to staff.
You can understand the optics of letting that user post 2500 times and then enforcing the rule minutes after he made a negative comment towards moderation.
No. No, they can't.

Yep. By the administrator that was going to bed more than an hour ago.

They always make shit worse with their petty bans. Just like the whole thing where they banned the guy for the twitter comment. They just can't resist it. The allure of the power trip is too strong

It’s kind of shocking for an “inclusive” forum not one of them understand the points that Trey is actually making. I would say they’re wilfully ignoring the point, but that gives them too much credit.

They buy the horseshit that racial epithets are a necessary part of "policing" your community from those who espouse wrongthink. That's why everyone on the forum tolerates Soliloquy of a Dogge's relentless need to fire epithets at black people he disagrees with.

Or how they tolerated Enzom's begging to be called the n-word back before Enzom uploaded that video of his hands.

They are not necessarily mod aligned at the end of the day. TransEra and BCT are protected but they are also shit  stirrers that regularly say the site full of bigots. Makes no sense to say they want to “protect the community” when they mostly shit talk that community.

What wil happen when i post in a sensitive thread about minorities and don't explain myself thouroughly? I will definitely be called a cracker etc. and associated with those vile pieces of shit that are white supremacy people and i don't like that at all.
Ah, just don't post in sensitive threads then, friend.

by the by there is something deeply... fucked up.. about white liberalism and its ceaseless hoovering of minority experience and the lack of introspection involved in the process. this is how you end up with superficially tone-deaf shit like "Notorious RBG", or more materially signficant areas like #metoo gentrification and political abandonment. the idea that since I as a white person I'm outwardly 'down' with the struggle thus I can just step in and out of your space without any hiccup to my personal life is pretty appealing and requires zero self-awareness wrt motives/behavior since the surface is wholly spit-shined and a la mode acceptable.

of course this comes crashing down when push comes to shove (NIMBYs, policing/prison, economic policy) and less importantly here where you have a black guy calling out a white chick from another country altogether co-opting racially-based insult used exclusively in America and using it against another black guy from America.

problem is ofc white liberalism can't deal with opposing viewpoints or the whole grift is exposed thus they just shut it down altogether. as we see here.

Even among male Era users who generally support women's rights, a lot of this stuff either just... doesn't even occur to them as being creepy or sexist, or is okay to them personally because they find it arousing.
Quote
This so much in all honesty... I've entered some Era-based Discord servers for online multiplayer games, joined up guilds/alliances/whatever, and I've come across so many of these types of guys even in male Era... where, you know... things like female characters being sexualized/objectified/waifuized are A.O.K in their books... and things like playing a woman/female avatar character, dressing them up in such a way... I've eventually learnt to not communicate with them anymore due to their unapologetic nature in regards to all that plus their sexism/misogyny/chauvinism. It's angering, upsetting, disappointing, and etc not even here I can find a space to comfortably exist in.
Quote
Agreed completely. It's really disheartening to witness and experience casual sexism from your 'fellow comrades' who seem just as unwilling to change their behavior and views as the men they claim to despise. It's like a slap from reality. I was reading some of the discussion around the change in ownership and a lot of folks seem to believe that self described 'leftist/progressive' places are inherently better for minorities than places that don't label themselves as such and I can't really understand it. This place isn't that special - it's another internet forum dominated by caucasian heterosexual men like the majority of forums are. There's not a shortage of gendered slurs, posters freely call people they don't like bitches, cunts, hoes and think themselves 'above' posters on other forums lol. The alt right aren't the only group whose actions cause women to feel unwelcome. Leftism doesn't often feel much like feminism, it seems to mingle only when convenient. But I'm preaching to the choir as this has been discussed many times before in the thread already.

This is a stellar megathread and as someone whose been here for 4 months total I wish it existed as a forum; it's great to read discussion, debates and angry venting written by other women. For example I got real tired of reading what men think of Bayonetta over the years and reading the different ways women view her is so interesting in comparison. I can understand another women seeing Bayo as awesome and/or empowering based on the experiences shared here regardless of how I feel about Bayo myself. I want a feminist gaming forum more than another general leftist gaming zone - I came here from one, I left the other forum after I was exhausted at the frequency of casual sexism being posted despite posters high-fiving themselves over how progressive they are compared to the right. It's sad how pervasive the issue is. The bar is set so fucking low lmao.

I think Era'a core demographic is basically "men who don't want to be associated with incels" >_>

men who don't want to be associated with incels but will readily talk about how they almost became one without considering how unsafe that might make women on here feel >.>

Let's go back to what started this whole "cracker" talk to begin with:

When asked as to why continue working under MOBA Nepenthe said "So long as MOBA allows me to continue banning stupid crackery"

When questioned as to what she meant by "crackery" she replied with "White people nonsense"

That being established by an admin the question everyone should now have is why focus your efforts on "white people nonsense" and not just nonsense in general? It instantly creates a negative and devisive atmosphere and goes against the founding principles with which this place got created in the first place. That the rest of the team endorses it and not find that brick road laid in front as problematic is very telling of what this place has suddenly become.

Let's see how this turns out
