Ok so I’m a guy with a bachelor’s degree biology from the US. I work in an energy R&D company. There’s this guy who I always admired for being smart and hard working.

He’s famous in our work for being the guy you call to get shit done. He has a PhD in chemical engineering (also from the US) and is working on high-impact energy projects.

A friend of mine had us meet after work for dinner and drinks, and the PhD guy was there. We were talking about energy and the world and he brought up how annoying environmental policy is. I politely began sharing my opinion on this matter and how climate change has a significant impact on how we proceed in the future.


He disagreed with that, and began mocking and arguing… in a very childish way. Now look, I don’t mind a good discussion on the matter, and I’m always open to hear opposing views. but this guy’s arguments were VERY flawed, and unbecoming of a guy who has a freaking PhD!

Some of his arguments were basically:
1- you drive a car yet you care about climate change.

2- you work in energy sector yet you care about climate change.

3- NASA is lying because how can you measure Earth’s temperature.

4- we’re looking for new sources of energy because fossil fuels aren’t sustainable. (This one is at least half sensible but no matter how hard I explained he wouldn’t agree that sustainability and environment go hand in hand)

5- You can’t prove it with exhaustive detail, so your argument is weak. (I tried pointing out that it’s a full field of study and my job isn’t to educate him, but nope)

6- There’s no direct cause-effect relationship between fossil fuels and climate change.

Anyway, my opinion of him completely shifted, but my god, did I get a harsh dose of reality. I thought that a scientific PhD holder, and someone who studied in a foreign country, would at least have a good understanding of a complex subject like this, and he would be able to argue with the big picture in his mind, but nope!

I came out from that discussion a bit discouraged about the state of education, but with a huge boost to my ego. You see I was delaying getting my PhD because I thought I wasn’t ready intellectually, but if a guy like that can do it. I think I’m set.

To clarify, theres no such thing as zoning for rental apartments - you zone for size/density, it can be rental or it can be for ownership (condos). No one is forcing anything.

While you, theoretically over a very very long period of time, can create scarcity of detached single family homes, the overall market should be cheaper because there are more options.

I don't want it to be thought that I don't understand the pain of verbal abuse. I have also both witnessed and experienced it. I grew up a femme Black queer kid in a rough neighborhood; I have experienced verbal abuse that escalated into full-on physical abuse, from peers and loved ones. I still get it just walking down the street. I have also experienced domestic abuse. I mean, to be a mod is to learn to tolerate a certain level of "verbal" abuse.

These experiences, especially from a Queer Black perspective, have come in handy on many occasions. But they have also rendered me dissensitized to certain things. Perhaps overly so.

My interest in the franchise wasn't all that high, but I did enjoy the movies and played a ton of the PS2/Xbox/GC games back in the day as a kid. The little interest I had completely died when she displayed her true self. As a Portuguese, people will forever say things like "oh but she was a teacher here!
