Gonna get some brown on my nose here for this, but I think it needs to be said and I truly do mean this. The staff in the last month or so has surprised me with how well the have handled some wildly varying situations one right after another despite the various events literally spanning the globe and the social spectrum. They have encountered a wide variety of hype, disgust, drama, and just general disarray. First off let me preempt this statement by saying that I am by no means comparing these situations to one another by their importance or anything like that. I am also not trying to downplay any topic that I don't mention here. I am just mentioning the big situations that I myself have noticed in my very limited travels on here. I only mean this as a compliment to how the Era staff have been able to handle it all in a relatively short period of time. They have walked and chewed bubblegum while also doing mental calculus while doing a jumping puzzle at the same time as far as I am concerned.


In the last month or so we have seen the rise of Elden Ring as THE talking point of the gaming side which promptly flooded the section with drama, hype, questions, debates, and technical breakdowns. Despite the flood of threads the staff have handled these with poise and a readiness to let people reasonably engage despite the emotions and the hype surrounding it. Including the discussions of an "easy mode" which I know has been a hot button topic for the community for awhile now.


Then we have the whole Will Smith thing and I am not going to get too far into that, but I will say that I support the measures that the staff took by shutting things down rather than just letting them devolve further into hostility and anger. And that is all I will say there. I don't want Nepenthe to dropkick me with facts that need to be said and a well put together post to go along with it. I saw that Staff Post in all those threads. I don't want any of that heat. No thank you lol


Then we get to the truly serious stuff. The massacres in Ukraine. I was afraid that the news of the genocides would be directed to the usual Ukraine thread, but the staff allowed the "new news new thread" mantra to continue and we saw a new set of eyes on the atrocities that have been committed in Ukraine. The people who might not follow the usual thread daily got to see what is really happening there and I feel like that is important for this community. We pride ourselves on shining lights onto important and sensitive issues and I can think of few issues more important than actual real time genocide. Mass graves, rapes, executions, etc etc. These are things you do not normally see talked about in places like this but the staff managed the flow of such disturbing information with an intelligence and a fervor that I wish the rest of social media would facilitate. These horrors need to be seen. They need to be spread far and wide. By allowing a separate thread for the massacre in Bucha and surrounding areas the staff allowed a new set of eyes on the situation and I feel like they need to be thanked for that.



Royalan Nepenthe Hecht B-Dubs and all of the other staff I might have missed who have put time and energy into the topics I mentioned both on the forum and off of it in the staff discussions I appreciate what you have managed to balance here in this past month or so. You all have shown me that you guys not only handle the petty and the dramatic well, but also the emotional and the important all at once when needed. It may not be perfect, but nothing ever is. You guys have done your best with this stuff and I feel like it has turned out for the better of the community as a whole. It may not make everyone happy, but it keeps things moving. No matter the other complaints people I have I feel like even the hardest critics have to at least acknowledge that much.

I am a man who eats mustard.

I am not opposed to ketchup, which I will pair selectively as an appropriate accompaniment. But on a sandwich I am not much for ketchup and prefer the zest and flavor of its proud yellow cousin. As a frequent patron of the fast food burger, I have grown accustomed to ordering my food a certain way - a cheeseburger with only mustard on it. No more, no less. And yet I have struggled with this for almost my entire life, across numerous separate franchises in a number of different American states. I know that when I request this sandwich - a cheeseburger with only mustard - there is a fearful likelihood I will receive something else:

1) A cheeseburger with only ketchup.
2) A cheeseburger with everything but mustard.

The second of these substitute sandwiches, on which there is everything except mustard, used to plague me with self-flagellating guilt. I must have not enunciated. They clearly misheard me through the microphone. I said only mustard, but they must have heard no mustard. This is understandable. Undesirable, but understandable. I will just have to state my preference more clearly, reduce the possibility for confusion, and say "just mustard" instead. There are fewer overlapping sounds there. This should help everyone. But to be frank, I do not believe this has made a big difference. I still receive one of the two sandwiches above about a fourth of the time. So I have spent much time ruminating on why this seems to happen with such consistency.


Scenario 1: Perhaps I am a mustard-eater in a ketchup-eater's world. According to YouGov, 65% of Americans order their burgers with ketchup but only 52% order them with mustard. (Although, I take some comfort in mustard dominating the preference of hotdog-eaters.) These tired McDonald's employees, underpaid working understaffed shifts, probably receive more anti-mustard requests than they do pro-mustard requests. It's probably just a matter of habit. The muscle memory of the touchscreens and autopilot of a boring shift introduces multiple opportunities for something to be performed habitually instead of correctly. In this case perhaps nothing can be done. There will always be a likelihood of error for as long as the statistic persists.

Scenario 2: There exists a network of either isolated or somehow affiliated anti-mustard service workers who recoil so strongly at the mere mention of mustard that they purposefully sabotage orders to serve their pro-ketchup agenda. To these disruptive agents, any order of a mustard-lover is another opportunity to sow chaos and slowly erode the sense of safety and security of Mustardites. I have scoured reddit in search of an enclave like r/antimustard or r/ketch-ops but have found no such place. It is possible they operate totally independently, unaware of their many brethren who enact similar cruelty upon the unsuspecting, and one wonders what might happen if they ever organized.

Unfortunately, I do not foresee a solution to this crisis. I just need to accept that a trip to the drive-thru is a roll of the dice. Sometimes it will be right, sometimes it will be wrong, but no matter what by the time I know it will always be too late. This is the gambit of the drive-thru. We take what we can get.

I don’t think the general audience knows the difference between “proper” MCU and a Sony/Marvel film. The mainstream probably just sees the Marvel label to begin with.

I am not opposed to ketchup, which I will pair selectively as an appropriate accompaniment. But on a sandwich I am not much for ketchup and prefer the zest and flavor of its proud yellow cousin. As a frequent patron of the fast food burger, I have grown accustomed to ordering my food a certain way - a cheeseburger with only mustard on it. No more, no less. And yet I have struggled with this for almost my entire life, across numerous separate franchises in a number of different American states. I know that when I request this sandwich - a cheeseburger with only mustard - there is a fearful likelihood I will receive something else:

1) A cheeseburger with only ketchup.
2) A cheeseburger with everything but mustard.

The second of these substitute sandwiches, on which there is everything except mustard, used to plague me with self-flagellating guilt. I must have not enunciated. They clearly misheard me through the microphone. I said only mustard, but they must have heard no mustard. This is understandable. Undesirable, but understandable. I will just have to state my preference more clearly, reduce the possibility for confusion, and say "just mustard" instead. There are fewer overlapping sounds there. This should help everyone. But to be frank, I do not believe this has made a big difference. I still receive one of the two sandwiches above about a fourth of the time. So I have spent much time ruminating on why this seems to happen with such consistency.


Scenario 1: Perhaps I am a mustard-eater in a ketchup-eater's world. According to YouGov, 65% of Americans order their burgers with ketchup but only 52% order them with mustard. (Although, I take some comfort in mustard dominating the preference of hotdog-eaters.) These tired McDonald's employees, underpaid working understaffed shifts, probably receive more anti-mustard requests than they do pro-mustard requests. It's probably just a matter of habit. The muscle memory of the touchscreens and autopilot of a boring shift introduces multiple opportunities for something to be performed habitually instead of correctly. In this case perhaps nothing can be done. There will always be a likelihood of error for as long as the statistic persists.

Scenario 2: There exists a network of either isolated or somehow affiliated anti-mustard service workers who recoil so strongly at the mere mention of mustard that they purposefully sabotage orders to serve their pro-ketchup agenda. To these disruptive agents, any order of a mustard-lover is another opportunity to sow chaos and slowly erode the sense of safety and security of Mustardites. I have scoured reddit in search of an enclave like r/antimustard or r/ketch-ops but have found no such place. It is possible they operate totally independently, unaware of their many brethren who enact similar cruelty upon the unsuspecting, and one wonders what might happen if they ever organized.

Unfortunately, I do not foresee a solution to this crisis. I just need to accept that a trip to the drive-thru is a roll of the dice. Sometimes it will be right, sometimes it will be wrong, but no matter what by the time I know it will always be too late. This is the gambit of the drive-thru. We take what we can get.

Fucking awful. My girlfriends cousin flew to Mexico to pick up two refugees that flew from Mariupol after a week of hiding and running away from the Russians. Then drove across the Tijuana border and then stayed at my house for a few hours and we gave them some gelato and walked around the beach and let them relax (they spoke no english) and were so....tired and so grateful and seemed for once were smiling.
