Going back to examine the potential ramifications of casual language and terminology, even if it might seem minor, is overall a net positive thing to do.

I am familiar with "master" and "slave" in the context of computer systems, something that's been rightfully challenged for years. But I admit I have never heard the terminology of "slave" used in reference to audio recording or duplication. When I Google it I don't find anything. These articles don't mention it either. I am quite certain that duplicate copies of audio and video are not referred to as "slaves" - so what's going on here?

The term master/mastering/remaster when it comes to audio and video formats doesn't refer to a dominant and subservient relationship, it refers to it being the highest quality possible. Similar to how it is used adjectively, like one being a master swordsman or a master of dance. This is a descriptor of the highest possible quality, the master quality, from which all duplications are modeled. This is a pretty fundamentally different terminology than what's used in computer culture, where the term explicitly refers to a dominant machine and a subservient machine.

I guess I would like to hear from more black people because a white lady pushing an agenda based on an interview with one recording artist isn't quite selling it to me. This reminds me of the push to stop referring to things as blind, which largely centered around a single public figure who was pushing for the change, which came much to the frustration and embarrassment of most blind people.


I want to be clear I am not saying "this is not a problem" - more that I've just never heard of this before and if it is a problem that makes black people uncomfortable I would like to hear more from them so I can internalize that feedback. But I have learned before that it's often a mistake to take the feelings of few as indicative of the feelings of many and I've caused more harm than good having made that mistake before.

This reminded me of when I first started tinkering with computers and added another IDE/ATA hard drive in my Pentium 4 machine back in the day and had to put it in "slave" mode for it to work.

Never thought about it back then but now I have to agree, I hope that terminology is revisited sooner rather than later.

It's just wild to me that master-slave was the dichotomy that took off in a lot of fields, versus...you know, parent-child, primary-secondary, main-sub, etc. Literally anything else.

As the "benefits" like GCU and even MyBestBuy get worse and worse, I have less and less reason to step foot inside a Best Buy. That said, occasionally I find myself wandering inside out of either urgent need for something or, in today's case, for an in-store pickup.

Ordered 13 Sentinels on Switch because I knew I'd have a couple hours this afternoon to play and didn't want to wait for 8pm UPS deliveries. It's the fourth time or so I've been in one of my two local Best Buy stores in the last few months, and it's somehow getting more depressing. Just off the top of my head:

- Walk in and there's disgustingly old computers and monitors and VHS players littering the "drop off recycling" area - it's legit gross and looks like it hasn't been cleared out in months.

- Walk in and they're trying to sell me on just absolute junk: a table with a spread of Funko pops, toddler toys I've never seen, candy and soda, and whatever other junk they might have.

- The store itself is filthy. Floors are stained to hell and back. Literal trash and junk on the floors. The "aisles" are a mess with nothing on the appropriate peg.

- THE CARDINAL SIN: Their inventory is laughable. I get it - COVID - yeah... but like... every other spot for an item is sold out or missing. Inventory is just... horrible. They didn't have Kirby in stock - that just came out. Ghostwire Tokyo was sold out. Every single Apple accessory was sold out except a few random watch bands and AirTag holders.

- Half the store is dedicated to cell phone and mini "carrier kiosks." Like... truly, the entire front area. And everyone there waiting just looks utterly miserable - both the employees and the customers.

- I had to walk toward the back of the store where they've relocated store pickup and there were three people in line and it took me almost 15 minutes to get my game. Nobody in front of me seemed to get anything weird or large. And I hate being this person (maybe they're on break, maybe they have a reason to not care), but it does suck when I'm just waiting for someone to help me and three employees are literally just standing around on their cellphones and talking to each other.

- I pick up my game... and I get stopped as I walk out 20 seconds later by security to check my game. That's not in a bag. And has a big red sticker on it that I picked it up. Not a huge deal but like... what... ?

Anyway... truth is, I miss retail stores. I miss "finding deals." I miss the discovery of seeing a product I hadn't before. I miss there being store-specific clearance, or maybe left over stock from a year or two earlier. But now, every store has the exact same thing for the exact same price - but there's a good chance they're sold out... and if not, the actual buying experience is incredibly poor.

I'll miss what BBY used to be when it dies - and all the stores that came before it (Circuit City, CompUSA, etc.)... but I can't say I'll miss what I experienced today.
