I'm glad you're taking these comments to heart. I rarely comment, but I'm also going to echo what a lot of people are saying here:

    Get a solicitor and stop discussing anything with your ex about your finances, life, etc. It's clear that she doesn't see eye to eye with your priorities.
    It's obvious to everyone here reading your comments that you have a good heart and want to look for the best in people. However, don't give the benefit of the doubt to your ex. If given a chance, most people will bleed you dry. If you truly love your son, then definitely get a solicitor, really think ahead of what you're about to do to be two steps ahead of your ex, and plan for your son's benefit.

I believe a couple people already mentioned this, but it's not out of the question for your ex to eventually brainwash your son into believing that you aren't everything your son hopes you are. So don't hide from your friends and family about your situation. You need a good support network. Don't hold onto the hopes that your ex is pristine, pure, innocent, or anything for the sake of your son. In the long run, it will definitely damage him if he doesn't know the truth. I speak from experience here.

If you're a comic nerd, then here's the simplest analogy: Be Batman, don't be Superman. Think two steps ahead, don't believe in the best in others, and think about yourself and your son first and foremost.

Funny thing is, strip away the initial suspicion, hostility, and defensiveness, and there'd already been at least two 'proper' replies to what is a fairly commonly asked question:

Why are you asking us and what do you mean by "fine"? Like, not trying to be rude, but you should probably reflect and be honest with yourself about why you're asking here.

Personally I think this stuff isn't cut and cry and everyone has a line, because life fucking sucks if you cut out everything that is problematic. I don't care about Harry Potter, but my roommate does and went to that new movie. He has been a tremendous help for me, and there is a chance I wouldn't be out as trans if he wasn't in my life. He knows JK sucks but went to see the movie anyway. I don't love it, but I also don't have the energy to be angry at him. What am I going to do, kick him out of the apartment? Lose a friend? One of my University classmates and acquitances is a Trans girl with a degenerative visual impairment.
