why would your first response be to leave twitter, before anything has even happened, just rolling over and ceding ground to the alt-right
these are the bold revolutionaries who will build guillotines and eat the rich and lead us into their glorious vision of the future
voluntarily cancelling themselves
It’s the Nelson Muntz mentality turning back on themselves.
“Gotta cancel something.”
It's probably an overestimation of the value of their presence, or their social capital. RE as a whole thought it had the social capital to punish the gaming industry into obedience, but ended up just driving away most industry people. RE's biggest "success" was getting an audio guy for an indie studio fired, and its influence is now basically completely gone. In contrast, Twitter has been home to innumerable terrible cancel mobs, and yet still retained its influence despite everyone hating it, because it had the power and social capital to afford the cost of negative behavior.
In other words, *RE has a history of thinking they matter more than they do, and thinking they can "teach a lesson" to strangers, to punish people into obedience, when they can't.
*Humans in general do this. Changing someone else's behavior almost always costs a decent chunk of social capital with the other person, but we very often don't have the social capital to afford the "lesson" we're trying to buy. Silent treatment to teach your husband not to do that thing, cutting off parents to teach them to respect you, punching a comedian to teach him not to tell that joke, etc. And it almost always backfires, because you haven't put in the time to earn the necessary social capital. So instead of thinking, "Gee, I better behave so that person likes me again," they think, "What a dick. See ya."**
**Even worse, they often think, "What a dick. I'll teach them a lesson to not be a dick to me." And you end up in a cycle of being ***bigger and bigger dicks to each other, feeding into a downward spiral that dooms whatever relationship there was to begin with.
