Why would this be a good litmus when it would put priority on whiteness, white people, white art, and marginalized people playing roles that fit within what is acceptable to white feelings?

Your litmus test centers the status quo and whiteness, and what I've been seeing this past decade is marginalized people able to step out from stereotypes and into roles of power to produce television and movies that speak more authentically to my lived experiences. Ava Duvernay, Ryan Coogler, Barry Jenkins, Julie Dash, Dee Rees, Jordan Peele, and others would not be able to make the films they're making today in times past.

I don't care about a decade of film where white people put on brown makeup instead of hiring people from those groups that should have been hired instead. I don't care about a decade of film where Black men and Women's predominant role in movies was that of making white people feel better about their role in historical atrocities and wrongs.

Brown and blackface didn't really exist by the 70s. Look, it's nice that people of color are making more movies than they used to. It doesn't change the fact that the majority of those movies just aren't up to the standards set by prior decades. And Julie Dash directed her best movie in the 1990s, and hasn't really directed anything of note for the past twenty years. By that metric, you should be discussing Gordon Parks' output from the late sixties though the seventies!

keep in mind there are more Chinese students than there are US military members in South Korea. and in much more vulnerable position than students in UK or US or etc in the sense their home gov't is able to economically coerce S Korea into selling them out.

Thankfully, my very conservative in-laws have begun to split apart. The loud, extremely religious, and anti-LGTB uncle moved to South Florida. He ended up divorcing his extremely antifeminist, hardcore evangelist wife after she cheated on him - that was a miracle, she was constantly trying to program my son into becoming a Christian.

Those two alone are the reason why I dreaded holidays, but now they are not in the picture.

The only extremely conservative person is my father-in-law who lives with me. And considering he is now bedbound as of a few weeks ago, and I literally have to clean his piss bucket and feed him, I know he probably won’t be talking about politics. he also would not be going to the table. We are going to have to make some food ourselves and then bring him a plate. Which is kind of funny when I think about it, because I used to be the liberal who hid in another room watching marathons and had my wife bring me a plate because I did not want to talk to the other family members.

I'm the only lefty in my family. I'm always surrounded by hardcore Republicans. It's miserable.

We still keep in touch because we’re nostalgic for the old days but I mostly dislike them and they still think less of me so we’ve never met up and introduce our kids for example.
