Today ree are being all introspective  -

The internet is too addicted to feeding off of suffering. Schadenfreude. To the dopamine hit of knowing your words have an impact, for good or for ill. To be seen impacting others. It's not enough to have an opinion, we also have to make sure the people most affected by our opinions feel them, like a slipping a hate note into a middle school classmate's locker between classes and then hungrily watching from the sidelines as they find it and react to it.

Social media only exacerbated what had already been creeping around there in the 80s and 90s with newsgroups, CompuServe and AOL. Twitter in particular has incentivized abuse, because nothing gets more traction and attention than drama and rage, and watching people's lives fall apart from a position of comfortable safety.

Most people I know use the internet to watch cat videos and listen to music. What does it say about ree that their version of the internet consists of  feeding of suffering, forcing their opinions on others, and enjoying watching people fall apart?

You know she was the one who asked to review it and add a scoring system to influence metacritic.  At the beginning and end of every Wired review is a "Buy" link to the product no matter how well or poorly it was reviewed, but this one goes straight to a trans charity.   
Completely objective review of the material.     The intention is not to provide consumers with information about their purchase because the stance is they don't want you to buy it - it's just pure activism dressed up as a "review".  If you want to be an activist, then write an op-ed or some shit about how morally destructive this game is or whatever, don't drag the credibility of a review publication down.

I read the whole thing and it's not even a review. The first half or so is about how the books shaped the childhood of the author, the next bit is about the general 'trans plight' and the story(?) I suppose and the last paragraphs describe how only trans people create magical things and that the people who refused to work on the game are heroes from skipping out on taking on the project.

In Harry, I saw my own rough childhood reflected. I shared his frustration with the adult world and that tight knot of anger he couldn’t really understand boiling away in his chest.

Is this really what passes for reviews now?

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is finally here but not without controversy. The original Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto hasn't touched the franchise in decades but his smoking habit still leaves a stain on the legacy of this franchise as much as it does on his lungs. Of course there's also the depiction of minorities. The Legend of Zelda has never included many black or trans characters. We had Telma in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Nintendo has never been open about where Tingle fits on the gender scale up until the point that they cast him aside. It's quite impressive that they've managed to keep this series running for so long and no one called them out on ignoring minority voices.

And therein lies the problem. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is no doubt a great game. Truely it could be one of Nintendo's best games yet with a big open world but it also opens a debate about giving others a shot at the table. Zelda takes up all the oxygen in the room leaving creative works from others gasping for air. Nintendo doesn't seem bothered by this as they keep blasting out ads to promote the game despite industry wide lay-offs of trans and queer developers. No doubt to the enjoyment of the GamerGate fascists and their ilk. "Real" gamers can find a $130 Collectors Edition with a nifty steelbook which really makes me wonder just how 'accesible' this new Zelda-game is for poor families. The entry cost of $69.99 is already higher than most other Nintendo Switch games and then there's the added 'Collectors Tax'. In the end the only 'Tears' you will find may be in your own kingdom as families unable to afford food will find it difficult to put money aside for this type of entertainment. I urge readers who feel the same way to donate to Trans Lifeline instead. A great charity that is helping the birthing people that are most in need of support right now. Trans lives matter!

The new game focuses on Ganondorf. Again the old trope of the 'Eternal Jew' threatening a 'peaceful' empire that stood for a 1000 years. Sounds familiar? That's because Miyamoto pretty much copied Mein Kampf when he made the original story in the 80's and used the first ever 3D engine Nintendo developed to depict the story in glorious 3D in the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Many "gamers" consider "OOT" to be the best game in the series. But make no mistake, the game that sounds like a friendly owl cry is pretty much an anti-semitic handbook. Did you know that only a "man" can be Ganondorf? And only a "woman" can give birth to "him"? Nintendo's gender bias is ingrained into their works as much as their love for the third reich. About as subtle as J.K. Rowling torching a gender clinic.

I was hoping that Tears of the Kingdom would wash away the current dread and melancholy of my life as other Zelda's before it had but I just can't make myself to 'press start' to dive into another Hyrulian adventure. I'm looking for a bigger meaning than just a Japanese salary man lighting up a cigarette as he berates the staff for yet missing another deadline. Maybe this series was never good and I've simply waken up to that fact or maybe now just isn't the time and place for another one of Nintendo's whimsical adventures. The war in Ukraine, Hogwarts Legacy... people are dying dammit! I sigh and turn off my Switch, likely for the last time as Nintendo seems uninterested to release any other new software for the platform. Sure, there will be games like Pikmin 4 in the future and they just released Fire Emblem, Kirby, Advance Wars and a remastered version of Metroid Prime but hardly anything that will not fade into obscurity a week after release. 6 years after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo has simply failed to move on from old habits and protects the status quo.
