Women are evil. I’m an ally, but it has to be said. When you actually look at all the horrible wars and genocides throughout history there has always been a woman lurking somewhere in the background. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm confused at the timeline of this. I'm assuming this wasn't recent or spurred by Harry Potter? Or maybe it was? He said his address was leaked a while ago.

One of the reasons why Doug Stanhope’s old forum got shut down was because I annoyed someone so much they had a total meltdown and sent a pizza to the admin’s house, and told them the next time it would be a bomb if I wasn’t banned. I like to think I kickstarted doxxing, but telephone books were a thing back then so I can’t take all the credit

Quote from: Nepenthe
but just as well, there were plenty of white and non-Black people who didn't understand what the big deal was and- naturally- further engendered a status quo of casual racism.

To be clear, Nepenthe is talking about this:

(Image removed from quote.)

That wondering what the big deal with this engendered casual racism.  This person is verifiably insane.
Someone's going to need to explain that one to me...

Some abominably stupid shit a couple years back with hairstyles.. Nepenthe was upset at the white arrogance, as usual.

(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)

the full context:

Quote from: NexusCell
I feel like stuff like “Person X says the N-word” has a pretty clear cut response, but then you have situations like the Afropuff/space buns discourse in Animal Crossing that just became a total shitshow and helped ruin the reputation of the AC community. Like there’s a clear void between saying slurs and misunderstanding a specific Afro-hairstyle, but you still had people sending death threats in the later case.

Quote from: Nepenthe
Of course death threats aren't appropriate for anything. But the low quality of discourse on more niche subjects of minority culture is the fault of both ends. Yes, there are overzealous leftist and teenyboppers trying to figure out their identity fucking shit up, but just as well, there were plenty of white and non-Black people who didn't understand what the big deal was and- naturally- further engendered a status quo of casual racism. I remember that shit, and I remember far more whites who should've shut the fuck up as I did idiots telling this girl to kill herself. Even if you eliminated the death threats, the quality of the discourse would've remained the same regardless.

Well, when the books were steeped in transphobia and the game doesn't have any transphobia, then that statement is true!

Actually, screw it. Might as well post about some of the stuff that's been bothering me. Not because I expect it to change, but maybe mods will find some members' personal perspectives interesting. And just to be clear, I'm only talking about my own personal experiences about how this forum makes me feel unwelcome, not passing objective judgment. If people disagree with it (in a civil way), that's fine.

I feel like Era has a pretty persistent issue with any topic that involves personal wealth. Specifically that conversation about wealth often marginalizes or ignores issues of people who make less than the average US or western European salaries.

Since this is a broad issue it's a bit difficult to know where to begin, but the most obvious place are the numerous "would you do x for millions/billions of dollars", where x is often either something degrading or something that involves bodily harm. I don't want to call out these threads specifically since the issue is broader than that, but they are I think the most obvious way it manifests.

I, personally, don't see much point in these threads. They're incredibly low-effort and don't drive any real discussion. But more importantly, they pretty much instantly divide the community into two halves. The first consists primarily of people who need the money, and vote "yes" (with some other users who do it for other reasons such as charity). The second consist of people who are comfortable enough in their lives that they don't care for the money, and so vote "no".

The problem is that this setup feels inherently voyeuristic. Like the rich are just watching what kind of humiliating or degrading treatment the poor will go through to secure the money necessary for existence. But that's just my opinion, and if other people see it differently I'm actually totally okay with that.

Where these sorts of threads completely cross the line for me is when ableist insults inevitably show up, with some posters saying that anyone who would take the money is "crazy" or "out of their mind". That's just not okay. You can't know why someone who voted "yes" might need the money, but jumping straight to mental illness is just terrible (and even if it is mental illness, that's even less of a reason to be judgemental about it). It feels particularly egregious in this context, because ableism has been used historically, and is still used today, as a way for the rich to oppress the poor. (side note: the increase in ableist insults being thrown around everywhere is a separate issue. I know most people don't think twice about using words like "crazy" or "idiot" or worse, but these words are hurtful, and they are associated with mental illness).

This sort of hostility pops up in pretty much every thread about money, although not necessarily to this extent. There's always a subset of posters who feel like they just want to mock people less well-off than they are or make themselves feel superior. Even in the thread that's currently talking about video game price increases I've had to report a couple of posts that felt like they were just mocking other users. They probably aren't actionable by themselves, but they are part of a consistent pattern that I see happen in every thread like that.

Personally, I make a lot less than the average Era poster (while still being incredibly privileged compared to the entire world). Yet every single time I reveal my monetary situation, someone will try to make me feel like a lesser person for it. And it's just exhausting. Just to give one example: in one of those "would you do x for 1 million", I said yes, because 1 million is a huge amount of money, more than I'll ever earn in my lifetime. This shouldn't be a controversial comment. It's just me venting. And yet it provoked a response that basically said that "1 million isn't that much, and for everyone who lives in a developed society, their wages will total over a million across their lifetime". A completely benign comment from me led to someone calling my entire country socially undeveloped. There's no reason to do this other than to be degrading. I don't want to single this person out too much though, because as I said, this sort of thing happens almost every single time, and this example isn't even the worst of it.

Yet despite everything I keep making posts like that. Because I feel this kind of context, that most people won't even come close to making a million dollars across their lifetime, is incredibly important. But the constant pushback and the constant hostility just make me want to leave this place forever sometimes. Because it feels like I'm clearly not welcome here. I can't even imagine how people who make less than me feel, because as I said, I'm still way more privileged than most people.

Just gonna say thanks for putting that across and getting it out Pellaidh. I'm in a privileged position relative to a lot of trans women to where I was able to afford private healthcare routes, but would still do a lot of the 'would you do X' hurdles for the amounts of money they're usually positioned for. Because transition is expensive as hell and even in my position I won't be able to afford many of the things that would reduce my dysphoria and, ultimately, make life a lot more safe. I've stopped posting in the threads though because it's just a one-note response at this point, as the answer will often be yes as a result because of the reasons given. However much pride I have in being trans and what I've overcome so far, it's nothing that would stop me from doing whatever I could to patch that hole inside of me. Which is whatever, I just don't post if I don't want to and ignore (either using the function or scrolling past) them when they pop up, but that doesn't remedy the problem you raise.

It's poor that you chose to interact with the threads and came away feeling less-than for the amount of money you earn. It's clear from past threads there's a significant amount of people on Era who earn a lot of money, and I'd not considered the voyeuristic angle of such threads before. It makes sense though, and I think it's a good point to keep in mind. Such threads do serve to divide the community and highlight the people who would do things for the chance of a better life, and as the hurdles increase in extremity it does just filter down to who would do the more humiliating things in order to secure it.

Which is all to say I know you were hesitatant to speak up about it, but I'm glad you did. It's given me a perspective on the threads I hadn't considered and is perfectly valid.

gotta be one of the most braindead convos I've ever read on there. why on earth would somebody care what the average psycho (and complete stranger) on resetera thinks about what you have in the bank?

I don't understand how that user could even still post there considering the majority of that forum leans upper middle class. Did he miss a significant chunk of them being able to afford 4080s/90s and $70 PS5 games at a moment's notice?

If the RLM community thread doesn't keep the sewage from leaking out into other threads, why do we keep tolerating RLM discussion on this board at all? I thought it was some kind of containment strategy to let that community fester here despite the numerous threads pointing out how fucked up RLM is, but clearly that strategy isn't working.

Every single Star Trek thread on here keeps getting ruined with bad faith arguments by posters who proudly cheer for deeply problematic people who engage in toxic conspiracy theories and make fun of shows and movies for their supposedly woke agendas. There are people openly admitting in here that this season will be shit so RLM can make fun of it. There is no way to have a thriving Star Trek community or constructive discussion about individual shows here despite the franchise having a massive resurgence in popularity with a ton of shows airing and in development.

It's not even the negativity itself that bothers me. I wasn't a huge fan of season 2 myself but this particular brand of negativity along with all the dog whistles against strong female characters and the inclusive casts of these shows (like the classic: "Oh is Burnham going to cry again? lol") is so deeply destructive towards any kind of dialogue that could be had. Yeah we get it, you relish in things being shit so you actively hope they are shit and who cares if they aren't, you can always fall back on making fun of Patrick Stewart's age or criticize one of the female leads for things that male Star Trek characters have been doing since the sixties.

From the constructive thread
Quote

Kyuuji

Okay, so those threads are not actually about the money, they're about what would you be willing to do in exchange for a big reward, money is used because this is the most obvious way to structure it. If I say "would you eat this bug for a new motorcycle" your interest in motorcycles is going to alter your decision too much, if I don't like motorcycles at all it becomes an easy pass, if I say an equivalent amount of money you can picture yourself using the money as you wish and now you're enticed into the offer.

It doesn't really mean "a million dollars" it means "lots of money" but for most of human history a million dollars was unfathomable, it's accurate to say that now in the West it is not, hence the need for scenario inflation to billion to get away from the very problem you're talking about. Specifically that certain ResetERA.com members can dismiss the million like above the motorcycle was dismissed. You're taking this as a personal affront because a million dollars remains "lots of money" to you and does not to others but that's not their fault, it's the fault of like, the Federal Reserve or whatever, but you can't target that and considering you post on ResetERA.com you probably support what they do blindly so instead you have to lash out at people making just silly "would you do this?" threads.

Also, a million dollars for Kyuuji starting that paragraph with "it's poor that you" because amazing, no notes.

Well said. RLM are a bunch of snakes who chase imperfect content or otherwise low hanging fruit to get those easy clicks from audiences. Notice how they totally ignored Star Trek Strange New Worlds, a show that ended to be pretty damn good, which aired after Picard S2. Anything positive is not "good content" for them, so they'll just focus on chasing after easy targets. It's shitty, and I don't understand how people hold them in high regard now still.

only someone who knows nothing about them would say this

they don't run themselves like a corporate entity making decisions on what to support with a detailed agenda to influence their fans and shuffle money around

mike is one man with weird tastes

he likes embarrassing schlock, ghost hunting, and laughing at the elderly

mike didn't like picard s2

it ruined his desire to see anything star trek related because it will never be like it was back in the day

which is why he "insidiously ignored strange new worlds"

because humans are allowed to have preferences and talk about whatever they feel like

Transgender genocide or trans genocide is a term used by scholars and activists to describe an elevated level of systematic discrimination and violence against transgender people.[citation needed] ... Historians[who?] have described as genocidal selected actions against transgender people, including colonialist and Nazi activities that occurred before the term genocide was used in international law.[citation needed]
