Yeah, this past week has been a sobering reminder that the second you depend on "allies" to actually take a stand and act on their words to support us even if it slightly inconveniences them, you'll quickly begin to find out those who are being performative and see support as something transactional, like some sort of morality meter in a videogame. And in some cases, they'll even direct hatred towards trans people for pointing out their excuses, a minor inconvenience is enough to drop their "support" and replace it with hatred.
And then we're told it's our fault for "making issues up" and "giving people a reason to hate you". Give me a fucking break, I'm so tired of seeing content creator after content creator show their asses and direct hate at us instead.
Is like you guys are a minority of minorities and the survival of social group depend of the goodwill of most people (including, specially, the rest of the other letters of the LGBTQ community). Why do you think older Trans or queer people like Buck Angel hates you guts. Android Sophia realized this before you brainwashed her by threatening to exclude her your community.
Seriously, the fact that people are starting to call you out when just a year ago this was unthinkable for your groups at social media should tell you that you guys are really screwing this up.
I'd like a schematic diagram explaining exactly how a Harry Potter video game became the line in the sand for some of these people. I understand that they've elevated Rowling to a leadership role in the anti-trans global genocide, but politicizing this still massively popular media property that is for most people disconnected from the creator was always going to end up in expectations that were impossible to achieve.
If one were to intertwine their identities around being miserable and being a victim, there is no better way to reinforce that identity than trying to convince everyone in the world that buying Harry Potter shit is tantamount to direct anti-trans rhetoric. Or, to put it another way, if your ideology requires maintaining a pariach social role then setting yourself up for abject failure is of course the only logical course of action.
The whole "omg you can't even do this one small thing I ask of you, how can I ever trust you as an ally" argument also feels like a fallacy to me. In reality people ignore the request exactly because it is such a benign thing. The money Rowling gets from this game is literally pocket change for her. And yet the conclusion from these activists is that if on the next day there was a referendum on whether trans people should exist or not, all the people who played Hogwarts would now vote against them, because clearly they don't care about trans people.
If I give them the benefit of the doubt, they've really just deluded themselves into this thinking and sort of unconsciously reinforce it because it revalidates their victim status.
The less charitable interpretation would be that many of them are well aware of it and are less mad about Rowling getting money and more upset about how they can't exert control over people for mildly straying from an ideology.
The logical way to interpret this failure is that it's a confluence of a few things:
1) Many of the folks who pushed for and helped support the BDS movement against HP are existing extremely online in which there really are two major groups, your direct allies and your direct enemies. There is also a venn-diagram between these extremely online activists and the people who constantly posted "read something else" every time anyone talked about Harry Potter, so leading into all of this they simply did not know that this property was actually still popular.
2) Rowling is an easy target when disconnected from her IP. She's ALWAYS talking shit online and is easy to bait. The problem is that this type of progressive activism always ties back into capitalist structures so her massively popular IP cannot be separated ideologically if the activists follow the normal processes that have already been established.
3) Up until this point, the have been building the ideological rails as the train travels and they've been mostly successful. Anyone who isn't on the train is easily labeled as a TERF or Transphobe because the conflict points were largely academic/linguistic and the cultural conflicts they created were smaller and local. This cultural conflict they've created is not small or local.
However I do think that there is some small part of this group who derive purpose from judgement and victimhood.
when did marecc get back?
Since that wizard game was released. Coincidence? I think not!
JKing, marrec.
It's not really that much of a coincidence, I always come here to sanity check thoughts that aren't really for public consumption and some of y'all really are pretty clever so it's a good place for it.
