As a Canadian who has spent a lot of time living here in London over the past two years (on and off, as far as legal visits to my Fiancé go), it’s utterly fucked. We’re both trans, and the relentless bigoted media onslaught has definitely started to reflect in the general populace. I don’t feel safe going outside. I don’t feel safe going to Soho on a date with my girlfriend and seeing hundreds of people lining up and taking photos in front of the giant Terf Wizard sign advertising the Broadway show. Prices just keep going up and the wealthy conservatives keep flailing about and pushing shit on minorities while laughing at the poor and the disabled. When I first visited here in 2021 I truly believed it was a place I could enjoy living in, even if I’m not wanted by most of the people here. Now I’m not so sure. Immigrating while trans will probably be impossible by the time I’m able to apply, if they don’t already turn me down for being disabled. My fiancé just bought a house a few hours away from London and is in a much better situation than a lot of people but all I can think about is this: how long before the government make it illegal to hire trans people. How long before her house is torched to the ground by some local bigots who want to wipe us out of existence. The country terrifies me.

None of that is going to happen outside the illogical fever dreams concocted online and the UK for all its faults is still one of the most tolerant Western democracies there is.

It does work. The forum culture is way different now than it was back in 2018. You can't change the actual demographics all that much even if the needle did move, so you'll always get boys club behaviour to a certain extent, but trust me, it was way worse.
