fun situation coming up where usa have 1 point going into their final game, with perfidious albion and taffy knowing that a draw puts them 1 and 2 in the group.

At some point these teams have to call FIFA's bluff and just say, "fuck it, yellow card us all".

It only takes one game to turn into a farce for this to all end.

Nobody was dreaming. We were praying that it wouldn't be too embarrassing. The general consensus was that it would have been better if we didn't actually qualify.

What is the deal with the added minutes being so long?

FIFA is trying to get a grip on winning teams stalling for time. It's supposed to make Neymar rolling around in pain for two minutes pointless, since the ref will add those two minutes at the end anyway.

It was even wilder 10 years ago when players would act like their leg was broken, medic would run in and apply some magic spray and the player would bounce up like nothing had happened, and run the clock for two minutes just like that  :lol
Shit got a little better when they added the rule that injured players had to be carried off the pitch regardless, but it wasn't enough. Will be interesting to see if this added time changes anything in terms of player behavoiur.

I think it has, Ive seen less stalling for sure.

Dont forget the late substitute where the player is in the far corner and walks super slowly while clapping at the stands

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/nov/22/world-cup-qatar-fifa-new-directive-stoppage-time

Quote
The reason, Fifa has confirmed, is down to a new directive to ensure all “unnatural lost time” is added at the end of each half. In Qatar it has asked officials to more accurately monitor when a game is stopped for goal celebrations, time wasting, video assistant referee decisions, substitutions, penalties and red cards – even if it means extending a match by many minutes.

Basically they're trying to make the added time more accurately reflect the actual time when play wasn't happening (injuries, substitutions, goal celebrations, setting up free kicks, etc) to discourage time wasting. It's just everyone's used to football where they have four goals, six substitutions and players pretending to be injured to run down the clock but only having four minutes added.

Canada played well, but were just a little naive in front of goal. Hopefully they can pick themselves up and play like that in their next two games. If they do that, they have a good chance of going through.
