What did you finish in 2023?

2022
2021
2020
2019
2018

Since a 2023 thread hasn’t been created, I finished two games for 2023:

1/2/2023: One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 (NSW) - I liked the game, unfortunately it did not really grab me into the One Piece universe like the other Musou games. 8/10

1/2/2023: Espgaluda II (NSW) - I’ve been clearing the various modes for weeks now and finally finished tonight. I had a lot of fun with this one as I never got to play it when originally released. 8/10

Esparade and Espgaluda I/II are super fun shmups. I’d say it’s the most consistent series Cave made. Dodonpachi is great but I’m not huge on the last one.

One Piece DW is good but yeah it’s more for fans of the series. I never played 4 though, just 1-3 (and 1 was bad. 2/3 were great).

Would you be able to link to the older "what did you beat" threads in your OP, perhaps?

Finally got around to clearing Dying Light 2 last night.

Fuck that game. Seriously fuck that game.

When the bad ending is

essentially identical to the good ending, just with a different companion

and every ending turns out to be equally depressing and anticlimactic, it makes a mockery of the idea that every decision you make matters and affects the outcome. NO IT DOESN'T.

The mechanics of this game are amazing and it's got a nice RPG-lite crafting system in place. It's just so badly let down by the story.

Right from the off, I decided to play Connor as passive aggressively as possible and Marcus as soy as possible.

Wound up with the best ending

Been dealing with life shit and haven't really played much this year. Took me all month to finish my first game, a 11 hour VN.

1. VA-11 Hall-a

Was good. There isn't much story and the story is just eh, alright. But the cast is colorful and great and the world building is solid. Amazing sprite art and good music. Also lots of chats about fucking which felt like something different compared to most VNs. Thumbs up.

*edit* watched the couple of endings I missed. Overall pretty nice game. Glad I played it. Time to play the other SEGA-CD Cyberpunk throwback VN with Read Only Memories.

About 20 hours to beat the main story and this game is pretty easy apart from a few bosses.

Especially once you get the skills that heal you when you hit something or skills that nullify damage for a time.
You also have 2 party members you can send to distract enemies while you use potions.

Finished Wanted Dead.

I mean I guess it's a good sign when a game ends and you want more. I really enjoyed this game. It's the closest we've ever gotten to a John Wick video game. I really don't think the reviews were fair. Sure it's not the best looking game, but the actual combat is just fun. When everything is going right you feel very efficient and lethal. I constantly said to myself "that was cool" as my character used finishers. The whole finisher system here is pretty well done as the game throws plenty of frenetic enemies at you, so when you land parries that lead into finishers it feels skillful and not just a qte fest.

Resident Evil 5-I've been kind of reflecting on life recently and figured I needed a little mental health day. I called my best friend who is basically my brother and he just randomly threw out there that we should play Resident Evil 5(PS4). This would be our 3rd time playing together on co-op. 1st when the PS3 Gold Edition came out, 2nd when the PS4 version came out, and now third. It's still fun. Yeah RE5 is kind of janky, some of the bosses are very jank, but I don't know it works. You really do feel like you are working as a team from time to time. While I find the inventory annoying in single player, in co-op you and your partner are really keeping inventory of each other's space. It's just a good co-op game.

Continued my "beat 1 game a month" streak by finishing up YS I.
Dark Fact? More like Dark Cuck  8)

I've actually never played an YS game from start to finish before and I really liked it. Impressive for a game that was originally released in 1987 and a great fit for the Steamdeck.
Will get around to playing YS II soon as well.

Good pick, Resident Evil 5 rocks. Apart from the jank you already mentioned it just lacks a bit of variety in the environments. Very underrated action game overall.

I finished Borderlands 3 for PS5. It was free on PS Plus. I enjoyed the series except the cringe humor but I mostly played while listening to podcasts so I got to see some awful captions but fortunately it was not too bad. I liked it quite a bit, it’s a fun game to turn your mind off. The end parts of the game started to experience a lot of slowdown. The loot was pretty weak in this game but I got my money’s worth out of it.

Resident Evil 4 Remake:Beat on PS5. Really enjoyed the Remake. Felt like it did a really good job remixing moments and expectations from the original. The parry was cool and I felt the game did a job maintaining tension(through more enemies mostly) despite having more agility. I still feels this captures RE4's amazing "use everything you can" gun play.

Resident Evil 4:Beat it on Xbox Series X as well. The aiming felt a little stiff, but still perfectly playable. Does look a lot sharper than the PS5 version. Game was so good I wanted to play another version right after.

Resident Evil 4(2005 on PS4): Still a classic and amazing game. I think the visuals have aged pretty well.

Resident Evil 3 Remake: Played the Series X version and man it looks great. I know people have problems with this game, but it’s just very straightforward and fun to me.

Calisto Protocol on the Series X. I enjoy this game. For the 2nd round I played on the 60fps mode and the game still looks great. Also to me, performs rather well. I mean visually the game is a feast, but I do enjoy how different it is. It's not trying to be Dead Space or RE4. I think they wanted the melee to capture those feelings of relief when you stomp a defeated enemy in Dead Space. Sometimes I think it does, other times the jank is too apparent. I also find it to be a slower-pacedover-shoulder horror game. I do feel the game was itself trying to tow the line of action and horror. This is'nt a guns-blazing game, even though I do feel a good sense of escalation in power. But I thought the game did a good job of never making you feel too powerful and still dealing with strong horror game mechanics and ideas.

I finished Jedi Survivor last night. Shame it's so unfinished because the core game is fantastic.

I actually ended up playing it in the fidelity mode because performance mode was so inconsistent, with terrible tearing and a wildly fluctuating frame rate, all with significantly dialled down environmental detail. Speaking as someone who generally prefers the 60fps modes, this is one where I'd recommend giving the fidelity mode a try.

I was waiting to finish that before I got too deep into Zelda, so over to that now.

Not too much this year so far...

Control (XBONE) - including DLC, almost all achievements
Valkyrie Elysium (PS5) - got all 4 endings, did the Hilde DLC
Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch) - 100% complete
Trials of Mana (PS4) - Did Riesz's route, beat the postgame dungeon and Black Rabite
Disco Elysium (Switch)
Crash Bandicoot 4 (PS4) - got all colored gems, all hidden gems, beat all N-Verted environments, got and beat all Flashback Tape levels
Trails of Azure (PS4)
Mario 64 DS (DS) - all 150 Stars
Golden Axe Warrior (SMS)
Neutopia 2 (TurboGrafx-16)

On deck:

Battle of Olympus - about halfway done, will finish this when I get back from vacation
Kirby: Planet Robobot - just have to do the True Arena, I may cut my losses if I can't do this
Theatrhythm Final Bar Line - making a lot of progress in this, good to play in short bursts from time to time

Fire Emblem Engage
Took me about 100 hours, it's a big game with fantastic gameplay and a lot fun ways to built up characters, some great characters, 'exploration' that sounds fun on paper but just slows things down and an absolute dog shit story.
I'm hoping they bring over the many QOL and gameplay improvements to the next mainline Fire Emblem game.

Battles 9/10
Graphics 9/10
Music 8/10
Characters 7/10
Exploration/side activities 5/10
Story 5/10

May 17 - Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (PS5)
May 21 - Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster (NSW)
May 28 - Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster (NSW)

I was planning to play Zelda, but I don't know if I will have time for it before FF XVI. Maybe I'll let the reviews decide if it's worth playing at launch.

Dead Connection

Ages ago I tried this in MAME. Like with many MAME experiences, the abundance of choice oft leaves you sampling games without a full play. But it seemed cool. Style is somewhere between The Untouchables and Dick Tracey. Anyway, skip to last week, happened to find it in an arcade. Cool game. Can’t think of any one to one comparison. It’s not quite top down, not quite behind the back. Maybe Natsume’s Wild Guns? But here you have full movement. It is pretty easy and short. One or two credit clear in under half an hour.

PC Chasm: The Rift

This game is also available on consoles Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.

I still own the original copy I bought from CompUSA for like ten bucks...

This is the eurojank answer to Quake, although it surpasses Quake in a few details like animations, hit based regional damage/dismemberment, rudimentary cloth physics, ragdolls; feedback such as stumbling, knockdowns etc. which is insane for 1997! otoh it only sports a 2.5D engine like Duke3D.

My main gripe with the game is that all the boss fights are puzzle based and pretty shite it doesn't help that the game can be kinda obtuse with it's puzzles sometimes.

Another gripe would be all the weapons other than the single barrel shotgun the missile launcher chain gun and the games BFG equivalent pack the same punch i.e. the double barrel shotgun the saw blades the energy crossbow gun all have the same hit power like what's the point then?

I had a blast playing through it for what's it's worth, would rate it a 7/10, I would have given it a 8/10 if they would rebalance the weapons.

Borderlands The Presequel for PS5. I remember not finishing this game years ago and remember why now. I did finish it this time and was really underwhelmed by it. Definitely the weakest one in the series. I look forward to Borderlands 4 whenever it comes out.

The Legend of Zelda; Tears of the Kingdom - Took me around 85 hours to clear, only did around 75 shrines, 50 Lightroots, and 40 Koroks.

Evil West-Kind of fun. Combat is good, but it shows its hand pretty early and the rest of the game just comes down to them throwing the same enemies over and over at you. A real slog.
