Letters from Iwo Jima was better than the Departed
« on: February 21, 2007, 11:31:32 PM »
Sucks to be Marty this year.  :lol :lol

Seriously though, I loved the Departed, but Holy fucking shit Letters was just OMG amazing. Seeing the war from a different perspective really kind of kicks you in the gut. All these guys were just trying to get by and get home to see their families. Some of the stuff really made me sick. I teared up when they were murdering the american soldier inside the cave. I kept thinking about both of my granddads who served in the pacific.

I think this beats out Platoon as my favorite war movie.

Also, movies are automatically better when you watch them with a girl in your arms.  :D

so if corny maudlin sentimentality and heavy-handed antiwar commentary is all it takes to make your mangina gush, might i suggest house of sand and fog which you will undoubtedly herald as the greatest movie ever right before your brain dissolves into menses

A lot of movies would have been better if a better director was involved.  Doesn't mean it's not a great film.

Looks like a very good movie to me. I want to see it along with Babel and Children of Men. Right now I doubt any movie of 2006 will impress me more than The Departed though

Letters From Iwo Jima was written by the same guy who wrote Crash therefore it CANNOT be a good movie.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
PS: Crash is the largest, most corn-filled turd ever laid by Hollywood.

Babel looks so interesting to me. But like I said yesterday, the prospect of Brad Pitt acting in a dramatic movie is not good.

He was great in 12 Monkeys, but even there he wasn't in a serious, dramatic role.

I bought Crash on DVD after hearing all the good reviews, and was pleasantly disappointed. Paul Haggis is the shittiest writer working in Hollywood (or at least the shittiest "revered" writer).

Eastwood flicks review well.  They're generally emotionally manipulative or overly sentimental piles of shit, though.  Critics go gay for that stuff if a big name (like Clint) is behind it.  See also Gump.

Whoops I got it wrong. You're name is Patrick and you just released a good album.

Anyway, all arts elicit emotional responses from people. To blow certain art off because it's "emotionally manipulative" makes little sense. Is Huckleberry Finn "emotionally manipulative" because of the way Twain uses the anti-slavery/racism underlining?

don't be a buttfuck. there's deliberate, mechanical manipulation that stems from calculation; and there's the honest sentiment of a director more concerned with his own vision than eliciting a targeted response from an audience. it's what separates the michael bays and steven spielbergs from the real talents and visionaries. it's the difference between danielle steel and james joyce, fagabag.

Patrick, released a good album?  Tell me what's going on?  In jokes are only good if other people are in.

Quote

How does it not?  Sentimental IS NOT a compliment, you know.  When the emotion is out on parade to the degree that a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow can see it, it's not a very impressive display.

It's subjective, of course, but there are movies that are so overtly sentimental that any merit they have is immediately written off, like Gump and Million Dollar Baby.

Okay, let me put it in simplest possible terms:  Anything you see in a movie that would be more fitting in a soap opera or a lifetime original movie is overly sentimental.  Forrest Gump, Million Dollar Baby, the prime mover in these movies is sentimentalism.  Both of those movies could've easily been Lifetime movies  Fuck, Gump is a nostalgia piece.
