Well, this will get Russian nuclear weapons...let's see...a maximum of 650 km closer to western and central Europe.

 :larry

I am sure the threat level of Europe going up by a fraction of a per cent is not going to change things much.

I think it is now safe to say that Putin's Grand Ukrainian Misadventuretm has put to rest this myth that he is some 4-dimensional geopolitical chess mastermind and is actually just a boastful little bully with a big stick.

Putin often made the right calculations when starting his 'short wars' but no one in Europe wants to go back to an age of imperialism.
Not to mention that after the COVID crisis his timing couldn't have been worse.

Putin probably didn't realize that his speech for 'domestic consumption' would go viral and would be interpreted as a declaration of war on all of Europe.
Millions of Europeans are pissed off in general because of COVID and then Vladimir started this shit.

There is speculation that if they do this without declaring war the Belarus planes would effectively be "pirates" and Poland would be in their right to shoot them out of the sky as it would be unclear who they would attack.

actually curious what china thinks of all this

like if banning from swift and all the sanctions can literally destroy a country as everyone keeps implying, what countermeasures can they prepare to avoid a similar situation

or they're just nowhere near as bad off as russia to begin with

Not an international finance expert (or even an amateur), but I imagine that if a country that has built its wealth by being the production line for the rest of the world is cut off from international finance systems, that would be pretty bad.

Edit: Just like Russia, which has built the wealth of a few oligarchs by being the energy supplier to almost all of Europe.

I am not politically savvy. Here are my stupid thoughts.

- Everyone seems ready to declare early victory or are otherwise saying Putin's fucked himself... has it even been a week yet? This could go on for months or years.
- I don't think Putin is as dumb as everyone seems to assume. The individual units of the Russian military may not be world-class but there's probably some larger, long-term strategy in play.
- Putin clearly wants to goble up what he can before they join NATO. I don't think he'd ever attack NATO, so the nations outside it are his only chance for expansion.
- I have a gut feeling Russia will use a total of 1 nuclear weapons against Ukraine. US using two in WW2 and Russia never getting to might feel like a slight. This would let Russia flex its might and enter the history books, while using diplomacy to back off any retaliatory threats from NATO (nuking Ukraine technically wouldn't let NATO do anything though).

Maybe I'm totally wrong, who knows. 🤷

Russia can (should) win a war against Ukraine, but at what cost? Putin has united basically the entire world against him, and I think from that point of view he has fucked himself and Russia as a whole.

it depends on how closely you've been following the situation, how much you've been reading...but also how accurate any of that information might even be, so everyone's takes could be wrong

re: quick victory - there's been plenty of talk that Russia expected to have taken multiple major cities day 1 and doesn't have resources for more than 10 days, and every day costs them millions, which they already cannot afford

if they "win" tomorrow, Ukraine says ok we now surrender and will be your puppets, but sanctions remain in place and they stay ejected from SWIFT, then both Russia AND Ukraine are now economically isolated and fucked

Germany just woke up and have committed to re-arming which is absolutely historic, and it also sounds like they're going to try to ease off on reliance on Russian energy, so regardless of the outcome of the war this is a new wrinkle (Putin isn't stupid and expected this and is totally cool with it?)

re: nuking Ukraine...I mean...the whole point of this is wanting to own the place and re-incorporate it, they don't want a destroyed, irradiated husk, if anything they will nuke places they know they cannot have (and trigger MAD in the process, WW3)

you say Putin's not stupid but then say he will use nukes  :-\  ANY use of nukes is just...the end for Russia, if by some miracle they saw no retaliation, they would be a global pariah and economically shrivel into nothingness

I mean China is its own thing too and they don't want a neighbor who lobs nukes around, even if not at them (yet)

Russia bombs Kharkiv and commits some additional war crimes during 'negotiations'.
Dozens reported dead and hundreds wounded. They've also bombed market places and super markets in several cities.

The Swiss are violating their neutrality:
GENEVA, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Swiss President Ignazio Cassis said on Sunday that it was "very probable" that neutral Switzerland would follow the European Union (EU) on Monday in sanctioning Russia and freezing Russian assets in the Alpine country.

Cassis, interviewed on French-language Swiss public television RTS, said that the seven-member Federal Council would meet on Monday and review recommendations by the departments of finance and economy.

Asked whether Switzerland -- a major financial centre and commodities trading hub -- would follow the EU in freezing Russian assets, he said: "It is very probable that the government will decide to do so tomorrow, but I cannot anticipate decisions not yet taken."

Russia seems to be dumping old inventory:

If the EU accepts Ukraine could soon become a member.
I doubt they're willing to go this far though but the general thinking in the EU is that once Putin takes Ukraine he will move on Georgia, Moldova and the Baltics next.

Russian state media accidentally released a piece meant to be published after their victory on February 26th.

It is clear they did not expect the west to stand up for Ukraine and prevent the formation of a new Russian Empire.

 :hmm

I was actually thinking about this earlier

there's been reporting that Zelensky's bearing and speech have been pivotal in the response we've seen:

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/27/world/europe/volodymyr-zelensky-ukraine-russia.html

Quote
But Mr. Zelensky has also inspired European leaders to do more for Ukraine. Appearing onscreen during the emergency summit meeting of European Union leaders three days ago, on Feb. 24, he gave a passionate 10-minute speech that moved some reluctant leaders to endorse a harsher package of economic sanctions on Russia, a senior European official said.

His intervention will be part of history, said the official, who was in the room. It was very emotional, leaders were deeply affected.

The silence in the room was impressive and the impact was clear, the official added, and it was his impression that it made a major difference in persuading more reluctant countries, like Germany, Italy and Hungary, to agree to tougher financial and banking sanctions and the delivery of defensive weapons to Ukraine.

“This may be the last time you see me alive,” Mr. Zelensky said.

now imagine if it was Angela Merkel or Hillary Clinton in the exact same position trying to give such a speech

would it have worked?

I don't say this from a position of misogyny, but recognizing historical attitudes towards women worldwide, even from leaders

what would the international reaction have been?

Yup, it's kinda ironic that Putin's theatre was dismantled by an actor.
The one guy who called the bluff, stood his ground and dared to look behind the courtains.

Although that also means it is now personal and Putin will level Kyiv to the ground to find Zelensky if he has to.
