Mandark likes the bailout except for the Republican part of the plan. Big shocker.

While I have not read the nitty gritty, I'm not sure if I like the idea of the government becoming insurance for irresponsible lenders.
I want to be bailed out.
I want to be bailed out.
And honestly, variable rate mortgages should never have been legal.I don't think it was variable rate mortgages that were necessarily the problem, it was the lack of disclosure about them. Many people thought they were getting into fixed rate loans or were not told that their payments could increase if interest rates went up. I did a simplified Excel analysis for a $200,000 mortgage over 30 years with variable rate. At 3%, the annualized payment was only $10,000. Increasing the interest rate to 8% resulted in a monthly payment of $17,600. There should have been sensitivity analysis on the part of the banks and financers to inform home buyers instead of pushing salesmen to meet a quota.

Who is in that picture...
Pelosi and Reid sure look happy about the bailout. And who is that in the background? Why it looks like Chris Dodd is having a swell time.
So far, looks like the house is rejecting the bailout. Bye bye today's stock market.
More than enough members of the House had cast votes to defeat the Bush administration-pushed bill, and the vote was being held open, apparently as efforts were under way to persuade people to change their vote.
America failed.

So what happens now?
americans don't want to bail out those fatcats!'"Clearly not a good sign for the credit market and for the U.S. economy on the whole," said Omer Esiner, a strategist at Ruesch International in Washington."

I'll be donating large sums of money to charities in return for tax returns. I just want to make sure that I'm not supporting your lazy ass.
The measure needs 218 votes for passage. Democrats voted 141 to 94 in favor of the plan, while Republicans voted 65 to 133 against. That left the measure with 206 votes for and 227 against.
There's no way they'll get this bill to pass in its current form, TVC. They're going to have to start from scratch.

Late Update: Now Rep. Blunt is blaming the Jewish Holidays. Are there enough Republican Jews in the House to make that credible?
hm, sounds like the bill is going to pass a bit later. Republicans want the dems to pass it, thus they get all the potential blame smh
We will launch our declaration of independence during the month of Cocktober, and create the sovereign nation of Tooterville - located thirty miles east of Seattle in an underground cavern.

I'd like to think this was the moment when the country realized that these people simply cannot be allowed to participate in an effective democratic government, but I know that's not possible. I wish that when Obama won he would issue an executive order sending McCain donors to internment camps for the good of the country.

You're kidding, right? Everyone forgets everything on a 4 to 8 year cycle. People forgot about the Republifun that the second Reagan/first Bush admin caused in the early 90s when they voted for another Bush. In 2010, the Democrats will take a thumping in midterm elections because GOSH DARN THE ECONOMY IS BAD AND THEY'RE THE MAJORITY, and in 2012, whatever Republican candidate is offered will be the one to win the next election because OBAMA DIDN'T FOLLOW THROUGH ON HIS PROMISES AND GOSH DARN THE ECON WAS BAD.
This country is fucked, Obama or no. Americans are just too stupid. History iscicular. In America, it repeats itself every 4 to 8 years, apparently.

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy:lol
When McCain boarded his campaign plane with Rob Portman in preparation for his flight to Des Moines, just as the bailout legislation was defeated on the House floor, he ignored questions shouted by reporters from under the wing about the fate of the bill.
It's unclear if he could hear the questions, but when he heard reporters shouting his name he turned and waved.

Well, my dad's 401k was absolutely raped today. I had him invested in S&P 500 indexed funds, which lost approx 9% today :'(
Gold took a big drop today as well.
Someone on CNBC just said that a representative from Wisconsin said that constituents from his district opposed the bill by 100-1, which is why he voted against it, along with a folksy quote like "I work for the folks on Main St., not Wall St.". Don't these yokels realize that their 401k's and pensions are directly affected by stock prices?

now that we have some distance (like an hour) from the failout, it really kind of signifies the end of the Republican party as a coherent force in American politics...right?
A Republican President is unable to get the Republican members of the House to vote for a bipartisan, necessary financial proposal. McCain has somehow cast himself in opposition to Bush AND Congress, fighting his own party on two fronts. The result is total political gridlock and the largest one-day financial hit in our country's history. There's NO WAY to spin this as the Democrats' fault. They came out voting for the proposal!
Unbelievable. Wall Street and its backers created this mess and now they are going to clean up like bandits. . . .
When you screw up in life, there is hell to pay. Each and every one of you reading this knows that basic lesson and has paid the consequences of your actions at some point. In this great democracy, we cannot let there be one set of rules for the vast majority of hard-working citizens, and another set of rules for the elite, who, when they screw up, are handed one more gift on a silver platter. No more! Not again!
Yours,
Michael Moore

if you DO get to withdraw it in an ill-advised bank run, the cash you withdraw becomes cat box lining when hyperinflation/stagflation suplexes the value of the dollar into the glass table of monetary irrelevance
One of my econ professors (from a good while ago) said that we had precautions to make sure something on the level of the Great Depression wouldn't happen again. Is that a load of hooey?

republicans call this "deregulating"

The credit markets are fucked. FUCKED. They have got to suspend the mark-to-market rules. Tomorrow hedge funds will be rectifying huge margin calls. There's a $62 trillion credit default swap house of cards waiting to implode.
We are standing at the brink of the worst economic period all of us will ever know. And I'm not sure there's anything they can do to stop it.
I'm just as pissed as everyone else it didn't pass, but this isn't a partisan issue. The bailout would have done nothing to fix the credit markets. Read Roubini's latest post. He's now saying Morgan and Goldman cannot make it on their own. And there's a serious risk of runs on the banks from foreign banks.
So srsly guys: to bank run or not to bank run?
I'm not going to get into an argument about who's fault it was. There's nothing that I could post that would get you to even begin to see it any other way than how you're seeing it now.

I fail to fathom how seeing that lack of proper regulation of these drunken sailors on shore leave is "nutroots" but ok.
I'm not going to get into an argument about who's fault it was. There's nothing that I could post that would get you to even begin to see it any other way than how you're seeing it now.

Your assumption is that it was solely the REPs who are responsible for lack of regulations. That's completely false.
Here's some help:
Clinton - Glass-Steagall
Clinton - Community Reinvestment Act
allow me to sum up the specious, blame-the-victim stance of republicans nationwide: "blah blah blah blah cra blah blah blah lending to dirty poors blah blah clinton"

The Great Depression, the sequelWe can also have the war movie spin off: G3RMANY DOES IT AGAIN!

On Monday, the Dow finished lower than when George W. Bush assumed the presidency: 10,587.59 on January 19, 2001 compared to 10,365.45 at its close on September 29, 2008.

And while we're on the subject of blaming the REPs for not delivering enough votes, explain to me why Pelosi couldn't deliver yea votes from people like John Lewis? Yes, John fucking Lewis voted no.
And how about Obama co-chair Jesse Jackson Jr. voting no?
Some economic talking heads, like Suze Orman, think the Dow could drop another 2,000 to 2,500 points before it's all said and done.
Everyone push over an old lady at the supermarket and yell, "Soup run!"
I am interested in how SD would divvy up the blame:
Clinton 70%
Greenspan 20%
Bush 10%
Greenspan and the Fed has a huge factor in this as well as they cut interest rates too much to escalate unsustainable growth.
The only people who are trying to assign blame are the partisan Obamaniacs who have yet to realize that this crisis has completely fubared any plans he had for his first term.
Oh those wacky dirty poors!
WELL IF BILL CLINTON HAD NOT PASS THAT BILL TWELVE YEARS AGO WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
I updated this chart a few days ago. If you use the ~110k post-WWII average, then it shows just how much further the housing market has to correct:

I don't really care about assigning blame. Its pointless right now as it can't fix the extremely serious shit we are currently in.You come to this thread assigning blame to Clinton and now you don't 'really' care :lol

Some people would want their money to decrease in value by like 35% than to give up 3.5% of it. It's like if money was shit (which actually has more intrinsic value), you could either compost it or flush it away.if you DO get to withdraw it in an ill-advised bank run, the cash you withdraw becomes cat box lining when hyperinflation/stagflation suplexes the value of the dollar into the glass table of monetary irrelevance
But (and this isn't me talking, this is my friends logic) wouldn't us paying this bailout off accomplish the same thing though? Hyperinflation/monetary irrelevance and a worthless dollar?

If I understand it correctly, the immediate cause for this crisis is a high number of mortgages that were defaulted on, meaning that the banks weren't getting any payments on those loans. However, if I understand it correctly, the reason that so many mortgages defaulted was because the monthly payments doubled because banks were free to increase the interest rates to absurd levels after a certain amount of time had passed.
If this is the case, then I can see why everyone would want to blame the banks. Predatory lending is what really did if, if I understand this correctly. If those mortgages had been required to be set at a fixed interest rate, there probably would have been a fraction of the number of defaults.

The bill Clinton signed was written by a REP congress.

seems to rely in the internal policies of the same companies who's internal policies are a large part of why this mess was created. This is very true and it is a legitimate criticism of this. However, the terms "conservatism" and "reasonableness" (as well as many other terms) are not explicitly defined in the accounting profession and also rely on the internal policies of companies (for instance, Microsoft has overly conservative accounting). This is a consequence of the shareholder vs. stakeholder model.
If there's some middle ground on valuing something at its market value and its potential pv of cash flows, that'd be something worth exploring.
! The problem is in convincing anyone else that your method is more valid than anyone else's. Most methods will appear more valid in some financial conditions than others, and of course, as soon as any new standard is set, new financial products will very quickly emerge to exploit itExcellent post and this is very true. Enron used mark-to-market accounting on products that should not have been accounted for that way (i believe it was the energy contracts?) and even got SEC approval for this treatment.
