Gonzo
Gonzo is so hit and miss man. But when they hit, they REALLY hit.
True, true. Full Metal Panic, Last Exile, Hellsing, Gankutsuou, and Welcome to the NHK are all top-notch works. Unfortunately, a lot of their others shows are mediocre at best.
By the way, I just came across this seasons balls-out awesome anime that no one's watching: Basquash. It's from Thomas Romain, the creator of Oban: Star-Racers, a solid and underappreciated Fraco-Japanese production. This time around, he's teamed up with Shoji Kawamori to create Basquash! a series about an alternate Earth where mechas compete in basketball tournaments. It sounds weird on paper, but the end result looks great so far [and I only just watched the first half of episode 1].
The animation is slick and vibrant, the character designs are pretty good, and the world is some weird fusion of futuristic and dilapidated steam punk [or something]. The story follows this kid who hates robots, apparently from some tragic incident that happened in the past, and so he and his friends rip through town and bust up all the public TVs that are showing the mecha basketball tournaments. Presumably at some point the main character will have to enter the mecha tournament to something something friendship or whatever. If they can keep up this level of awesome through the rest of the series, it'll end up being really good.
