I think Palin will run.  She's ambitious and doesn't let reality stop her.  I don't see her winning, though.

If Huckabee runs again (not sure if he will; didn't it seem sometimes like he was having a lark rather than really competing?) she won't be the #1 choice of evangelicals.  Romney will do well among the managers and Chamber of Commerce types who make up a big chunk of the GOP donor base.

Another thing: some Republican primaries are winner take all and some are proportional.  In '76 that made their nomination fight longer and closer when Reagan won Texas.  This time it cut it short in McCain's favor even though he and Romney should have been about tied.

The WTA states (NY, NJ, FL, MO, and CA) would tend to favor a more moderate candidate, I'd think.  This time it's McCain.  Who knows who it would be in four years.

Oh, and I don't see anyone getting anything close to Bush's 2000 monopoly on the party's institutional support.  Maybe Romney, but I seriously doubt it.

Palin is too ambitious to just go away after the 4th.

Her supporters think that she is the next Reagan.  She isn't total poison yet and those problems of inexperience can be ironed out in a few years, superficially.  All she has to do is convince the GOP and its base that she has changed and now she is more aggressive than ever to take out Obama.  The best part about her is that she is a willing foot soldier.  Huckabee cares about the poor and has talked about raising taxes.  He might be an Evangelical but the moneyed interests will object and I don't see them wanting to support him.  I suppose they will if he wins many primaries in 2012.

Romney appeals to the business types but his religion will make it a problem for the Theocons who might end up having majority rule.  If they are in charge, Romney might get reluctant approval but his campaign will probably be spent downplaying his own religion, especially if he is up against Palin who has no actual scruples whatsoever.

There is always potential for a newcomer to steal the scene or an old Republican (Newt Gingrich) but those are long shots.  You might have Fred Thompson but if he didn't give a shit in 2008, I don't think he will in 2012.  Even when he was the brief GOP darling, he didn't really seem to care.  If he were to run again, he would turn out similar performances as he did this year.

It always boggled her to watch a guy slam any sort of program that was communal in nature in civilian society then in the same breath bitch about how he didn't get his allotment for dependents (just as with welfare, you get more money for each child you have - not enough to cover all costs, naturally).
