Escape From New York

Still awesome, and the soundtrack is 80's sci-fi heaven.

The soundtrack was actually done by John Carpenter.

Daybreakers:
really dumb. didn't really like it at all.

Mesrine: Killer Instinct
Pretty good crime drama. Vincent Cassall is amazing as always. Also Cécile De France is amazingly beautiful near the end.

The Karate Kid

one minute and sixteen seconds in and I see a "I was this tall when daddy died" thing.  I'm gonna find something else to watch.

~13 minutes in.  white kid assumes black kid plays basketball.  More of this and I'm sticking with it.

~14 minutes.  black kid can't play basketball--what a twist!

~15 minutes.  old chinese man assaults black kid; young chinese girl laughs at his pain.  chinese girl plays the violin, obviously.

~18 minutes.  lol white kid is a total wuss! this movie nails the races so far.  And two more hours of this? I hope the white kid wins the tournament by asking his mom for help.

Also Escape from LA shits on Escape from NY. It's basically a remake, but it's a superior film

I thought you were dissing the original Karate Kid for a minute, and then I remembered they remade it.

I saw the original the other month, and damn, it's still good.

yeah, the remake of The Karate Kid.  I've seen the original many times.

anyway, it was pretty lame.  No one really has any motivation and it all seems to be about race.  Like, the enemy teacher in the original was like this hardcore white army dude teaching popular jock-y kids to be kickass bullies.  Here it is just one really angry chinese dude teaching random chinese kids to be really angry too.  But they're not popular or jocks and Will Smith Jr doesn't really do anything before they start brutally beating on him.  They even say things like "stay away from our kind" when he's trying to mack on this one chinese girl.  Then the teacher is telling them to brutally murder this kid because, uh, his students were caught committing a hate crime? wait, there is a random story about a car and Miagi's family.  nvm, we're already past that subplot.  And then it ends and evil chinese kids still don't apologize to the black kid; instead they revere the old chinese dude that taught him.  And where the hell did the white kid go? he leaves after 20 minutes and then shows up in the tournament audience with the black kid's girlfriend and mother (who is AWFUL, btw).  But they're not friends! the entire movie has two parts: 1) black kid macking on chinese girl; 2) black kid and Mr. Miagi training.  The white kid wasn't part of any of that and doesn't deserve to be in the ending! it's like they needed a white kid, so they found the whitest whitey ever and placed him in beginning and ending.  It is the racial version of having a stack of $1 bills in between two $20s to make it seem like more.

superior version of the film:
BK gets to china.  WK and BK become friends.  Shit happens and BK is signed up for tournament; bullies must leave Black Kid alone.  Bullies now pick on White Kid.  Movie plays out the same, except with the white kid getting his face stomped on in the background.  Promote racial equality in China.

Actually looks like it might be decent. Sort of reminds me of Hellboy [without the fantastical designs and Ron Perlman].

Edit: I looked at the crew on IMDB and now I wish I hadn't. It's the guy that directed the latest TMNT movie and the two guys that cowrote Sahara and A Sound of Thunder.  :-\

The Chaperone is surprisingly good!

Likable cast, Triple H himself has great charisma and screen presence. A good blend of drama and comedy and it's well paced. It's actually directed by the guy who did Bill & Ted and The Mighty Ducks.

If you just want a fun film to kick back and watch you could do a lot worse.

better than the original movie. Better story, better characters (besides Miyagi), better editing, WAY better fight choreography, beautiful scenes and shots that make me wanna tour china.

your play by play watch makes no sense, and just sound like some dude being down on a movie because of nostalgia instead of just fucking watching it.

Race is not once brought up in the movie.

The kid does not say "stay away from our kind". He says stay away from us. It's obvious the kid likes her, is protective, and jealous. Race is not pertinent.

"He doesn't really do anything before they start beating up on him" makes no sense, because they start beating up on him 5 minutes into the movie.

The "random" subplot about Miyagi 2's family's death is not random. The movie starts out with Jaden staring at the wall he marked growing up, one of the marks being,"the day daddy died" signifying a big moment in his life. This was just maybe a year ago. The kid is obviously not over the death of his father, and the way he lashes out shows this. The two people are brought together from their pasts in that scene, just like how Macchio (Italian) and Miyagi (Japanese) are brought together. It's about two lonely people who find each other with common pasts.

Learn how to watch a movie, stop putting nostalgia on a pedastal and then come back.

ps: first karate kid none of those kids can fight, especially ralph.. In this remake you can tell Jaden learned how to do kung fu and brought a lot to the role. The fighting and acting were great and a lot better than the awkward fighting found in the original.

The fact that the white kid barely shows up in the movie doesn't matter. He is not a pivotal character.

yeah, but all of that is just a joke.  I didn't think anyone would have strong feelings about the remake of The Karate Kid.  Honestly, I can't tell if you're messing with me at this point if you thought that "play by play" was serious because I was hardly subtle about it.

Not that I liked it or anything.  And it was pretty clear that the movie was made to do two things: introduce Will Smith's son as a leading actor and show off China.  Like, one of the first pictures they show in the credits is Will Smith, that woman from the Matrix, and the kid.  And what really sells it is when they're on the great wall of china and you have the kid in the middle with wide sweeping shots of the scenery.  That's fine and all because it seemed to work for people.  But that's not the reason I disliked the movie or anything.

I will say that I don't really have nostalgia for the original Karate Kid.  According to Netflix, I rated that a 3 and this new one a 2.  I wasn't even alive when the original came out.

Kuroneko is currently touring the country with a brand new print, and it was a pleasure to watch such a beautifully made black and white film screened theatrically.  That it was a pretty good flick just seemed a bonus.

Its a very Japanese style ghost story about a pair of vengeful lady ghosts who are leaving piles of dead samurai in their wake and the impotent and eventually tragic countermeasures taken against them by the local authorities.  Yeah, there's plot and characters and stuff happens, but its really about creating and sustaining whatever mood the director wants to evoke, usually a eerie darkness, but streaks of black humor and some lovely sequences squeak through.  The wordless opening ten minutes and opening act just about work on their own as a great short film.

Its a darn good movie, but a bit of an acquired taste, if you saw Ugestsu or Onibaba (same director, same 98-year old still active director) and could go for some more dark, folk loreish ghost stories, why not check it out in its current theatrical tour or in the inevitable future Criterion release?

I really like the remake. I thought it was one of the best family movies I had seen in ages and had a great time with it. I've watched my blu ray version multiple times. The fight choreography is magnificent. It's just a really great kung fu movie and I love kung fu movies and stories.

I also think that the acting in the movie is excellent. Say what you will about Jaden, but the kid can act and I look forward to seeing how he evolves. He put a lot into that role and by the end of it, it really felt like this kid learned kung fu. That's how well acted, well shot, and well edited it is.

Fuck it, I'm going to go watch it again right now.

Insomnia (Nolan version) - good, but out of all the movies Nolan could have remade, I don't really get why he choose this fairly standard thriller.  Especially coming from his own Memento which is a far more interesting thriller.

Section 9 - Decent, not particularly scary but alright atmosphere.  The ending twist is kind of boring and brings the film down.

The Good Girl - Good; not very funny, but an interesting human drama that manages to avoid cliches.  Watched it because it was directed by Miguel Arteta who did Youth in Revolt & Cedar Rapids.  I might check out his other film, Chuck & Buck as well since he's a good director who makes neat films about people.

They swear it's not and even said in some interview that they were starting to get offended, but who knows.  I didn't care for it.  It was well made from what  I could tell, but the subject matter registered a .5/10 on the Give A Shit meter.  Guess it just wasn't for me.

:lol :lol :lol I can't believe I used to love this movie as a teenager.  Could have been great if you replaced everyone and everything except the basic concept.  The writing is so offensively bad and everything is spelled out so easy.  The dialogue is horribly unnaturally.  Just :lol

The Descent
I liked it way more as just a tense exploration movie.  Zombies or mutants or whatever were totally unnecessary although they provided many OH SNAP moments

Ghost Writer
Tense, interesting.  Awesome.  Ultimate OH SNAP moment when

Still a great ride and awesome movie

The Secretariat
*snooze* turned it off after about 30 minutes

The Other Guys
The best part literally died way too soon.  But I don't think I've found a Will Ferrell movie funny in years.  Pretty awesome

From Paris with Love
Most entertaining B grade plot action movie I've seen in a while.  John Travolta is still LOL when it comes to buying him as a badass but it was really entertaining.

Anderson's Platoon
Interesting as hell documentary.  From 1967 about a search and destroy platoon in Vietnam.  Some really great moments.  Seeing how happy the guys that get called for R&R are and the looks on the faces of the guys who didn't get called.  It reminded me of Restrepo because of the attachment to the soldiers it creates.  I don't think I've seen another Vietnam documentary that focuses so much on day to day life.  It's on Netflix streaming and only there.  The DVD is unavailable.  But highly recommended.  It's only an hour.

:lol  Yeah, it seems like something I would have written when I was younger.  How old was the dude who wrote it?  It's definitely the tendency of children to try to explain everything in simple questions and answers.  Like clockwork, after Ashton would get slightly accustomed to his new surroundings, he'd ask one question that answered  why every universe was the way it was.  Jeez.  The best line is "tomorrow I could be a dirt farmer in Bangladesh!"

Can be summed up by my uncle's reaction to one scene: "damn he punched that guy on fire!" :rock

Laughable lines and bad acting didn't stop it from being entertaining. The film has some pretty awesome fight and death scenes. But the dumbest, Spider Man 3-esque thing is:

how that one dude who betrayed the team and almost got them killed was let back into the team at the end. That was the funniest/dumbest thing I've ever seen. "Oh I wasn't trying to hurt him lolz" smh  :lol

The Runaways - nothing cleanses the palate quite like flagrant ephebophilia.  Features quite a bit of Michael Shannon (Nelson from Boardwalk Empire) as the flamboyant Kim Fowley, making this easily worth the price of admission and supplies a decent excuse to give whomever might catching you watching this.  "But I like The Runaways' music" is not believable, so don't even try it.

Finally watched Fantastic Mr. Fox. Was nice. Enjoyed it. More so than Darjeeling Limited, think so

I had to turn that film off after 10 minutes, it was abominable. Nothing worse than a film that slaps you in the face and exclaims that it is just so, so so, much more clever than you. Which is why I think Wes Anderson needs to be face fucked with a Sidewinder Missile.

127 hours

Was good.  Danny Boyle's style added a lot to the source material and made what otherwise could have been a boring story an interesting watch.  Franko's acting was great as well.  James Franko in this movie reminds me of Kosma.

Faster

Trailer made it seem like a fun "butch dude kills everyone" movie.  Actually, all the best scenes are literally in the trailer.  Everything in-between the action is pretty boring.

Also Escape from LA shits on Escape from NY. It's basically a remake, but it's a superior film

That's basically the exact opposite of everything I've heard.

It's basically the opposite of the truth, so, yeah.

"You sunk my Battleship!"

Can't really blame them, the tagline writes itself.

I can't believe not even guillermo del toro, james cameron and tom cruise could get that movie made.

-R-rated
-Horror
-Big-budget
-No romance
-Downer ending

As it is, the movie's never getting made.

Quote
“Madness,” as he imagined it, would not be particularly gory, but he insisted that he needed the artistic freedom “to make it really, really uncomfortable and nasty.”
