I added it months ago, it just now came up on my queue.  They went back and forth for at least like two pages discussing how awesome it is.

I watched The Majestic on Netflix the other night.  First time that I had seen that movie in quite a few years.  It was enjoyable to see Jim Carry not being his usual obnoxious self, but it also made the movie a lot less interesting to watch.  At least that's the way it was for the second time around.

Casshern
I couldn't finish it.  It was interesting, but from what I watched the presentation was lacking to say the least.  I just really don't think Asian cinema is for me.

I don't think anyone really holds up Casshern as being some high water mark of Asian film-making.
shit, fucking gaffers do.  That's where I got the recommendation from.  They were acting like it was the definitive asian sci fi movie so I decided to give it a chance despite my vow to give up on asian cinema.  I really need to stop reading their movie thread when I'm bored.  They can hype and circle jerk over anything

Gaffers are distinguished mentally-challenged fanboys. Asian sci-fi/fantasy movies will be hyped to the moon by fanboys who think AZN = cool, but will 99% of the time turn out to be unwatchable crap. I used to hang out a lot in Asian cinema forums back around 2004 or whenever this came out, and I remember a lot of people being pumped for Casshern and importing expensive Japanese copies of the DVD (my dumb self included) and then everyone realized that it was complete garbage and never spoke of it again. This also happened with D-Wars.

good news/bad news time.

Rutger Hauer just scored a prime role as Van Helsing in an upcoming yet another adaptation of Dracula.  Yea!  He's the man, I like that dude!

Oh, and its being directed by Dario Argento, apparently being funded by people who haven't seen any of his recent films.  Fucking Shit!

Rutger Hauer never stopped being awesome, but he's pretty much the poster child for "Promising Careers Gone Awry".  You could almost call him the Danish, lower-rent Micheal Caine, as he has a propensity to appear in total shit and to also not suck no matter how much the movie surrounding him does.

Blind Fury is a superior B-movie from the late 80's, an American remake of the Japanese blind samurai series Zatoichi and it completely fucking rocks.  He's also been good in smaller parts in big films (Sin City, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Batman Begins) and in the multitudes of direct to video films and TV guest appearances he's done.

As a former premium cable late night watcher, I got to see shitloads of crappy, low budget movies that skipped the theatrical circut, but usually had at least one or two redeeming qualities, its how I got to be a big fan of Dolph Lundgren, Marc Dacascos, and yes Rutger Hauer also stood tall as one of the kings of the 90's-era direct to video industry.

Also, since this is the movie news topic, well, how do you guys feel about a Preacher movie finally coming together?

Casshern's a bland, inscrutable movie with some great special effects/art style. It's GAF, though, so it's either "ZOMG GREATEST MOVIE EVAR" or "total garbage, not even worth a rental".

This, times 100. It's so. Freaking. Ponderous. How can it be that gorgeous and uninteresting at the same time?

I just watched it last night - not many revelations if you've been sort of paying attention to all the banking hijinks, but it lays it all out in a very coherent story. Also, Matt Damon was a surprisingly great narrator.

If you got any Xanax, right before you put the movie on would be a good time to take it.

I watched Inside Job last night, too. Nicely edited, good interviews (Mishkin going bu bu bu bu for 30 seconds) and Damon does a good job narrating. The ending shot and final scriptline is a bit much though. hehe

Also watched four docus at the film festival three weeks ago, the two most prominent ones being Tears of Gaza and Russian Lessons. Tears of Gaza is about the Israeli bombing campaign on Gaza in 2009, consisting of about 90% amateur footage and some interviews. This is more of a recruitment movie to the palestinian cause than it is a documentary, relies very heavily on inciting an emotional response. I usually like the more informative type of docus, so didn't enjoy this too much. Some crazy fucking footage in there though, but also some very unnecessary arranged scenes. Here's a trailer:

Russian Lessons is a docu by Andrei Nekrasov and Olga Konskaya about the war between Russia and Georgia in 2008. The two co-directors decide to get as close to the frontline as possible from opposite directions, eventually meeting up as the conflict ends, and interviewing people along the way. The film mostly deals with the disparity of the russian-controlled media reports with what actually happened, doctored footage and so on. But also details the history of ethnic cleansing in the area from the fall of the USSR until now, which became quite relevant with the recent terror bombing of Domodedovo Airport. One of the better documentaries I've seen in a while, really recommend it. I think the whole thing is up in parts on youtube, but it's in russian with georgian subtitles hehe. Oh well. Here is a sample clip:

They just did a test screening for Hangover 2:
Quote
Hey! So I live in La Mesa, CA which is just outside of San Diego.  Last week my friend and I were approached and asked if we'd like to attend a free screening of a "new comedy coming out later this year". We don't get a lot of screenings out here so we were kind of psyched. We asked who was in it? The woman inviting us had no clue. She genuinely didn't know. We were just hoping this wasn't going to be some Rob Schnieder Shit Show.

We show up to the theater on Thursday night and there was a pretty big line. Everyone was holding their blue invitations but no one knew what the movie was. They were asking questions to certain people on line and then pulling them off line. It was pretty funny. We looked around and saw no one in suits (outside of the security guards) and figured this must not be a big studio movie.

When we finally got in to the theater the guy comes out and tells us that he has good news and bad news. The good news was that the movie we were about to see was THE HANGOVER PART 2. Everyone went crazy! Loud hooting and hollering!! I looked around and saw Todd Phillips standing on the side of the theater, alone. There were no studio guys around him. It was actually kind of weird. By the way, the bad news was that we couldn't tell anyone we saw it! (whoops). We were sworn to secrecy as apparently they had just finished filming the movie and this was the VERY FIRST PUBLIC SCREENING.

Anyway, on to the movie. IT ABSOLUTELY FUCKING ROCKED.

It is similar to the first one in some ways, except it totally ups the insanity level. It is seriously one of the most fucked up studio comedies to ever be made. I am not even sure how much of what we saw will actually be in the ultimate release, because some of it seemed just too crazy.

It opens in a similar way, Phil makes a call, he's on the roof of a skyscraper. Says we fucked up. Apologizes. The crowd went crazy.  And then it cuts to a week earlier where we learn that Stew is getting married to a new girl, her parents are from Thailand and the wedding is at some resort over there. Stew is still "emotionally scarred" from what happened 2 years ago in Vegas. Alan (Zack Galafinakis) is not invited to the wedding and is really upset about it. Phil and Doug end up convincing Stew to invite him.

The truth is I don't want to spoil what happens over there. Here is what I will say. The guys (and there wives) go to some beautiful Thailand resort. The guys make a toast and Phil, Stew and Alan wake up in Bangkok the next morning. More fucked up and more fucked over than you can imagine. And just to put all the rumors to rest: THEY DO NOT LOSE DOUG. He is safe and sound back at the resort. But, like the first one, they don't remember what happened. Also like the first one, it ends up all making sense.

But before it ties up, the guys get put through some pretty unbelievable shit. The highlights for me: 1. A drug dealing monkey who smokes cigarettes. 2. Mr. Chow is back and better than ever. 3. A car chase through Bangkok. 4. Stew and his dark side are revealed through a beautiful girl they met the night before. 5. Alan's fucked up flashback. I'm being vague on purpose, you will thank me later.

The crowd I saw it with were going crazy. I kept looking over at Todd Phillips who was by himself sitting on the floor in the aisle. He was watching the audience and never really looked up at the screen. He must have been pretty happy with how it played. It was definitely an early cut, there were some slow parts and some things that seemed "unfinished" but overall I loved it. On the way out my friend and I were discussing if it was actually better than the first one. He thought it was. I thought it was close but probably the first one. The audience seemed to like this better than the audience I saw the first one with, but maybe that was just because we were the first to see it and we didn't know what movie to expect.

Oh, and one other thing. They have photos at the end. You may want to stick around. EPIC.

The Ghost and The Darkness

I'm surprised to read that Val Kilmer got a razzi nom for his performance in this movie. I thought he was more believable than Michael Douglas.

Pretty intense film, sometimes blunt, but with some nice touches(the stripping away of layers to get to Patterson). The lion hunting scenes are really good and the scenery and soundtrack work well. I think this film has gotten more appreciation with time and initial responses were mucked up by the Hollywood politics of the time.
