Speaking of The People Under the Stairs, I was watching Martyrs last night and certain parts really reminded me of it.  Of course, the story is completely different.  But when you see the fucked up

it's what came to mind.  I thought it was actually a pretty good movie for the torture porn genre.  The last 20-30 minutes was almost too much.  I kinda wanted it to end.  It was 20 minutes of her getting beaten, force fed, beaten, washed, force fed, beaten, etc.  The ending was pretty sweet though.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I dunno... meh.  I'm starting to not like omnicient bad guys (in this case anti-hero?).  Robert Ford in general just came off as an annoying manbaby fanboy and Jesse was schizophrenic.  Maybe that was the point but its hard to like anyone in this film.  I also got a little lost as to what exactly was motivating everyone to shoot each other in the head and whatnot.

Its not terrible like sceneman says, but it was definitely overrated in the internet dens. While I was watching it I kept thinking of that one line in Adaptation that says literal narration of a character's thoughts is lazy and terrible writing. Kaufman was soooo right.

for me Van Helsing was when I realised: All Hollywood action flicks are these days are bloated cgi filled wrecks where you can't figure out what the fuck is even happening.

I didn't even watch the whole thing. Maybe about 30 minutes or so. It was just so horrible. Just a bunch of things being flung at the screen one after another in attempt to somehow make it all entertaining, but utterly failing in that. Also the CG was terrible.

I find taojjbtcrb (lol) more entertaining for different reasons. Its enjoyable just to see. As was said, the train scene is fucking gorgeous. It's my background at work. The visual style and narration together remind me of one of those tours from a ghost town in the old west (which i admittedly grew up in so I'm biased i guess). The pacing is relaxing like you're being told a tall tale and you're a little kid again. Then in so many ways, to appeal to my adult senses the movie is simply bad ass. It describes Jesse as that guy that everyone knew at some point that had the charisma and appeal where in the back of their heads every guy wants to be him.

Remember Me

what the fuck? I got home a little while ago, turned on my tv and this was playing so I kept it on in the background.  It seems like it's a white whine movie staring a white person, depressed about relationships and white people stuff, but then there is a scene where
spoiler (click to show/hide)
a little girl sitting in a class room looks a the chalkboard and the only thing written on it is "SEPTEMBER 11, 2001"  Then there is a slow pan out from aforementioned white person to reveal that he's standing in one of the twin towers.  That's followed by like fourteen scenes of grief with a slow black fade between each fooling you into believing the credits will roll, but it keeps going.
[close]
I eventually gave up because my jaw was wide open and I felt the urge to look up and see if this was the purpose of the movie.  I remember seeing a trailer before that didn't even hint at any of this.  It came out of nowhere.

To date, the only Kubrick film I've found enjoyment in was Full Metal Jacket.

I just watched this movie called Hunter Prey and what a weird ass movie it is. it's super low budget but is really nice to look at thanks to the fact that it's shot with the RED camera. it's about a group of space commandos who crash land on a desert planet and have to recapture an escaped prisoner. it's a really big nerd movie fyi. i'm almost willing to say it feels like a sci-fi original movie but with some decent production values and better directed. i dunno if i dug it or not. just really weird.

more thoughts. i really enjoyed that it didnt try to be an adrenaline fueled action flick. its slow paced with a lot of wide angled shots. exposition sprinkled here and there build the universe the movie takes place in (which is what makes it so weird and nerdy). i appreciated it's commitment to the concept as well.

I watched Tron legacy a couple of weeks ago, enjoyable in an aesthetic sense and the music was good but it felt kinda middling otherwise.
I also had to buy my mate a case of beer because we bet on whether Oliva Wilde and the douchy protagonist would do the deed (in the sense you can show that in a disney film). :'(

Saw Mulan last night. I've always wanted to like it; tomboy protagonist, raw-ass looking antagonist, cool setting, etc. but it's kinda shit... :/

The original was quite entertaining though. I can't really remember Scream 2 to be honest.

Clockwork Orange is typical Kubrick batshit insane dystopia stuff, it gets notorious in the first place for the genital sculptures and rape scenes and whatnot.  The hype lies within the shock value.  I don't think I enjoyed it either, didnt enjoy Space Odyssey too.  The Shining?  Thats some good shit though.

You guys are so ignorant and blind it's hilarious.

You do realise that by labeling nay-sayers of that film as "no-taste plebs" you are actually enforcing the type of conformity that CO is trying to portray negatively. You really have no idea. You only claim to like the film because you fear that you too will be called a pleb of you don't praise it; it's a vicious cycle.

I'll happily sit back, and make my own well informed decisions of which entertainment I use and enjoy, thank you very much. I dont need to be a fucking sheep and just like every big "art" film. It's amazing seeing these societal pressures have such impact on young people. Pretty saddening too.

I'll bet you guys think Fight Club is pure unbridled genius too?

FMJ is Kubrick's worst film.  The Shining or Eyes Wide Shut is his best. A Clockwork Orange is squarely in the middle.  I don't think it's as great as some people, but it's very entertaining and unique and that alone is enough to put it above most movies IMO.

Insidious
Man!!  This was some good shit.  First time I'd really been creeped out in a long time.  Everything from the pacing, screeching string instruments and bold red title screen just screams throwback.  If you liked poltergeist, you'll like this.  It's the first time in a long time that new horror movie has left an impression.  It should be seen in theater too.  It's not a group thing like Paranormal Activity so don't worry, it'll still be great at home.  But it benefits from a great surround sound and huge screen.  The line that creeped me out the most was...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kid: Mommy? Can I change rooms?
Mom: Why? What's wrong?
Kid: Dalton (kid who's in a coma) scares me.
Mom: What? Why?
Kid: I don't like when he walks around at night
[close]
THEN SCREECHING STRING INSTRUMENTS!

It takes a lot of cues from Poltergeist though including a pretty famous scene
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The one where the psychic is describing the other world to the family and why the daughter has been taken.  It's another psychic lady who's not short or fat, but she is still pretty creepy when she does it. They describe the world similarly but with enough variation to not be a complete ripoff.
[close]

The only thing that kinda made me go "ehhhh" was the fact that they actually
spoiler (click to show/hide)
showed the other world.  I feel like it kinda ruins the mystery surrounding it that made poltergeist so scary.
[close]
That's the only part that felt too new hollywood to me.  Like they just had to! I guess audiences won't stand for that type of shit anymore in a horror movie.  But they didn't go too far with it and it was pretty well done and didn't mess up the rest of the movie at all.

This is definitely a horror movie that deserves your money.  I'll get Scream 4 from Netflix or something probably.

:bow first DVD i ever bought :bow2

There's an excellent making-of documentary on the disc where they go in-depth on the effects, apparently Rob Bottin was sick with pneumonia a lot of the time and nearly killed himself working on it (but it led to a lot of cool/gory fever dream effects!)

I think Kubrick gets a shitload of credit for Clockwork where most of it should be directed at Anthony Burgess. I once had someone tell me Kubrick was a genius because he invented a language for the movie.

smh

Burgess deserves more credit that he receives, certainly, but Kubrick's visual realization of Burgess's dystopic nightmare is ultimately what sticks with you the most.  That can be said for nearly all of Kubrick's adaptations.

La Haine - examination of low class / immigrant relations in modern day (90's) France via three 20-somethings who squabble with anyone and anything at the drop of a hat ("fuck you!"  "no, FUCK you!"  "NO, FUCK YOUR MOTHER!" exchanges make up a substantial portion of the dialogue) trying to entertain themselves while avoiding the police (unsuccessfully) in the aftermath of a riot in which one of their good friends was beat into a coma and all are on edge, police and citizens alike.  One of Vincent Cassel's first roles.

Was pretty great; not all that much unlike A Clockwork Orange, really, except its characters retain their morals in spite of the madness where Alex isn't much more than a raving lunatic.

Watched Megamind and Battle: Los Angeles yesterday.  Neither of them were bad at all.  They weren't the greatest movies I've ever seen, but not bad!

I mean, those movies were fucking TERRIBLE!
