But I have a question about the story:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
When the actress does the seance she says there's 3 spirits in the house.  That something terrible happened and to not open the basement.  That they want to live.  Is there ever an explanation for this?  In the end when the ghosts appear it seems like the story goes like the tale, that the bride killed herself and still haunts the basement and now her groom kills himself and joins her as a ghost.  This doesn't explain the 3 spirits at all, so I'm confused about that part.  Did the medium make that story up to try to warn the girl not to go in the basement because she saw that she would die down there?
[close]

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The actress's psychic ability let her see the future. She saw the ghost of the bride, the ghost of the old man, and the ghost of the girl. She knew the girl was going to do die, but didn't say anything because she knew it wouldn't matter.

High five Mr P. Have you seen Lake Mungo?

no.  I avoided it because I read the title and can only think of Mongo from Blazing Saddles.

Hellraiser: Revelations is easily the worst of the series. The guy they got for Pinhead both didn't look good in the make-up and didn't even know how to act the part.

kill list is absolutely amazing.

The Kill List was great! The last moments of the film were especially tense. It was like a heightened Wicker Man (original).

Ended up watching the Criterion of Dillinger is Dead last night which I haven't seen before. What a very strange, quiet movie. Great ending too.

Even the worst of the sequels where still somewhat bearable because Doug Bradley was so awesome, but watching a Hellraiser movie this dire without even the benefit of Doug Bradley is a torment worthy of Pinhead himself. :(

Haha, and oh man, the ending was so bad. I mean yeah everything was bad, but DAT ENDING. Yikes. They basically ripped off the Hellraiser 1 for most of the plot, the least they could have done was rip of Hellraiser 1's ending too. Instead it's just like "Pinhead shows up and kills a few people, then gets bored and leaves, the end." :lol

Is it worse than HELLRAISER IN SPACE?  Because if so I want to watch this movie.

Hellraiser: Bloodlines wasn't all that bad considering the development hell Kevin Yagher went through with Dimension over the final cut. But yes, Revelations is far worse than what was the worst of the series, Hellworld.

1 and 2 are both great. 3 is super cheesy but a lot of fun if you go into it expecting a film very different in style from the first two. 4 has a lot of interesting ideas, some really good moments along with some pretty bad ones. 5 was originally a different movie with Hellraiser slapped on it. It's a decent movie, but not Hellraiser.

The first one is just a solid horror movie, the second one is cool because it delves into the mythology more, in the third one they just go buck wild and basically throw everything out the window but it's still kinda fun in an over the top kind of way, the fourth one they went back to the mythology but they also went to LOL SPACE so yeah there's that (still scared the piss out of me as a teenager :lol ). After that the series went DTV, the fifth one I didn't really like at the time but in retrospect it seems better after seeing all the other DTV sequels, the 6th one I got sucked into thinking it might be good because it had the chick from the first two movies (nope, it was bad). Anything after 6 shouldn't even be brought up in polite company.

Basically I would say 1 & 2 are the only ones that are "good", after that proceed at your own risk.

Catching up on an earlier film of Christopher Smith, the guy who did Triangle.  Basically a cabin in the woods tale where instead of stupid teens you get the cast of VEEP on a team building vacation in the woods.  There's some good funny and the movie is kind of ridiculously awesome at moments.  It feels very amateur and the tone of the film is all over the place.  It feels like he's trying to do a Planet Terror type parody, but sometimes it falls in to what it's trying to parody.  The horror bits are all kind of bad and cheezy.  The last 20% of the movie though:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
when it drops its pretense of being a horror movie and becomes a ridiculous film about idiotic terrorists vs. idiotic employees, it's pretty  :lol in a good way.
[close]
Nowhere near as good as Triangle (which I'm not even that big of a fan of, but at least it's an interesting film), but kind of a fun 90 mins if you're bored and browsing through netflix streaming.

Now I just gotta see his Black Death.

I'm watching In Time.

Amanda Seyfried is beautiful in the same way that some insects are beautiful. Justin Timberlake proves that he can't do EVERYTHING, by failing to act in this movie. I know he can act, I've seen Alpha Dog. He just doesn't do it in this movie. Shit, Cylian Murphy is barely able to navigate this stuff.

It's a fun movie in the same way Equilibrium was: it's not very good, but it's fun to watch them try.

I was blown away with how low-budget and cheesy Black Death was, it honestly felt like a badly funded BBC film. Shit it has Percy (from Blackadder on steroids, and a hilariously cliched bunch of ne'er do wells, including a dual wielder). The acting is abysmal, especially the bit in the beginning with the young friar and maiden fair, talk about not only destroying the SOD, but taking a giant shit on its smouldering remains.

More profound thoughts about The Devil Inside:

for a better take on Black Death, check out Sauna, a Finnish film.

Last night we went to see Chicken With Plums, the new film by Marjane Satrapi (better known as the Graphic Novelist who wrote Persepolis about her growing up during the Islamic Revolution in Iran).  Fucking.  Incredible.  Absolutely hilarious, absolutely touching.  Squeezes every last drop out of their tiny budget to produce one of the more affecting films I've seen this year.

Word of warning, there is a quotient of whimsy, so if you despise Michel Gondry films, you will probably loathe this.

Man, if Black Death is a good step down from Severance which is already a good step down from Triangle... :|  Maybe I should just avoid it.  Does it even have any kind of weird, creative, and interesting plot stuff like Triangle?  Or is it just a traditional by the books movie?

I thought Christopher Smith might have had potential to be the next Neil Marshall kind of newcomer to fun creative horror films, but now I'm starting to think he's just an ok director/writer who had a good short story to tell with Triangle.

Hellraiser 2 looks amazing still. It's basically what the first should have been, but wasn't. Thanks to Clives directorial vision, there's a reason why writers should never direct their own stuff.

Jump Street has Ice 'Bendick Arnold' Cube playing the kind of character his street youthhood would have baked for a dime. It's really funny so far!

Hellraiser I was a lot more straightforward and small-scale, though still pretty good. Hellraiser II digs deeper into the mythology and presents a broader scale for the events of the movie [particularly the later half].

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

This blog sums up my feelings on the film:

http://horrordigest.blogspot.com/2011/01/hellbound-hellraiser-ii-help-me.html

Even after reading the plot explanations (which mainly come from the comics, original script, and other films), a lot of the plot is all kinds of stupid and badly written.  I think trying to connect it so heavily  to the first film was a big mistake instead of just being about a different person with a different box and giving more background on hell and the cenobites.  The cenobites were way cooler when you didn't know their backstory; they seemed more mythical, but now it's just some soldier guy.  Pinhead had like 5 mins in the movie and cenobites getting wasted by dickfingers was really lame.

I agree that the movie is worth watching for the imagery.  It has a lot of cool Jacob's Ladder/Silent Hill-esque macabre sets and the gore is creatively disturbing.

But I thought the actual "movie" and story being told pretty much sucked.  Hellraiser 1 was much better because it was just a cool little macabre tale.  I feel that with the explanations and stuff in II, Hellraiser universe became a lot less interesting and I'm probably done with the series.  A big floating obelisk rules hell which is a boring maze and makes cenobites to go kill people and bring souls.  Not really sure how you can keep that running for another 6 or 7 films.

And dickfingers was a terrrrrible villain.  So lame compared to Pinhead and good horror monsters.

You might have the chance to see Jet Li kick some ass, in Three Dimensions
Quote from: www.deadline.com
MAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX), in partnership with Indomina Releasing (Indomina), today announced the release of Bona Film Group’s (NASDAQ: BONA) blockbuster Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, starring Jet Li, for an exclusive, limited engagement across North America in September in the immersive IMAX® 3D format.

Acquired for North American release by Indomina, the motion picture distribution arm of The Indomina Group, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate is the first Chinese-language film to be released in the IMAX® 3D format and the fourth-highest grossing Chinese-language film of all time.

“We’re delighted to be working again with Bona and Tsui Hark and to release their newest film, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate,” said Indomina Group Vice Chairman and CEO, Jasbinder Singh Mann. “It’s an ideal fit for Indomina – just as IMAX is the ideal movie-going experience for the film. Audiences are in for a real treat when they see this Chinese martial arts masterpiece on the IMAX screen.”

which means this will play in limited release across America in about five months, I'm psyched.

Watched Bad Dreams (1988) last night for the first time. It's always nice to find a somewhat decent 80s horror film that I haven't seen yet. It plays out like a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3 without the Dream Warriors. That was probably intentional too since it stars the punk chick from NoES3 and was originally supposed to be directed by Chuck Russell who also did NoES3. The film basically involves a girl in a psychiatric hospital having "bad dreams" of a burnt up cult leader who apparently pushes other people in her group into committing suicide. Sound familiar? As blatant of a copy as this is the film is quite watchable and seems to have a fairly decent budget for the time.

but I feel like it would have been way better if it wasn't a "found footage" movie

That's basically where I am right now with this genre.

I'm so glad they're actually making a movie like Spring Breakers.  I think it is great that they've made this movie for the purposes of male masturbation.

If it is possible, after reading the book and seeing that preview, I'm now even less interested in the movie than I was before. Abe's Wing-Chun Drunken Axe isn't how it's portrayed in the book. Wow.

The guy directing this flick is the same guy who wrote Kids and directed Gummo and Trash Humpers.  It must be safe to assume that the abundant half-naked teens are just to lure you down some incredibly freaky, deranged rabbit hole.

What the fucking fuck?
Harmony Korine got a studio directing gig?  Cheesus Christ!  Didn't they know who he was?

was 1970's John Waters/90's Takashi Miike not available to make mainstream pap?
