Watched Bad Dreams (1988) last night for the first time. It's always nice to find a somewhat decent 80s horror film that I haven't seen yet. It plays out like a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3 without the Dream Warriors. That was probably intentional too since it stars the punk chick from NoES3 and was originally supposed to be directed by Chuck Russell who also did NoES3. The film basically involves a girl in a psychiatric hospital having "bad dreams" of a burnt up cult leader who apparently pushes other people in her group into committing suicide. Sound familiar? As blatant of a copy as this is the film is quite watchable and seems to have a fairly decent budget for the time.

I dated a stunt woman from that movie.

That's all I got.

Finally watched Ginger Snaps. I loved it until the last 20 minutes, which dragged on endlessly. The relationship between the two sisters was well realized, the dialog was a lot of fun.

How are the sequels?

I liked the second one just as much as the first one, but it does have a different tone than the first film. I enjoyed the third one as well but it's definitely the weakest of the three.

New film, Killer Joe, from William Friedkin (Exorcist, French Connection, Bug). It's NC-17 but the trailer is SFW.

I back up what ENL says, but I also enjoyed the third movie and was kind of impressed at the chance the filmmakers took.

The 10th Victim.

The Hunger Games / Battle Royal as swinging psychedelic 60s Italian film.  Basically amazing.

Haywire is fucking badass, dear god.  Soderbergh gets it: that is exactly how you direct an action scene; and as a result, Haywire has some of the best hand-to-hand sequences in an American film, ever.

That's not completely true.  It doesn't have big, lengthy, bombastic action set-pieces, certainly, but there is plenty of action.  Or rather, the film is paced effectively to where there isn't a significant chunk of time that seemed it would've been better served with a car chase jammed between.  And there are no car chases.

Oops, I lied, there is a very short car chase.

It's not Mission: Impossible, where nearly every scene is packed with action, but everything is handled so well that the down-time between the short, brutal action scenes doesn't drag the whole thing down.

I made the mistake of seeing Red State.  Avoid, avoid, avoid.  Kevin Smith, after being in the game for 20 years, still doesn't know how to write realistic dialogue.  He's like a sped version of Quentin Tarantino.  While this was mildly tolerable in the View Askewniverse, it flounders outside of that world.  If John Goodman wasn't in the movie, it would be a total write off.

In related news, Giallo was just added to Netflix streaming, I added it to my queue, my expectations are low.

Giallo is depressingly terrible.  Its not even funny-bad like Mother of Tears.  Its just an inept slog that wastes the time and money of all involved.

Any hope of old Argento coming back is dead to me after Mother of Tears. His style has gotten progressively worse after The Stendhal Syndrome. I don't think he's got it in him anymore.

Super

Hadn't heard too much good about it (people would just say it was dark and messed up version of Kick Ass [errr, Kick Ass was pretty dark already!]), maybe I'm just kind of fucked up but I thought the first hour of the movie was pretty darn funny in a dark humor way.  Ellen Page was AWESOME.  The scene where:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
She runs the car into the bad guy and destroys his legs and gets out and starts taunting and laughing at him like "OH MAN, YOU JUST GOT FUCKED UP.  HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES BITCH!" I was rolling on the floor.  Her craziness + cussing was the highlight of the comedy and the main guy was a good straight man.  The hilarity of some of his stuff like when he smashes the guy who cut in the line at the movies was  :lol
[close]

The last 30 mins were entertaining and fit with the narrative flow and tone of the film.  In the end it wasn't a great film, but it was a good one.  What actually propped it up from just an alright film to a good film worth seeing and recommending was the punk soundtrack.  It was so good!  Lots of great great punk tracks and it fit the scenes so well.  I love punk music so that boosted the film up and made it a very entertaining 90 mins.  Kevin Bacon is great too like he is in X-men FC; I like this old crazy bastard Kevin Bacon.  The direction was pretty tight for the film too, and the opening credit animation was nicely done.  Would recommend.

A Dangerous Method

100% character acting film.  Fassbender & Mortison chew the scenes as Jung and Freud.  Keira Knightley is surprisingly good, considering I'd only seen her once or twice before in tween stuff.  I think she overacts the role a bit, but she does a good job.  Jung's wife is so weirdly acted in the film too, can't tell if she's good or bad.  Movie-wise...Eastern Promises this is not.  The plot is very thin and time skips between every scene.  It's the story of the people and their interactions and changes, but at the end of the day it feels a little short-changed and there isn't much there.  But the cinematography is gorgeous and Howard Shore's music is great as always.  So you get to sit back, watch some good acting and look at a pretty picture.  Could do a lot worse for 90 mins.  So I'd still recommend it.  I think this would have worked better as a stage play tbh since it's mainly about two people standing in a room giving good performances.

Tim Timebomb's Rock n Roll Theater Part 1

Twilight Zone-ish musical by Rancid's Tim Armstrong and Lars Fredrickson.  Story is eh, mainly just an extended music video for new Rancid spinoff album with girls shaking booty and guys dancing around.

Mainly just checked it out because it comes with a 14 song album (http://rocknrolltheater.tv/).  Music is good, but kind of simple in lyrics.

The Last Mountain - I admit that Justified piqued my interest in seeing this movie.  A bunch of West Virginians get pissed at strip mining with footage of angry protests from the locals.  The facts are pretty damning but I suspect most of the violent protestors will vote Republican this fall because Obama is a secret muslin.  Some of the footage of the protests is shocking and I'm surprised that these didn't get shown on TV...oh wait, no I'm not.  As a nicca working in the energy industry, coal plants should be decommissioned and soon.  While wind and solar isn't 100%, if you combine that with combined cycle natural gas plants, you can get a smart grid up and running without problems.  It's going to be painfully expensive and unless people want to pay a double digit increase in rates, the government is going to have to subsidize this operation.

Go and see it.

Immortal: Thought it was going to be a horrid knockoff of 300. I didn't know Tarsem was doing it. Gorgeous movie. I enjoyed it, though narratively it is at once overly obvious and muddled toward the end. Mickey Rourke managed to be great without stealing every scene. But what the hell was John Hurt doing in this movie?

Dark Shadows is going to be a huge bomb, but that's only because it cost 150 Million US dollars.

But yeah, its getting slaughtered by The Avengers, its actually doing kinda okay for an adaptation of a hyper-obscure gothic nerdy IP with no selling points besides "Hey, Johnny Depp's in this".

Mongkok is still the best film of his I've yet seen though.  Love the trigger happy cop drama mini-arc in this film.

Yes, I hadn't seen it until tonight. But I gotta say it was...eh dunno. I thought it was rather poorly written, especially the voice over dialogue. Nearly every character felt like a cliche or one dimensional, from the black nationalist to the crazy best friend. Boyz N The Hood is a far better film, despite the cheesy music.
