from the director of City of Violence and Crying Fist, should have some excellent action in it.

and Holy SHIT!  Phantasm 5 just finished production?!

it appears to be appropriately low budget.  I can't believe this exists.  The most batshit horror franchise returns.

holy shit, Reggie Bannister is almost 70!?

how did that Faustian bargain go?
"You won't be the most handsome guy, but you'll spend your whole adult life looking like a dude in his 50's.

also, for the uninitiated, Phantasm 2-4 (and presumably part 5) take place on a strict, consecutive chronology.  Where each film in the series always ends on a cliffhanger and the sequel picks up a moment later.

those films came out in 1988, 94, and 98.
and yes, you're damn right I'm looking forward to this.

I'll watch anything the guy from Bubba Ho Tep does, so count me in!

Anyone going to see Captain this weekend? Heard that it's in some IMAX theaters, but none of mine have updated their showtimes.

Really gripping thriller with fantastic performances and cinematography.  But also pretty dark and dirty feeling.  Feeling pretty unsettled after watching that.

And keeping his trophy wife promoted also likely dipped into that. And the FAKK thing I suspect lost him some money. I wish I could hate on him, but he made a crap comic which happened to hit it big, and used the profits to pursue his interests and to regularly sex up a fetish model. Seems like the American dream.

Saw a doc the other night, Fame High. Follows five kids in their last year at the LA High School of Arts. Pretty interesting stuff. I also liked how they allowed enough time to elapse when they released the film, so you could see how these kids lives turned out when they made the transition out of high school.

Finally saw Gravity. I loved the first 30-40 minutes, but then it just became too much. Once your credulity breaks, it's hard to be affected by the tension they are attempting to create. Her shooting through space with a Co2 canister was my 'Indiana Jones in a refrigerator' moment.

Obvious Child is a Jenny Slate vehicle (and it's as weird to type as it is to read)  It's a romantic comedy that isn't selling the general romantic comedy stability fantasies.  I laughed out loud several times.  The film goes dark as hell and skirts into dramatic territory without veering into melodrama.

Veronica Mars movie was just okay.  Great seeing Kristen Bell back to her comfortable self in the role.  Colantoni slips very easily back into the father figure role.  Wallace Mac and Weevil are always a pleasure as well, especially Weevil in this movie.

But what a ham-fisted mystery, and in my opinion a poor excuse just to get Veronica back to Neptune.  It's familiar, its not engaging or shocking whatsoever, and it involves the usual tropes that dragged down the third season.  Also, Dohring is at his absolute worst in the movie.  He's never been able to top his own performance since his season 2 arc.

The ending is too predictable and honestly very disappointing.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Having her give up everything she worked a decade for to escape Neptune was just ridiculous.  I would have been happy if they went this route and ended the film on a note of helplessness from Veronica, admitting her addiction to case solving and class warfare to be a disease.  Instead, she admits her addiction in the calmest and most hopeful way possible. Just seemed uncharacteristic.
[close]

Regardless -- fun dialogue, and the movie settles back into the show's familiar snark and tendencies almost immediately.  Just could have been much better.  But maybe this is a perfect case study about the Kickstarter model?  Who know.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Yup.  Another good Wes Anderson movie.  Gorgeous framing, awesome minatures, great comic moments with some actual touching moments (although a lot goofier and less touching/personal than Moonrise Kingdom), and more importantly lots of Jeff Goldblum.  Ralph Fiennes is insanely good here too.

So glad Life Aquatic is finally coming out in HD in May.  Haven't seen it in forever and can't wait to watch it again and see how it holds up to the last few more recent Anderson films.  I think, without having re-watched most of them in a long time, my Wes Anderson ranking is:

Moonrise Kingdom > Life Aquatic > Rushmore > The Grand Budapest Hotel > The Royal Tennabaums > The Darjeeling Limited > Fantastic Mr. Fox >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bottle Rocket because it kind of sucks

I'll be the douchebag who didn't like it all that much. It has some cool ideas. The most incredibly repetitive soundtrack of all time as well. I think they use the main theme at least 200 times in the film.

Was it just the soundtrack, or was it otherwise just not what you'd expected?

Alex Proya's next masterpiece "Gods of Egypt" cast it's first black actor.

Quote
Chadwick Boseman has booked a role in Alex Proyas’ period epic “Gods Of Egypt,” which Summit Entertainment will release on Feb. 12, 2016.

The “42″ star, has signed up to play Thoth, the god of wisdom, moon and other things. He was the inventor of writing who announced and wrote down the judgments of the dead. Thoth is often depicted as a man with the head of an ibis, or a baboon.
