Man, whatever happened to Gregory Hoblit? He had three pretty good films in a row (Primal Fear, Fallen, Frequency) and then a bunch of shit (Hart's War, Fracture, Untraceable). I think Fallen is in my list of underrated thrillers too.

All you meatbags talking about getting your cock sucked by cat people in Jimmy Cameron's 3D Jungle Safari should go see The Hurt Locker instead. Anyone that says Cameron should win any serious award over The Hurt Locker should be raped in the anoos by an IED.

Trainspotting

This is so brilliant, I've waited way too long to see it.  It reminds me of a style of film-making that is popular in Australian movies - sort of fly-on-the-wall approach where the characters and their everyday lives are the focal point rather than any particularly grand story.

ahhhh, now I get it.  I've only seen the movie like 6000 times too.  :lol   People who quote that movie too much kinda turned me off from watching it for a while, but I watched it for the first time in years today and remembered how complex it is.

Princess and the Frog

Good.  The setting was awesome and provided a rich feel for the world of the characters.  The journey of the characters was far too short to take full advantage of it though, but still nice.  Voodoo is always kickass.  Music was ok, only a couple of songs seemed good, no classics.  Animation/art was nice.  2d >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> cg.  Thought it was pretty humorous.  Not up there with the Disney classics, but a good movie.

Shame it bombed.  Really would've loved a 2d revival at Disney  :'(

It's still pulling decent daily numbers, although it won't get anywhere near Pixar and Disney's best unfortunately. Still, Disney has got a few more 2D films in the works that are still supposed to be going forward, so all is not lost.

Watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for the first time in years.  It's not so good.  I mean, it's not Crystal Skull bad, but comparing it to Raiders, Temple of Doom is lame and uninteresting.  I rewatched Raiders not to long ago and thought it was still awesome.

watched The Perfect Getaway.  beautiful tropical island imagery.   good story but the "twist" is purposefully telegraphed way in advance.  i think it's worth the time in the watching though as it's pretty well done all around.

saw Invictus and Sherlock Holmes

Invictus was good, somewhat oscar bait sort of film. It's a sports film with some political history, but you don't need to know anything about rugby or Nelson Mandela to enjoy it. An old couple behind me commented on how much Morgan Freeman really looks like Nelson Mandela. Not squinty enough imo.

Sherlock Holmes I rather did like, does Sherlock well and Jude is great as Watson. Obviously trying to set up the film as a series, because Moriarty is a bigger villian tease than Blackwood. I had no issues with the pacing, felt it was quickly paced throughout.

Morgan Freeman did a really good job with that accent though.  The movie overall was definitely oscar-bait but I didn't feel that it had enough depth for a political drama and not optimistic enough as a sports film.

The plane scene was fucking awesome though.

Angels and Demons

It's a decent thriller, but about 45 minutes too long. It just goes on and one forever with Tom Hanks and that woman running from one side of Rome to the other. Plus, the "twist ending" was broadcast at least a mile away.

To Live and Die In LA

If I had to explain the 80s to someone I'd just buy this movie for them. What other decade would feature a montage scene - complete with rockin' music - of someone making counterfeit money. William Peterson plays a doucebag secret service agent hot on the trail of the cold blooded counterfeiter (played by a pretty awesome Dafoe) who killed his partner. This movie is full of awesome lines ("if you want bread, fuck a baker") and most be seen, from the ridiculous opening action scene to the shocking end.

I give this three shotgun blasts to the face out of four shotgun blasts to the face

I watched a Mitch Hedberg DVD.  forget what it's called.  For some reason, I was expecting a more extroverted, crazy guy :lol   It took a bit for me to get into it, but in the end I was lolling pretty hard.

So I liked Zack Galfinianakis and Mitch Hedberg...I'm digging the super awkward comedians, who should I check out next?

By going from "not very good" to "very good" with time?  It's a gorgeous film but the narrative is really lacking.  I found it hard to stay awake.

The basic, obvious narrative of what happens to Max doesn't follow the expected norms, it doesn't have rise/fall sort of placing, but instead follows real life narrative which doesn't have those convenient trappings, or the narrative of how kids tell a story as random sequences of events. This is something I actually really like about the film.  As a writer, I'm really bored of the normal, expected and tired ideas of a story. Sometimes events are just phases and they meet their end once they find that end. Even though there is not a classic quest narrative or anything like that, when you see the mother smile at the end and fall asleep, you, or maybe I should say I feel completion.

There are other, more interesting narratives, the kind that normally exist in good stories, the ones beyond the basic plot. The visual narrative of the egg/womb shapes in the story  is one I've been thinking about. The first egg is the igloo, and it coincides with a distant sister who doesn't listen to him, and then 'rumpus' with her friends who don't understand the secret rules of the igloo and jump on it to smash it. In Max's mind, the igloo is a fortress and you shouldn't just crush it. He feels clever in having thrown the snow balls and then retreated to his hideout, but in the teen world it's just snow to be crushed. The next egg is the monster pile, and here too, Max feels endagered because these monsters are landing one after another on top of him, with a mix of the child-like play Max enjoys and the big, adult danger of the igloo smashing. At the bottom of the egg he finds K.W., who gives the elder female/motherly comfort to restore this egg as safe. The next egg, which I didn't think about the first time through, is Carol's model of his ideal world, where Max pokes his head up through the hole to see the city. Max is peering through another person's egg here, another's dream/fantasy and he is buying into it and creates the fortress from it, which becomes the ultimate egg/womb.  But of course that womb is partly Carol's idea and becomes a shared egg and there's lots of issues with combining different fantasies and imaginations, just as there is in childlike play where the 'king' or creator of the play wants to continue his/her fantasy, but runs into trouble when others want to put in their imagination.  Does it mesh? Yes and no, and conflict and emotions result.

There is also the play narrative, how Max deals with troubles and emotions through play. I won't go all the way through that one, but it links into the egg narrative obviously, and it is here that Max has to learn how to deal with people and emotions through ways other than play. And once he does, he is no longer King of the Wild Things, no longer a wild thing/monster himself, and like the vampire who lost his teeth, he leaves the others of his kind for no longer being believed as one of them. Max goes from the physical play world of dealing with emotions to the verbal/expressive world of dealing with emotions. Or the boy way of dealing with emotions to the girl way of dealing with emotions.

So, anyways, I find a lot there to be had in the movie. Plenty to rethink about.

I'm the same way with Zodiac.  I'm almost embarrassed with how many times I've watched it.  And if you haven't seen it, the director's cut disc is pretty awesome because of the feature length documentary about the Zodiac killings featuring almost all the main people invovled in the case.  Definitely worth watching.

There was potential for a good cheezy horror movie in there somewhere, but holy shit was the acting dreadful.  Diablo Cody's script was kinda bad, but the delivery of it is what sank it completely.  Lesbian makeout scene was hot though  ;)

Paranormal Activity .... i really don't understand how someone can be scared watching this movie, knowing that it is a movie...man this movie sucks.

Lovely Bones. Sometimes it had me on the edge of my seat, but it's simply not put together well. Movie doesn't feel right as a whole, and the ending sucks major ass.

Gamer. Gerard Butler is awesome, and there are some nice ideas here, but it only works in the same level an heavy metal music video works.

I felt this way too. The thriller stuff was enjoyable enough but the movie switched between those and the CGI filled limbo scenes too often. It made for some awkward transitions and a pretty mediocre film overall.
