The Royal Tenebaums

I watched this just so I could troll Wes Anderson more effectively. I expected it to suck. I was not disappointed.

Yeah, I'm never going to watch any of his movies again.

So fucking awesome. And yet it's only Cameron's fourth or fifth best film. The guy does action better than just about anyone. Out of the western directors, I'd say only Paul Verhoeven and Peter Jackson come close.

Are you fucking kidding me?

I watched Be Cool tonight. It was fun, but it was just as phoned-in as the novel. A least it starts by acknowledging that they didn't even want to do a sequel. The singer in it was super cute though.

No, but I wouldn't put either as "top action directors". I was bolding both because they're ridiculous choices.

Verhoeven is a great exploitation director, Jackson is a great genre director. I can name three or four directors that come immediately to mind that I'd rate above them (and yes, McTiernan is one and should never, ever be an afterthought). This is typical film geek shit, though - overrating primarily genre directors because it tickles their nerdy fancy. I mean, might as well throw Sam Raimi up there if you're going to say shit like that.

I love Peter Jackson, but I definitely wouldn't say the man has range.  He's very good with, uh, specific things.

That said, I'm curious to see how Lovely Bones turns out.

He's a good genre director.

But to list him over the likes of Frankenheimer, McTiernan, Donner, Peckinpah, Besson, etc. is pretty crazy. I'd probably rate The Wachowski Bros. and the collective filmography of the Scott brothers over Jackson, if we're talking about just action.

Too bad he's hanging around with Spielberg. So much of his time is gonna go to the Hobbit and this Tintin thing.

In my perfect world I'd love to see him get involved with HBO's Game of Thrones, if it gets picked up. Even just directing one episode to give it more hype

Mr & Mrs Smith

I have really never seen a movie with Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie in it.  I am no expert on acting but I now have major newfound respect for the awesome abilities of Brad Pitt, and pretty much none for Jolie who seemed utterly average especially when put next to Pitt.

I enjoyed the movie though and the action scenes at the end are kick-ass.

I really can't think of a Besson action sequence not involving Jet Li that I'd rank anywhere near the Helm's Deep or Moria or Minas Tirith battles.

Leon the Professional, Le Femme Nikita and The Fifth Element absolve Luc Besson of all his sins (that stupid Joan of Arc movie, all the Taxi movies he's produced, etc.). Plus, he's pretty much responsible for cultivating most of the kinetic, low-brow action films/directors of the past decade.

Quote
Frankenheimer... I saw Ronin and I think I saw Grand Prix way back in the day, anything else I should watch?

His sequel to The French Connection is better than most original action flicks, The Manchurian Candidate (although more of a thriller), The Train, etc. That's not including his more thriller-oriented stuff like Seconds and 7 Days in May.

Quote
Donner's made some good films, but I don't really think the pure action sequences measure up to the other guys I mentioned, although I should watch the Lethal Weapon series again.

Are you kidding? Between Superman and all the Lethal Weapon films, he gets a pass for life. His second-tier stuff like Conspiracy Theory and Maverick are also better choreographed than most modern directors.

Quote
Haven't watched any Peckinpah films yet, but if you're saying he's a great action director, what films do you recommend?

The Wild Bunch, The Getaway and Cross of Iron.

... I think you have a difficulty separating from what makes a great imaginative director and a great action director. Peter Jackson is great at conjuring up large set pieces, but in the case of Lord of the Rings, that work was already done for him (thanks Tolkien!). Jackson reminds me of Spielberg, actually.

And that's not to say either are bad at directing action, as both have shown they're quite capable, but others have surpassed and exceeded them on a technical level. Their range behind the camera is what makes them so prolific, but when you get to down to a specific element, there are better directors.

Cameron is the only one of the iconic modern day directors that can really say he belongs at the head of the class when it comes to action sequences.

Watched the Pusher 1 and Pusher 2 recently, gonna watch 3 tonight (maybe.)

Imagine the Wire (bolded for attention) style of realism, but it's about Danish drug dealers/criminals and it only follows the one guy per movie.  go watch this shiz...all 3 are on netflix streaming.

Also, it's pretty disappointing to hear the MM has fallen off with his past two movies. Heat and Collateral were so awesome.

If you're watching a British horror film from the 50's-70's, its unlikely that Peter Cushing/Christopher Lee isn't in it.

BTW, seen The Beast Must Die?  I've been meaning to check that out forever.

The best moment in Abrams' Star Trek was when the massive ship emerged from the black hole at the beginning. EVERYTHING went downhill from there.

The AV Club managed to come up with four films from '09 worse than Transformers 2.  :o

Haven't seen any of them, but what I have seen of Paper Heart is insufferable garbage, so I believe that one at the very least.

I put the godfather and scarface right next to each other in my queue withouth realising
-who al pacino is
-that he was in both movies in the starring role.

Guess I'm sheltered.  Anyways, its a pretty stark contrast going from mobster italian to dirty leisure suit cuban.  I mostly found Scarface to be obnoxious.  The thick accents were aggravating and the general portrayal of the eighties makes me glad I was born during the second half of it.

Baby Mama was on TV and, being a fan of Tina Fey, I decided to watch it. It's a pretty straightforward, average comedy, but the writing was decent and Tina Fey and, surprisingly, Amy Poehler were both very funny. Heck, even Steve Martin was pretty good in it, which is something I can't say about most the stuff he does these days.
