American Assassin gets an A for effort and a C for execution. That still averages out to a B picture, of which this very much is, but there are worse things than being a dumber and less self serious version of a Tom Clancy flick. A very bro-ey dude (Dylan O'Brien, miscast but trying hard) who is somehow able to convincingly lose a physical altercation to Micheal Keaton in his 60's (also miscast, but making a full course out of every scene he's in), team up to kill lots of evil turreists, including an also very bro-ey villain mysteriously named 'Ghost' (Taylor Kitsch, perfectly cast). Jason Brourn and his mentor engage in a bunch of generic, lower-tier Statham level shenanigans and plotting, but the focus on clearly depicted stuntwork is appreciated, and the whole exercise is kind of lunkheaded and exploitative but damnit it gets results. A very modest recommendation, unless you're Dick Cheney, in which case you've probably already jerked it to this film nightly since its release (London Has Fallen gets old after a while).
