Here are my opinions on the Bond movies as my mother and I rewatched all of them while I built some Gunpla. All to lead up to going to see No Time to Die tonight, before her surgery tomorrow. Yep, I'm actually this nerdy.

Casino Royale: I was never that big on this movie. I avoided seeing it during its initial release and I'm not sure why. It's certainly a good movie, but disappointing in retrospect, because I don't think the Craig movies really follow through on its promise. It feels like a solid reboot that is the James Bond Begins treatment that will lead us to better understanding the character and play with his legacy. Like I always saw the whole conclusion with Vesper as kind of explaining James' detachment to women. I love how he says the James Bond line and we only hear the Bond theme at the end. It felt like a clever origin story, without the lame stuff Specter and Skyfall would push.

But I think it goes on too long and the whole back end of the movie reminds me of Superman Returns where we spend like 30mins of Supes in a hospital and it feels very un-superman. I believe Craig and Eva Green have great chemistry, but some of those lines.....

QoS: I love this movie. It feels better paced and well shorter than CR which is good. People laugh about Dominc Greene and water, but again I like the whole toned-down affair this series started with. It can get a bit cringy with how "topical" it wants to be("the dollar is not what it use to be"). But I genuinely think it's an exciting movie that works as a continuation of CR. I also really like Bond and Olga K's character. I like how it's not a romantic relationship, but two characters who can really understand each other. Bond feels fully formed at the end, signified by the gun barrel sequence.

Skyfall: This is just a classic bond movie. Traditional down to the very Bond Adelle song that yes I really like. I've seen the joke that Silvia is the Bond people trying to do Ledger Joker and maybe they are right, but he works as a fun villain with a real unique presence. I also have seen the take that M is the Bond girl here and well that works two. Introducing Money Penny and Q was great and continued the reboot feel, but I also think it does well by them. I like how they are characters and not just things that appear before the main mission starts. Maybe it drops the more hard edge of the previous two, but I enjoy it. Not as into visiting Bond estate which I feel goes against the orphan stuff from CR and does nothing for me.

Spectre: I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I hate the title song but upon more rewatches, it's not that terrible. Looks great, just like Skyfall. The whole Bolfield stepbrother is really lame and feels like anime shit. Also makes things feel just a bit smaller. Madison Swan isn't that great of a character and the whole "it was me all along with James" feels unearned.

As for No Time to Die. It was ok.

I didn't hate it and it looks great. Some nice action.

But it for sure has moved back into over-the-topness.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Female 007 felt underutilized. She has presence no doubt, but I never really felt she and Bond had time to shine together. Like what was the point of Anna De Armos being in this movie? Yeah she's super hot and her scenes are fun and cute, but pretty pointless. That whole scene should have been an action scene between the two 007s where you build up their dynamic.

Rami Mallek's not Dr No was just super lame. Appearing randomly mid way through the movie really does nothing for me. His plan is a nebulous "I'm killing plenty of people, but it will lead to some good" which at this point I'm not sure how any person could ever have this logic. He's just not compelling.

Maybe I also just fell into the hype, but the whole "Madalin's secret" thing amounted to "she knew of this guy". Not very exciting. Though I did like them taking her dialogue about why she hates guns from Spectere and connecting it to this movie.

I think for me basicly the movie starts of really good and exciting and then just kind of drags, never really finding the energy ever again.

I enjoy QoS more with each rewatch, but it’s weaker than Casino and Skyfall. SPECTRE makes the misstep of going back to the outrageous stunts of the Brosnan era, and the mythology building of the Star Wars Prequels.

I’m hoping they ease back for NTtK, but it’s unlikely.

I’m worried Lea Seydoux will end up being Bond’s sister or daughter in an OLD BOY scenario.
[close]

Well, her secret was super dumb, in terms of lethality.
Movie was better than SPECTER, but tonally all over the place, and too long by about half an hour. When I saw 6 screenplay credits and 4 story credits, I knew it was going to be a rough ride.

I wanted to see The Last Duel, but it's not showing on imax/isense, just regular screening (which are always horrible, as DUNC proved last time).

Halloween Kills was solid. I just wish everyone wasn't so dumb. And I can see why reviews said it was too dark & mean-spirited. I've seen a lot worse, but was not a happy movie haha. Solid direction and tension. I might've liked it more than 2018, since I didn't think that was great and was just alright.

Bond in Imax was the first time I've gone back to the theater in over a year and half and I'll see Dune in one of the large format screenings next week too but I'm not that enthusiastic about it because of the "style over substance" reviews(even though I quite like Prisoners/Sicario/Arrival/BR2049.)

The Last Duel and the new Wes Anderson and Edgar Wright movies are next but like you said, those will be harder to find a non-mediocre screen for so I might just wait the six weeks until they put them on VOD.

Not sure how good The Last Duel is, but Bond is both a mediocre Bond film and a poor Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation.
We have a few more movies coming out such as The King's Man and Matrix plus I've yet to see Fast 9 and some other films but so far DUNE is my favorite movie this year by quite some distance probably followed by The Dig and the Snyder Cut.

Overall apart from DUNE and the Snyder Cut not a very exciting year for movies. :idont

I ended up seeing Dune twice (it's a long story) once in a normal screen, once in an "iSense" screen, and then Bond in iMAX.
iSense and iMax were comparably good (i like imax a bit more, i don't get what Dolby Atmos is supposed to be about, but they're more or less the same thing), but they're still a worse experience than just a good to great TV at home to me.
Still, i get that going out for a night has its ritualistic pleasure attached to it, i'm not immune to that.

A normal screen though is so subpar at this point, that i'm not sure is even worth that.

They have Last Duel on a normal screen with Original Voice Over though, which is a rarity here, so that may push me over the edge.
I don't want to spend any more for the year, so it's either this or Matrix once that comes out.

Honestly Last Duel looks pretty dark, visually (like DUNC) so it's probably horrible on a low contrast projection. :thinking
And Matrix will probably be imax or at least isense.

Regarding The Batman, it kinda still looks like boring dreck with interesting specks here and there, until they actually show more about what The Riddler is up to I guess. Some of the stuff in the trailer was like a bad Nolan knock-off, which considering how poor the Nolan films were...

I watched Bond on Screen X, the demo sequence before the film was very impressive. 3D without 3D glasses, almost like a VR experience.
After the opening sequence it wasn't used at all in the actual movie. Sometimes the side screens were just turned off at other times it seemed to just fill out some additional background?
I can't quite figure out how it works or is supposed to work. It'll probably look better on my LG OLED anyway.

Today I watched Schindlers List with a friend who hadn't seen it. Which surprised me because this is an essential movie everyone should watch.
Overall an impressive film and beautifully remastered in 4K. It's Liam's movie sure, but Ralph Fiennes plays the ruthless camp commander so well you can hardly tell it is him.
Even his voice is completely different and very few actors can pull that off.

The movie has so many layers it is hard where to begin. The focus is the atrocities of the Holocaust sure but if you're able to move past the shock you can also find a display of entrepeneurship and a lesson about power, networking and connections.
Which is how Schindler managed to save so many people. A lost detail I feel is how Schindler turns all the SS folks around him into unwitting accomplices so they can't report him without risking their own lives.
If you watched it multiple times you can see past the events and discover more about the machinations.

I dig The Batman trailer. Dig the car too. Theme is dope.

Only thing i'm left trying to get over is rebooting again to Year One/Begins territory with slim fit Batman. Would've done anything to get a Batfleck series, which had everything set up to hit the ground running with the the whole Batverse.

Batfleck got done dirty the Snyder cut showed us that much.

New Batman looks great, reminds me of the Nolanverse with a hint of Joker which for me is both a plus.
Also some decent casting choices. I dig the new Catwoman.

I wanna hear the story.
It's not interesting, tl;dr basically the person i went with pre-ordered more by mistake.

That looks very good, has a good sense of mood and personality, feels like Nolan through a grunge, The Crow filter.
I like that Cat Woman much better than Nolan's, too.
I'm also confident Matt Reeves will shoot better action, based on his monkey planet trilogy.

EDIT: Now that i think about it, Batman Begins wasn't too far off, with its completely made up Gotham, it felt kind of raw in parts.
The two sequels got too sleek on that front.

He probably has a part in Nolan's film about Oppenheimer.

Where he explains to Oppenheimer that they're all stuck in a real life simulation created by a Russian scientist on behalf of the KGB in the 1980's to test different outcomes for WW2 so the Soviets win the cold war.
The only way to repair the spacetime continuum is to detonate a nuclear blast on top of the mainframe located at Jornada del Muerto in New Mexico which will reset the world back to the 16th July 1945.

As Oppenheimer walks away from the table, Cain's character says: "Some people play instruments, you must become the destroyer of worlds"

Hard to blame the clickbaiters.

He was on BBC Radio’s movie show on Friday and kept saying he’s more or less retired from acting because his spine is super-fucked and there’s diminishing roles for 90 year olds and he’s pivoted over to writing books instead.

He did say he’d make an exception for Nolan because he doesn’t fuck around and he gets his scenes done in a day or two.

Kinda sucks. I know most people don't care because these are generally small 3 month delays, but was looking forward to Dr. Strange 2 and now it's almost a year away.

Also Ant-Man 3 being the big

Kang

movie, is now...2 years away. Will be really weird if between Loki and Ant-Man 3

There's no more Kang appearances for 2 whole years in the MCU

Watched Dune. I liked it, but the book is one of my favourites, so I'm the target audience, and I'm familiar with the source material. Given how much my wife's eyes glazed over, it might hard to follow and not be that great for the general audience. They kind of screwed up Jessica, though. She is much more of an ice queen in the book, but the audience wouldn't know what she was thinking if none of it made to the surface, I guess. Too bad there isn't going to be a part 2.

Re-watched the original Ghostbusters for the first time in like 20-30 years. Still holds up great. Great script and performances and fun direction. The 2016 restoration of it is pretty impressive, considering the source stock it looks really good, sharp and colorful like 75% of the time.

Wasn't planning on re-watching II since I remember it was bad as a kid, but I think I'll give it a watch and then finally watch the gender-swapped one before I watch Afterlife.

Like that The Batman seems to have its own theme. I miss movie themes.

No, mid way through it switches to theme in trailer 2.

Oh yeah you're right.
I like it, i'm a big fan of that kind of drone shit, so i'm happy it's been a trend this past decade.
