Ok, I guess.  I thought the cinematography was nice but the script was kinda ho-hum.  Would have been better if it was an actual documentary and not a psuedo documentary w/story that's inbetween.  I enjoyed it and the end sequence on the motorcycle rocks but the middle was kinda dull and it never got great.

Shit movie.

I finally got to watch Blue Velvet. Oh man, so fucking perfect. I absolutely love Lynch's penchant for ambiance and droning instead of sweeping music every second. Also...

Frank Booth: What kind of beer do you like to drink, neighbor?
Jeffrey Beaumont: Heineken.
Frank Booth: Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!

:lol

Dennis Hopper was so fucking demented in this movie, what a role.

Terminator 2 special edition.  I've seen the theatrical version so many times, but this is the first time I saw all this other scenes.  Most of them just kinda made Sarah seem more fucked up.  The alternate ending is pretty awful, though.

I recently watched Moon and it was great. I didn't think it was that predictable.....

in fact I thought that the movie was going to be more supernatural or about space dimentia in the beginning. I didn't really think that the other Sam was going to be a clone until some time after they met each other.

I also watched Choke. Pretty good adaptation of the book, and it doesn't take itself seriously at all, which I thought might happen while I was reading the book. Pretty funny

Watched Tokyo Sonata last night, and it definitely lived up to my expectations in terms of quality. The only other Kurosawa film I'd seen was Bright Future (also great), so I wasn't exactly sure what I was going into here as far as style goes. I've already gotten the soundtrack (and the dude's other albums), and I plan on scooping it up on Blu-ray.

Next is Fish Story.

I've been meaning to catch up on Kurosawa myself.  All I've seen so far is Cure, which is pretty damn awesome.  I've got Doppelganger within arms reach for months now and I still haven't gotten around to watching it.

Maybe that's because I spend my free time watching really terrific movies like Pontypool, which asks the question "What would happen if Don Imus were the protagonist in a horror movie?", and follows up with a highly satisfactory answer.  Besides radio dispatches from mysterious elsewheres, the action never leaves the downmarket radio station the recently demoted malcontent finds himself in.  While the displaced shock jock is only too happy to stir the hornets nest of the small town he's in, very weird shit happens and the ongoing story that the station is broadcasting becomes uncomfortingly familiar before too long.

I like short movies.  Movies that know exactly how to say a lot with a little, don't overstay their welcome, present their ideas and don't waste time on dross.  Pontypool does all that, and works in lots of interesting subtext about journalism and commentary.  Its the best thing to come out of Canada since Elisha Cuthbert.

Well...they're kind of hard to classify. KK is big on twisting genres together to do unexpected things. Most of his movies have some kind of take on the horror and/or crime drama genre, but he also blends in lots of dark humor as well. His movies are really surreal too.

I need to see more of Chan-Wook Park's films!  I'd only seen Oldboy before this (which was really entertaining) and Thirst was great too.  It's like Twilight except if it were good and sexy and funny and beautifully shot and featuring some of the most awkward sex scenes ever.  Thumbs up!

Really great movie. Gives me a lot of the same vibes I got off La Haine even though they aren't very similar. It also is real good about showing just how gay arab men look with bleached hair or highlights.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

Honestly, I was disappointed with this compared to Oldboy, Thirst, JSA.

First I'll get the positives out of the way.  The movie was beautifully shot.  While his other films looked great, this, like WKW films, had me looking at the frame as a whole as a piece of art and not just the people or the scenery.  The use of color was really nice too.  And there were a few dark comedy bits that hit the right nights.  The entire family lineup on the bench scene was fantastic.

But the story was so simple and uninteresting yet drawn out for so long.  Oldboy/Thirst/JSA all had great plots that had you on the edge of your seat.  The pacing in those films were great.  Here it's like "hi, I am out for revenge, here is why, ok I'm going to do it easily and in a simple way, endstuff".  I think after his other films I've seen I just expected a lot more from the plotting.  I kept waiting in Lady Vengeance for the plot to take off, for something interesting to happen, which it finally does when

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they bring in the families
[close]

But by then it's basically the end of the movie.  The pacing is just extremely slow like much of asian cinema.  I liked that Oldboy/Thirst/JSA didn't fall into this trapping of a lot of HK/JPN cinema.  But here Park languishes in these gorgeous shots he sets and the camera just sits and sits.  It feels like the film is overly dramatic.  Even as a black comedy, the film felt faaaaaar more serious and overly dramatic than the other three films I've seen.  And like JSA, the horrible engrish really kills the scenes its used in.

tl;dr - Coming from Oldboy/JSA/Thirst, Lady Vengeance was too "normal".  Plain, simple, and slow, it was great to look at but overall disappointing compared to the other 3 films.

I do think the film is the type that would get better on multiple viewings.

Bepbo, you should check out Mr. Vengeance if you haven't seen it. It's my personal favorite of his and, while it's rather slow too, the plot is much more interesting. It's actually slower than Lady too I felt, probably heightened by the fact that there is very little dialog and the shots linger quite a bit.

JSA was really good, but the shitty-ass English always makes me angry when I watch it. urk.  :-X
