Ah, to see the world through the eyes of a child again. :)

You argument is invalidated by the fact that Willco enjoys Blade Runner. Yeah, Munich isn't amazing but it's one of Spielberg's better films.

If growing up means becoming a jaded fuck who can't enjoy anything, then have fun with that. I'll be here with my comics, pop-tarts and porno.

I liked Munich. Had some powerful scenes, like the naked traitor chick getting killed. Tense flick of Jews kicking ass. I thought Inglorious Basterds was great, but it would have  been 10 times better with Munich's cast of badass jews instead of Eli Roth

How is the fact that you're a teenager invalidated by Willco's movie tastes?  He also gave Transformers a B-.

The first Transformers wasn't an enjoyable film? If he gave the second one a B-, I'd be worried.

I'm not saying my being a teenager was invalidated, I'm saying that your argument that my age has anything more than fuck-all to do with my taste in film was invalidated.

I don't really mind a difference of opinion, but saying mine is wrong because I'm so young and wistful is stupid. Come on, man. That trick is older than my grandma.

The first Transformers was trash.  I think it was even worse than the second one.

Also, you don't really get the fact that youth = inexperience?  I mean, that's just a fact of life, brah.

I understand, but you're assuming that life experience is somehow correlated to taste in films. And I'm not sure you mean to, but you're making it seem like your taste in film is superior to mine.

This is all subjective, there isn't a better or worse opinion.

OK, so you didn't like Transformers, whatever. You think Blade Runner sucks too, well that's too bad. I'm not really bothered by your opinions, I'm just bothered by the way you present them. Then again, this kind of shit is commonplace on message boards.

I'm aware that throughout life my opinions will change, but I highly doubt that has anything to do with my experience. On top of that, it isn't like I'm prepubescent. I'm not old, obviously, but don't treat me like a kid. You can't be more than 10 years older than me, not really a world of difference there.

I was just taken aback by Blade Runner hate for two reasons:
1. It's my favorite film, and I biased.
2. The last time I heard somebody say Blade Runner sucked, that person was 12 years old.

As I recall, you said Sin City was the greatest noir film you'd ever seen, but then admitted you'd never seen any film noirs because you didn't like "long, epic movies." So, yeah, I'm definitely better informed than you. :lol

Also, I never said Blade Runner sucks.  Seems your feelings are getting hurt because you identify yourself with the movie too closely...don't become another Green Shinobi, dude.  I never even said Blade Runner was a BAD movie.

That was like a year or two ago. I'm over it. I pray I don't still come off as the flaming douche I was then.

I don't identify at all with it, and I'm not getting my feelings hurt. I made an off-hand comment about you hating on two movies in two different threads I happened to enjoy, and then you like...I'm not even sure what you were trying to do after I said that.

Regardless, I've ceased to care.

I own the big Blade Runner limited edition DVD suitcase thing.  I'm definitely not a BR hater.  But I can call the movie out on its numerous weaknesses.  It's definitely not Ridley Scott's best.  I only say this because you're convinced some offhand comments about BR's cheesy music and Sean Young's acting somehow mean I "hate" it.

Real talk.

I saw the Maltese Falcon movie not too long ago, and this is after I've read the book a couple times, and the movie version cuts out a lot of great scenes.  I don't know how I'd feel about the movie if I wasn't nerding over what wasn't there.

Green Shinobi, log off of Raban's account!

I just finished a great book for a history class called Pocahantas: The Powhatan Dillema.  It kept making want to watch Pocahantas so I could point out the innaccuracies with a new-found knowledge.  Instead, I rented The New World.  I tried the same tactic but after about 20 minutes in I was so lost in the gorgeous cinematography and score that I forgot what I was doing and immensely enjoyed the film.  Most of it was shot on 65mm and in natural light and is just so completely strikingly beautiful.  I'm going to buy this on Bluray ASAP.

are you a fan of terrence malick's other films? thought i'd ask since he's one of my favorite directors.

Out of everything, the pacing? I haven't seen the theatrical version in ages, so I don't really remember it too well, but pacing isn't something I had an issue with. The beginning was pretty ill-paced, but after that each section just played out on its own, like Pulp Fiction.

Raising Arizona - good fun, had no idea it was going to be as weird as it was.

Forbidden Kingdom - great action, but characters and story felt pretty shallow even for this kind of movie.  I couldn't buy Jet Li's performance as the mischievous monkey unfortunately.  Neat to see Jackie Chan doing drunk kung fu again.  I still enjoyed it overall.

Donnie Darko - the director's cut version, never seen the original.  Totally intriguing, and I suspect more enjoyable on subsequent viewings.

Thirded. Man, that movie is just sublime in its cartoon nature, all the while maintaining the Coen bros. signature feeling. It's one of my favorite movies.

I saw The Island yesterday. Scarlett :drool
Yeah, yeah. Scarlett is sexy, but that movie is complete crap. Big budget, no brains, so much wasted opportunity to make something that actually, you know MAKES SENSE.

Thank you.  I'm so tired of having to defend the fact that I didn't like Sin City to everyone.  Pretty, but also pretty awful.

Do people generally like the movie?

In my experience, people seem indifferent towards it.  I enjoyed the Marv story and...that's actually it.

went to Gothenburg International Film Festival again, got a late start this year and only saw four movies.  :-\

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Haven't seen the Ferrara original, although I've heard that it doesn't have too much common with this Herzog version. I liked this, despite a quite simplistic narrative and some shitty performances from the supporting cast. Some good lulz with Cage going more and more out of control, and some nice weird Herzogy interludes as well. This copy didn't seem to be cropped properly so in the opening scenes there was boom mic dipping galore, like 7 or 8 times in one scene :lol

First Squad
Russian/Japanese/Canadian co-produced anime about weird events taking place during the battle for Stalingrad. Passable animation, all russian voice cast and the movie is regularly interrupted by mockumentary interviews with "war veterans", "historians" etc. Pretty silly story, and at only 70 minutes the narrative feels a bit rushed towards the end. Quite clichéed with the TEENAGE ELITE SQUAD protagonists, of which you really only get to know one person properly. Music by DJ Krush though (y)

Strapped 'n Strong
Docu about gang members in the Hague, Netherlands. For some reason this gang has taken the Crips name, colors and gangsigns, almost like setting up a franchise gang! Follows individual gang members very closely, you get to see a lot of illegal activities very openly, while at the same time allowing them to show both their superficial dumb gangster side and their more emotional side when they talk about their shitty backgrounds. Nicely shot (no pun intended).

Pianomania
This one was really good. Herzog-ish docu about a really passionate professional (a Steinway grand piano tuner/technician), on the verge of the kooky. Great editing, really funny moments. Much recommended! Here's the trailer: http://oval-film.com/wordpressEN/?page_id=239

It actually gets worse on subsequent viewings IMO.  I really liked it the first time I saw it but everytime I watch it now, I enjoy it less and less.  I initially thought that maybe it was because I was a teenager when I first saw it and it was pseudo-"deep" for back then, but now I just think it doesn't hold up for repeat viewings.

Also, the DC of Donnie Darko kind of fucks things up. The theatrical release is better. In attempting to explain away the mystery, the DC just sort of kills the vibe.

Invictus - quite average, and too long. Since everyone already knows the ending, the film just drags on and on without making any points except the typical sports drama allegory of overcoming adversity. Mandela adds trimmings of forgiveness, acceptance and courage.

High points - when Piennar (Damon) visits Mandela's cell

               - When Damon screams "Focus, Focus hard" in his faux South African Accent, all I could hear was, "Fuck us, Fuck us hard."

I think I prefer The Matrix. It's pretty lean and mean action flick that hits all the right notes. Terminator 2 suffers from typical Cameron drag, where we sit through ten to twenty minutes that could be cut.

Eh, I think The Matrix is pretty steeped in 90s conventions. That's not to say Terminator 2 is a bad film or anything, but I think I made it known in another thread that I'm still burnt out from countless replays over the years.

Also, I feel like this never gets said enough: Edward Furlong is awful in Terminator 2. I mean, his performance is really, really bad. The Matrix has its shares of hokey lines ("Not like this, not like this.") but nothing approaches some of the cringe-worthy dialogue from Terminator 2.

Donnie Darko - the director's cut version, never seen the original.  Totally intriguing, and I suspect more enjoyable on subsequent viewings.
I think its more due to the fuckhead fanbase.
Possibly.  The nerd worship of the movie makes me kinda nauseous.

I can imagine the fanbase is pretty full-on being that the writer/director seemed to put in lots of little things that tie together (been listening to the commentary track).  But even the director says something along the lines of "I'll have to better tie everything together on the next film".

While some people might "get it" no problems, I think the film demands a lot of the average viewer make to ultimately make sense of the movie.  Some might call that "deep" but I call it "crap storytelling".  I did enjoy the movie though, with the caveat that I'd have to watch it more than once or get info from outside the movie to fully understand it.

what's wrong with your eyes?

I like Terminator 2 more than The Matrix.  Terminator 2 was an awesome action movie and at parts an awesome thriller.  Terminator 2 went from the awesome scene of Arnold against the entire police force right into them running from the T-1000.  Matrix had a lot of good action, but they did nothing to make Agents seem like a huge threat.  Before the final confrontation you see Trinity dropping one; this is after Morpheus gives the whole "I'VE SEEN MEN EMPTY CLIPS AND HIT NOTHING BUT AIR" yeah whatever.  I'm not even including the three or more agents killed when Neo is on the minigun.
