Ran
Proof that even at the end of his career Akira Kurosawa still knew how to make a great movie. While I don't think it quite reaches the heights of, say, Seven Samurai or maybe even Kagemusha, it's still a very engaging movie with some great performances, particular from Tatsuya Nakadai as the aging Hidetora. One scene in particular that really struck me was the battle scene at the one hour mark. The way that the first half is silent except for the score was a really great choice, I think it made the slaughter even more brutal. And then the way sound is suddenly restored with the clap of gunshot was another great choice. The ending was pretty depressing, but it's based on Shakespeare so that's hardly a surprise.
