Let the Right One In

The book almost ruined the movie for me. The book is chock full of characters with personality. Even the drunks - seemingly minor characters compared to Oskar and Eli - like Lacke and Jocke have their own tale and hopes and dreams. It's a book encompassing multiple characters and pov's. So I was shocked when the movie made many of these characters have extremely small parts in the movie. I don't know why, but I expected some of the more intimate details in the writing to show through in this movie adaptation: like how pathetic a person Oskar is, or Hakkan's relishing sense of pedophilia towards Eli, or the sense of guilt he feels for his victims.

This is still a great movie, fantastic even - arguably better than the book - but I guess I slightly disappointed due to ridiculous expectations set by the novel. I don't know why I'm being so hard on it, as I haven't really enjoyed a horror film this much in quite some time.

Really great, highly recommended. Just don't read the book first. In fact, this is one of the rare cases where I'd suggest watching the film first because it's arguably better. Though it's lacking the more intimate details and all the neat characterization, it still contains the same plot and overall tone.

One of the rare instances where I like the Movie much more than the Book.

Saw Nightmare last night, wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be.
I saw it Friday and I had super low expectations so I guess I wasn't totally disappointed.  The pacing was horrible.  The writing was lol.  The acting was  :-X.  Every dude in that movie looks like they were always about to cry or fart.  I actually liked Freddy though.  Too bad almost everything else sucked.  But I enjoyed laughing at it and seeing some violence.  Just don't expect anything more.  Seriously.  Nothing more.

I'm just so split.

The book has the more interesting character details and is far, far, far more dark; but the movie is still dark, just a different kind, and contains the more important details in the story without the baggage.

Both are fantastic and I really wish I saw the movie first.

Oh, I know. It's a great adaptation. There's so many details in the book, spanning multiple characters and pov's, that I was just plain curious how the fuck they'd put it on film.

::) Who's the director?

One of the best changes in the movie compared to the book is also the change in season. The cold, winter landscape does wonders for the film's atmosphere. Whereas the book (iirc) takes place in the fall, the late month of October into November.

Saw Sherlock Holmes. Haters are mentally distinguished mentally-challenged. It nailed the Holmes/Watson chemestry and the Holmes/Adler chemestry. It's by far the best original Holmes since Seven Percent Solution and it is the closest version to the original stories. People are too used to the various BBC versions to recognize a real re-telling of Holmes.

As someone who has read a handful of Arthur Conan Doyle stories, I found Robert Downey Jr.'s take on the character to be pretty faithful to the source material. Far more than how Holmes was portrayed by Basil Rathbone, which I gather is how most people thought of Sherlock Holmes in pop-culture prior to Downey Jr. taking on the role.

I have never seen the BBC series, so I can't speak for those.

The Basil Rathbone ones certainly aren't faithful to the material, since they took place in contemporary times...they even had Holmes fighting against Nazis and shit.

The BBC series is really fucking solid, Wrath.

The attire, the stuffy catchphrases and almost omnipresent attitude contrasted heavily with Doyle's work. Because Watson and almost all the supporting characters were comic foils, it forced Holmes to be a master in scholar in, well, just about everything - which was certainly not true in the books.

Okay, yeah, Lestrade and Watson were pretty much there for comedy relief, but it's not like they helped him out much in the short stories I read.  Watson was there mainly to be in awe of Holmes and to prove how smart Holmes was by making wrong guesses so that Holmes could explain things to him (and by extension, the reader).

I would agree, but Holmes had weaknesses in Doyle's works, and his mastery of deduction often saved the day. Watson also pointed out areas in which Holmes was not a Rhodes Scholar. In contrast, Rathbone is seemingly a super genius surrounded by distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

His stuffy attitude also didn't sit well with me. Not that Holmes' wasn't high on himself, but I always thought House was a pretty solid guess on how the character would play out in film (or television). Downey Jr. is more or less, the Joel Silver-ized version of that character archetype.

Oh, I agree - he's not a dick. Just that I felt House was a logical guess on how that archetype would play out in film and television.

That said, I wouldn't say the character was emotionless, just largely devoid of empathy. He certainly wasn't stuffy, though.

I watched Terminator Salvation tonight. I would label it aggressively bad. Start-to-finish, nearly completely rubbish.

High points:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kid playing Kyle Reese is cool. His imitation of Biehn as a teenager works really well.
Sam Worthington was better than Christian Bale.
Terminator effects on cyborg were really clean.
Arnie "cameo" was well done.
Giant harvester terminator was better than Transformers designs. Auto-Terminator bikes, too.

Low points:

Most of the other actors are melodramatic. Common was reading directly off the script.
Nothing makes sense.

I seriously don't even know where to start. McG tries to pay homage to the Terminator (and ALIENS and THE GREAT ESCAPE and APOCALYPSE NOW) visuals, including the "resistance" bunker, but instead of being a bunch of scared people hiding and maybe sneaking into a base when they find out Skynet has a time machine, it's a FULL ON ARMY AND NAVY with A10s, submarines, and enough medical know-how to perform heart transplant surgery on the fly. Early on, we're informed that traveling at night is not safe, because Hunter/Killers have IR, but sexy pilot girl builds a giant fire in order to stay warm, out in the open. Why does "Marcus" have to be in the opening sequence's base? How does he survive the blast? Connor tells all the prisoners "GET TO THE TRANSPORT!" but there are no transports; he infiltrated alone after driving a motorcycle from daytime until well after nightfall, and only much later actually calls for air support.

Anyone who liked this better than Terminator 3 wasn't paying attention.

Lohan Does Porn
More or less.
by Scott Collura
May 4, 2010 - O.K., that headline makes things sound better than they might be (for us, if not for Ms. Lohan). In fact, what we're reporting here is that Lindsay Lohan will likely be starring as Linda Lovelace, the late porn star and Deep Throat headliner.

The L.A. Times reports that a producer for the indie drama Inferno has confirmed that Lohan will play Lovelace in the film. A formal announcement is expected to be made at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, where the filmmakers will be trolling for money to actually, you know, make the movie. Bill Pullman is also attached to play Hugh Hefner.

Hugo Weaving Confirmed as the Red Skull in
Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed “The Red Skull”. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in THE WOLFMAN and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from TRANSFORMERS and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN as well as Noah the Elder from HAPPY FEET. His other film credits include starring in V FOR VENDETTA, THE MATRIX franchise, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Frank Welker auditioned for Megatron but they rejected him because they wanted a big name. They wanted George Cloony for Prime, but when fans almost rioted over that they threw them a bone by casting Peter Cullen, but they wouldn't cave in for Megatron. They allowed Welker to do one line of dialog as Soundwave in T2.

Wow that sucks. At least Cullen got paid well I'm guessing.

So far all I'm hearing is good news about this flick. Still indifferent to Evans as Cap, but from what I hear he actually has some chops coming from a recent drama flick he did?

Chris Evans is a pretty cool cat. I think he'll be a good fit.

So they're starting the origin story in WWII I see. Are they gonna freeze him to bring him to the modern world, like Lee did, or will they just save that for the sequel/Avengers.

You're probably right. I'll wait to see the suit before I get excited or not excited. The Thor suit looks rather weak imo
