I'm not a big fan, but it has two bits I absolutely loved. It is no Anchorman/Talladega Nights. I think the McKay/Ferrell combo works when both push their patented brand of non sequitur humor. When they try to wrap a coherent narrative around their bits, it's often painful and forced. The worst elements of Anchorman and Talladega Nights are when the duo tries to create a narrative.

I don't watch McKay/Ferrell for compelling stories, I watch it for whales vaginas and stuff. They need to embrace that.

eb challenge: name a movie that's funnier than anchorman. i dare you. the hangover sucks so don't even mention. zoolander is a good number two.

valhalla rising: one of the strangest films i've seen in a while. it's a very atmospheric period piece about a warrior and a boy who team up with a group of vikings who are about to go on a crusade to reconquer the holy land. after an incredible first two chapters the pace slows down considerably--it's only ninety minutes long but it felt much longer than that--and becomes more and more surrealistic. and moody. it features tons of beautiful landscapes and an exceptional soundtrack. i dug it, but you really have to be in the mood for it.

the cell: pretty good serial killer movie where the killer is hooked up to a dream machine to find out where his last victim is being held. visually exceptional looking film. it was weird seeing vince vaughn play a cop, though, lol. i need to see the fall. and am looking forward to immortals.

long list

Solaris(1972): One of the quietest films I've seen. It also has some of the most beautiful shots on film that I've seen. Great film if you're in the quiet mood. I noticed the space trip sequence was paid homage to in the Farscape opening credits.

Up in the Air: Much better than I expected. Very tight script with a good ending.

Ong Bak: Great stunts and fights. I love how the street chase sequence features obstacles for no reason other than to show off the athletic abilities.

Ong Bak 2: Not as good as original. Attempted to have a story and failed. Lack of stunts really hurts it.

The Protector: Ridiculous and awesome for it. Also features stunts!

Ip Man: Chinese Rocky IV

A Town Called Panic: Greatest story ever told. It's like friendly french Axe Cop story telling.

Gloomy Sunday: I figured this would be based on the song and it was. Seems like just another legend based off the song. This one involving a love triangle and nazis. Enjoyable.

I've watched SNL pretty consistently week after week season after season since I started taping it on a VCR around like 1994 or so as a kid. It's been about a decade since I've actually enjoyed it. But I keep going out of habit. I think I'll probably be still watching it till I die at this point.

Hot Rod is a pretty under-rated recent SNL (produced by Lorne Michaels and written by SNL writers so I guess it counts) movie I think.

Odd that Lorne Michaels and the SNL production staff can put out decent movies in the last decade like that, MacGruber and especially Mean Girls yet have such a mediocre show week after week.

Death at a Funeral

I never saw the original, so I was thoroughly entertained.  I thought the cast did a good job and the jokes were nonstop, so even if some didn't work enough did that it was always entertaining.  Felt a little long by the end at 90+ mins, but overall thumbs up.

Your point being? Its not like the movie was marketed as "that skit from SNL!" You could see the trailer or commercials or whatever and clearly see it was a MacGyver spoof without ever watching SNL.

I think most people were aware it's a SNL sketch though. SNL has been getting really good ratings the last few seasons. And the SNL sketch of the character is extremely one note.

I didn't even know it was coming out until you guys talked about it here, then I had no idea what the hell it was until Willco explained it was from an SNL skit and then I lost interest until everyone said it was awesome.  Now I'm waiting to Netflix it.

I thought Hot Rod was pretty mediocre. It has a couple of great bits, but long stretches of mediocrity. A lot of the jokes fall flat.

I think MacGruber works because they're able to push the R-rating. If they were handcuffed a PG-13 rating, it wouldn't have been nearly as funny.

I just watched Uwe Boll's 2009 film Rampage.

It's the story of a kid who's fed up with it all, so he makes bulletproof armor and goes out to slaughter everyone in his small town.

There's a scene with a bingo hall too

Rampage was terrible.  GAF has terrible taste in movies because they were going batshit crazy over it.  It was as bad as his other movies just without the cheese.  I SAID A LATTE or some shit.  Horrible.

Synecdoche, New York
Watched this last night.  It was quite a bit to take in.  I really liked it though, especially the speech at the end.  It reminded me a bit of Lynch where everything kinda felt like a dream almost.  I'll have to rewatch it to decide exactly how I feel about it but I thought it was pretty great.  My only complaint would be that it was a bit longwinded, but that was probably just my mood.  I started it late and I was sleepy.

Just saw The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Really good. I didn't really understand David Fincher as a director for the American adaptation until I saw the film, and realized it's right up his alley. Daniel Craig should be a really good Blomkvist. I highly doubt there's an American actress alive that can match Noomi Rapace's performance, so that'll be interesting to see who they cast. I'm eager to see the next film but from what I hear, it isn't as good as the first.

Also, Equilibrium is fucking terrible, and I got so much shit as a kid for thinking so when I first saw that movie.

Ended up watching A Single Man which is about a full 180 from what I was looking for  :lol but it was a good movie.

The cinematography that went for that old slightly out of focus grainy, desaturated bloomy look was really nice.  There's one scene that is black and white and looks just amazing.  And the music wowowow reminded me of a Wong-Kar Wai soundtrack.  In fact the style of the film as a whole was a bit WKW-ish.  Great performances too.  Was a very well made film.  Story was...ok.  The ending was bullshit.  I'm getting sick of what I call the "WAGES OF FEAR ENDING" that's seems even more in-fashion these years than it used to be where

I need to go a few pages back and read the discussion on this.  I liked the background plot as in, if it was a short story or a videogame plot, it'd be alright.  The actual movie part within the plot was just ok though.  Not bad, but nothing really fresh or interesting.  Makes me excited for Dead Space 2 though!

the ghost writer: decent enough political thriller that reminded me of similar movies from the 70s, which i quite like about it. there's a constant sense of suspense and the performances by mcgregor and brosnan were great. a bunch of things really bugged me:

1]
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the ghost finds out that emmett's been working for the cia simply by googling it. and then the former foreign secretary is surprised to hear that information. ridiculous.
[close]

2] i immediately knew that
spoiler (click to show/hide)
lang's wife knew more about the death of mccarra when they were having the conversation
[close]
, so the ending wasn't really that surprising.
3] i felt that the ending--the last ten seconds or so--didn't fit with the rest of the movie.
4] catrall's english accent was awful. by far the worst thing about this film.

I didn't think Catrall's accent was bad, she actual played her part well and took me a while to realize it was her. But huh, why cast her? Same with Jim Belushi - he played his part fine, but  ??? ??? ???

Kick Ass movie is so amazing. The movie should be named Hit-Girl, though. She's way more kick ass than Kick Ass.

Watched some other movies in the last week:

Sat through an Ice Age marathon with a few friends.

- Ice Age

Great movie. And funny too.

8/10

- Ice Age 2

trash

4/10

Ice Age 3

trash

5/10

They really raped the sequels. The first one was so good.

Prinses Mononoke

Boring and tedious. The anime is like one hour too long. I liked the beginning, but the movie started to become trash during the middle part.

6/10

Grave of the Firelflies

Wow, this was really good. It almost made me cry. I watched it until the end and then rewatched the first 5 minutes again. Powerful stuff right there.

8.5/10

Alice in Wonderland

Enjoyable, but totally fogettable. I liked the special effects and designs, though.

6/10

Clash of the Titans

Utter and utter trash. I expected so much better after seeing the trailers. Oh well.

2/10

The Man from Earth

This movie totally annihilates christianity.  :lol
I think I'm becoming a buddhist...
Awesome movie. Very interesting to watch.

9/10
