Mononoke is ok.  I don't think it's bad in any way, but it's not very memorable.  It mainly gets a lot of praise because it was most people's first exposure to ghibli or serious Miyazaki if they'd seen Totoro/Kiki as kids.

Grave the Fireflies, which is makes you never want to firebomb Tokyo again, is yeah the better film of the two.  So sad ;_;  I know a lot of people who won't watch the movie because they just don't want to deal with seeing the results of the US destroying Tokyo.  Kind of crazy that a cartoon has that kind of emotional power.

Re-watched Kick-Ass and watched Hot Tub Time Machine for the first time.  Kick-Ass was pretty good.  I hear they're working on a sequel now.  Hot Tub Time Machine was pretty funny, a little predictable, but not enough to ruin it.

Watched The Hangover on the in-flight program. It was OK. Zach was great. Everything else was fairly tame. Or maybe it was edited? Everything else, language, puking, etc. was uncut. Probably I was just expecting too much.

After that I started Legion, and while Dennis Quaid was lecturing his son about "what you feel is right," I decided sleeping would be preferable. I am certain I chose wisely.

Picked up Fistful of Dollars; For a Few Dollars More; and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for 13 bucks. Watched the first one for the first time in years. It was still awesome.

The comic sequel to Kick-Ass comes out this Wednesday. They haven't said anything about a movie sequel and since Vaughn is tied up with X-Men they'd probably get Brett Ratner to do it.

You really need to go see Matthew Vaughn's last movie before Kick-Ass, Stardust. You'd love it. It's a fantasy. And better than Kick-Ass.

I really liked Kick-Ass but it's the weakest of his 3 films he has directed I think.

Vaughn has not signed on to do Kick-Ass 2 nor has a Kick-Ass 2 even been green-lit. Don't trust IMDB.

Layer Cake is his best. Doesn't it go without saying though? No one needs to repeat that because it's obviously Vaughn's best. Fucking amazing movie. One of the best gangster movies from the last decade.

Saw The Other Guys last night.  Not good.  Handful of moderately funny jokes, but a lot of it falls completely flat and considering how much time is spent on the story (which is odd for an Adam McKay movie to begin with), it makes no fucking sense.  They even appear to frequently confuse the denomination of cash swindled, which sounded like it was switching between "billion" and "million" depending on who was speaking.  Maybe I was just zoning out whenever the plot was being forced along.

It was okay.  Buying Val Kilmer as some sort of hard bad ass was pretty difficult.  Prison was almost lol crazy terrible.  I guess it was just cheesy.  But the performances were pretty good and it was entertaining.  Nothing I'd ever watch again.  GAF's overhyped shit again.

Rashomon

Actually the first time I've watched this, despite being familiar with the movie and what it's name has come to mean over time. I would say that it's not one of my favorite Kurosawa movies [Ikiru, Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo would probably be my top 3], but it's still a very good movie and the more I think about it and read about it, the more it grows in my mind. At first it seems like almost a simple story, several different witness present their version of the events. But it really reaches its peak when the fourth story emerges and casts a different light over everything. It's also a great story about how people involved with a particularly awful situation can lie, even to themselves, about how it took place, effectively making them untrustworthy witnesses. But, even someone only peripherally involved may taint their version with their own preconceptions, knowledge or lack of it, and personal motives. Which story is the truth? None of them. And all of them. That's the only thing that really makes sense, they all have elements of truth, but we are given no indication as to which is the absolute truth, or even if any of them are.

Loved the whole movie, perfect mix of drama, tension, comedy. Mother really made me want to check out Joong-ho Bong's other films, but foreign DVDs are hardly ever carried in stores where I live. Hoping the "this fall" date for Netflix coming to Canada comes sooner rather than later and that the selection is good, I hope for but don't expect a similar library that the US gets.

Eh.

Michael Keaton was the best thing about the flick, personally. There were some funny gags, but the story is paper-thin and most of the film is pretty forgettable. It's not bad, which is a step up from garbage like Land of the Lost.

(I lol'd during some interactions between Ferrell and Mendes, as well. That stuff was pretty great.)

I lost it when he misplaced his briefing about the serial rapist at the Bed, Bath and Beyond staff meeting. The constant TLC references were great. Keaton has always had strong comedic range, it's a shame he hasn't used it more in his career.

The Beach.

Ew.  And being stuck with that pack of massive wankers is my idea of hell, not paradise.

The original Ring

Gore Verbinski's remake is perhaps my favourite movie but the original is awesome too, and I'm glad the two movies are quite different in some respects.  I thought I had seen this years ago, but I think that was the original Ring 2.

Mulholland Drive

I usually despise movies where I don't have a clue what happened, and if it weren't for the awesome atmosphere and characters I probably would have hated the film once the storyline went to hell.  But I was totally hooked despite being lost.  I have my theories and have avoided reading other people's theories, so am looking forward to watching it again.

The Big Lebowski

I haven't been blown away by the Coen's earlier films yet, (No Country utterly blew me away), but this was good fun and probably the best of the rest of their films that I've seen.  I still have to watch Hudsucker Proxy, The Man Who Wasn't There, O Bother Where Art Thou, Intolerable Cruelty and Burn.

What was that movie that had a trailer on the Ninja Turtles 2 vhs tape? I think it was right after Suburban Commando. It was about this girl who lives in this crazy family. I always wanted to see it based on that preview.

edit:

It was called Step Kids in the preview, but it was renamed "Big Girls Don't Cry, They Get Even"

Entertaining.  But I honestly liked it better before Hit Girl and Big Daddy showed up.  It was still good.  But I was enjoying seeing a regular dude trying to be a superhero.  It would be cool just to see him evolve and get better while being funny and a little more realistic.  Still good though.

Fiddler on the Roof

Hate musicals but really wanted to watch this for some reason, have never seen it onstage. Jewison handled it's onstage origin fairly well - it never felt like a filmed play. The actor who played Tevye was amazing and truly held the movie together (plus he was credited as Topol, just Topol, how cool is that). The look and feel of the village and villagers also felt authentic - I thought early on that that actually might be to a fault as the reality and the grittiness of the setting would just make the singing and made-for-stage dialogue even more conspicuous in it's silliness, but it all came together.

After.Life is almost great, it'll have to settle for good.  Its a wannabe Twilight Zone episode with a good premise (dead lady wakes up in mortician's place, insists she's not dead, dude says otherwise).  With a predictable strong performance from Liam Neeson as the avancular/sinister funeral director and a committed performance (lots and lots of nudity) from Christina Ricci, and nice cinematography, it should be a slam dunk.  But its not, the central mystery about the protagionists health or lack therof is pretty damn stupid.  The movie waffles between a more ambigious, dreamlike tone and realism.  I would have liked it more if it were weirder or more straightforward, as is its a polished turd.

A Scanner Darkly

Looked fucking awesome and I thought it did a great job of condensing the novel into a brisk and entertaining 1:40 movie. I always find it hard to critique a film where I'm able to fill in blanks or add characterization myself from reading the novel, but I think it hit just about all the right notes. It skips over a lot of stuff in the first half of the book -- mainly stuff establishing just how insidious Barris is -- but I think it kept enough in to show the walls closing in on Arctor. It also skips a lot of Arctor's experience at the end, but once again, I think the main point (and twist) is handled well. Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely fantastic as Barris, Keanu Reeves of course is a natural at playign a spaced-out drug addict, and Winona Ryder was hot even cel-shaded.

since she spends about 1/3rd of her screen time nekkid, there's a part where you there's a long, clear view of her backside and you can just barely see the tramp stamp the makeup people vallienty tried to cover up.

It's amazing that they keep making more and more even though they've all been terrible past the first movie.

I don't even think the first one holds up really well. When I was a little kid though, man. I fucking HATED monkeys.

Some parts of it come across as a bit heavy-handed [although I think that was kind of intentional based on how the movie ended], but I think it holds up okay. Doesn't change that everyone since the first has been a step down in quality.

I see it called Ringu even in English releases, so I'll use that, and The Ring for the remake. I'm a huge fan of Ringu. I was pissed off from the moment I'd heard it was being remade, so I've never really given the original a fair shake. I didn't even like their explanation for why the photos are distorted; I don't think crap like that benefits from explanation. To the contrary, leaving things a mystery can increase the sense of dread.

The technical proficiency and the lengths they went to in adjusting The Ring for "the west" were admirable, but ultimately I am saddened whenever Hollywood remakes something just so they don't have to ask the audiences to read subtitles, sit through an overdubbed audio track, and/or watch non-whites on screen. ...Though I guess that last bit doesn't fit in with the recent spate of remakes from Northern European films.

great on every level. It's a pretty long, procedural/detective movie yet is never boring.

The original Ring

Gore Verbinski's remake is perhaps my favourite movie but the original is awesome too, and I'm glad the two movies are quite different in some respects.  I thought I had seen this years ago, but I think that was the original Ring 2.

I must admit, I found the remake so different it really goes way beyond the usual slop of remakes.  In away I feel the two movies work together to embellish the myth further, rather than one being a carbon copy of the other for western audiences.

I must read the book, I've read some of Koji Suzuki's other books (which are awesome) but never read the original Ring.

I only saw it recently too, and it really is the bee's knees.

Orphan
Holy fuck!  This movie is ridiculous.  I heard about the ending twist a long time ago and it was the only thing that made me even want to see it a bit, but I got it from Netflix and I really enjoyed watching it with a friend.  It was so fucking ridiculous and awesome.  I surprisingly loved it.

On the return flight, I bit the bullet and watched Legion. It was pretty lame; it honestly would have been better served with less effects and editing. I could see it being performed as a stage play, since it's essentially entirely taking place in the diner. There is a backbone of something potentially really good in the story, and the way it ultimately resolves between Gabriel and Michael. Unfortunately it is destroyed by action sequences which manage to be either entirely predictable or completely impossible to parse. I'm a fan of stories which cast religion into question, and require thinking about how we interpret our own spirituality. There's the germ of that here, but it is quickly run roughshod over by trying to fit it into a sloppy mix of the first Terminator movie and Assault on Precinct 13.

this weekend was a bit of a movie watching blowout

Gojira- had never seen the original non-americanized version despite loving the series to death (even the smog monster).  it was good and the a-bomb allegory was laid on thick thick thick.  there were several shots where godzilla looked hella goofy with pingpong ball eyes.

Death At A Funeral (remake)
- this movie was flat and bland and we only made it about 45 minutes into it before we gave up on it.  see the original as it's far far far better.

Saturday Night Fever- I'd only caught bits and pieces of this and its known more for lolseventies than anything else, but the film is actually really really well done with some very interesting stuff to say in what is essentially the equivalent to a Stomp The Yard / Step Up film.  Actual character arcs and it tackles many still relevant social issues in an interesting way.  it is highly unlikely that i could convince anyone to watch this unironically, but i think you may actually be missing out.

Election - i love jonnie to.  he's probably my favorite genre director in HK and this tale of the bi-annual election to leader of the Chinese organized crime family is pretty amazing.  it's mostly all dialogue but it's interesting and fascinating and when there are bursts of violence it's not shocking but just so much more powerful for how it book ends the scenes around it.
