it's so there.  it's more about the change of society on this group of working class Italians than it is about disclol.

Its bad reputation stems from the innumerable parodies.  I really doubt most people who have actually seen it think it's the brainless schlock it's made out to be.  Unless there's a TV edit that cuts out most of the plot.

the tv edit I saw on TNT when I was in high school was pretty terrible.  Or maybe I just dismissed it.  But I don't remember reading anything further "disclol" when I originally saw it.  But good luck convincing anyone to actually watch it.  Much less take it seriously (i think i'm taking this way too seriously but i really do love the movie, it's great)

It's amazing that they keep making more and more even though they've all been terrible past the first movie.

I don't even think the first one holds up really well. When I was a little kid though, man. I fucking HATED monkeys.

No, the first one is still awesome. Charlton Heston, cigarillos! :rock Second one was okay, kinda goofy and James Franciscus is no Heston, but he's still pretty good and the movie was still watchable.

Looks like Damon Lindelof is writing Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien:

The 2nd hour felt a bit long, but otherwise really likable feel good movie.  Morgan Freeman was great in it.

Zombi 2

The majority of the film is pretty damn dull, but goddamn were the make up and special effects stellar. Seriously one of the best visual representations of zombies I've seen in film. It was like an hour and ten minutes of almost nothing happening with one or two cool scenes mixed in, and then a fucking cool climax.

I spent most of the movie wondering how on earth Al Pacino decides what movies he'll do.  Even he can't salvage horrible mediocrity like this.

to be honest, when i heard the premise (rented it on vhs!) and started it, I thought it was going to get darker.  kinda like the truman show.  but it never did.  it went into wacky territory (the concert, oh god, the concert).  i think it may have actually been studio or executive interference.  Especially since I'm sure Al Pacino demanded A HELLUVA PAYCHECK, SON!

This may be my favorite trailer I've seen this year:
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/blackswan/

Darren Aronofsky :bow Looks like a awesome weird mix of David Lynch, Dario Argento, and The Fly.

This fall  is really shaping up to make up for the shitty summer. I mean David Fincher's The Social Network, Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, The Coen Brothers True Grit, & Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan all look like movies I cant miss in theaters.

Shiri

Although it sees itself as a serious actioner with heavy political trappings, actually devolves into something that's even more absurd than the supremely over-the-top The Expendables. It's hard to believe that, but it's true. Most of the major characters enter God-mode whenever a shootout starts up, ensuring that although they are surrounded by a hail of bullets they never get hit [until the movie determines that their time is up, in which God-mode comes down and they get wasted]. The action scenes become a mix of Bourne Identity and The A-Team [in terms of accuracy]. Of course, there's plenty of armored SWAT guys wielding automatic weapons to get taken down by the unarmored, singular bad guy and his pop-gun pistol, a scene [somewhere towards the middle] that ended in the most confusing manner possible. The main "twist" is evident from the very beginning and is so obvious that you actually question whether it could possibly be right, but it is. I fast-forwarded through the last 25 minutes after the only likable character got offed. I had high hopes for this, but they were completely shattered.

Shiri was the first Korean film I ever saw, about a decade ago I guess it was.  I re-watched it again recently and man, it has not held up quite so well, actually maybe it has.

I remembered thinking at the time it was kinda goofy what with the super-chemical-bomb-clown-nose-whatsit, but that's not even the most ridiculous part.  But as silly as the eventual macguffin is, and as just plain dumb as some of the action scenes and characters are, it still kinda works.  Its a thriller/melodrama, and like any good melodrama, once the silliness of the situation is bypassed the emotions they try to evoke can work.  Its actually closer in tone to a good Hong Kong movie then it is most other Korean thrillers, and that's a good thing.  The movie is nuts, and in some ways brazenly amateurish, but I'd still say its more good then bad.

Anyway, I loved seeing a youngish, thinnish Song Kang-Ho as the co-lead and the always awesome dude who plays Oldboy (like you know how to spell his name without checking).  The performances are good all around, even though the central relationship between the chief agent and his girlfriend gets... complicated, its still compelling.  If only more soap opera plots had deadly snipers in them.

Also, I really dug The Expendables, even though its a damned stupid movie.  I found its lunkheadedness to be part of its charm.  Also I found charming was its old school adherence to action, plot, characters, the thing was so authentically 80's that even the fashion sense of the protagonists is non-ironically ugly.  Of course any movie from the Reagan era wouldn't have shook the camera up so dang much, but it wasn't nearly as bad as so many other 'action' movies to utilize the technique as of late.

So while its borderline distinguished mentally-challenged in so many ways that people more talented then me have already addressed, I ended up liking it a lot.  Its got enthusiasm, its got guile, its got a surfeit of badass people doing badass things, who cares if its been done better elsewhere, here, its done well enough.

Looks like a straight Argento ripoff, but hey, I love Argento.
Susperia got an unoffical remake a few years back.  The Woods probably would have gotten a theatrical release if anybody besides MGM had made it, as it was pretty dang good.  Also, Bruce Campbell rocked in it.

And it looks like the Alex Cross franchise is getting rebooted, with Idris Elba getting the role formerly performed by Morgan Freeman.  Good choice, and its great to see him make the big time.  And its also great to see what is perhaps a series of films that is made for adults, wow.  That could be nice.  Shame it has to be based on such movie-of-the-week material, but what the hell, Kiss the Girls was pretty good.

And also, this is probably going to derail the proposed Riddick sequels as David Twohy is writing and directing the Cross film, due to start shooting this coming Spring.  I guess he had a major block of time free up recently or something?

I loved The Expendables, but Shiri just didn't do anything for me at all. I think it's probably because the former had a sense of humor about its ridiculousness, while the latter tried to be super-serious and weighty, which only succeeded in exposing how ridiculous the main plot was and how badly set up many of the action scenes were. I mean, it wasn't like I went in wanting to hate it, I went in wanting to really like it and for a while I actually did. But it just fell apart in the second half.

Am I the only who does not give a fuck about korean films at all?  I mean, I liked oldboy as a teenager and for the crazy antics.  and I can even handle ichi the killer for the same weird crazy plot and shenanigans.  But I have to be in a super rare mood to fucking watch them.  And even then the pacing usually kills me.  That or the obnoxious weird sexual shit all asians apparently have going on.  Just not my type of movies i guess.  I tried to watch a ton of other korean and even japanese movies and I hate them.  The only other asian movies I really like are akira (does that even count?) and kurosawa films.

I've also been wanting to see The Good, The Bad, and The Weird, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've only seen Tale of Two Sisters out of that list.  the pacing killed that movie for me.  I just remember being bored to death.  I wanted to see the host after people were talking about movie the ruins or something.  I remember both being big conversation for a long time.  Well I saw the other one and I decided I should skip the host.  it's on my netflix, but it's like #230 or something.
