The Mummy Returns
Some great ideas with some terrible execution.  I really liked the first and I really wanted to like this one but it seemed like they were creatively bankrupt.  They got the airship and they were going through the valley.  And then Imhotep decided to flood them with a face of water!  Much like the face of sand from the first one, but water this time!!!  The little kid was annoying and ugh.  the flashback memories or whatever were terrible.  But there was enough stuff to make it enjoyable.  I can't believe I passed over these popcorn flicks.  But I heard the third one is trash so I won't be buying that one.

Instead I'm buying Beauty and the Beast tonight :D

Edit: The Mummy was made for 80 million and The Mummy Returns was made for 98 million?  I guess that excuses the terrible CGI.

Well, those actually came out before every single movie released in a year had to cost at least $150 million.

True.  But I think they did some pretty big shit for 80 and 90 million.  I'm now surprised they were actually able to pull all of it off as competently as they were.

CG in the original Mummy wasn't bad for the time. CG in Mummy Returns was horrible.

well I wasn't trying to make it a dick measuring contest :lol  There are definitely more impressive movies when you consider the budgets.  I just assumed it would have been a standard bloated budget blockbuster.  They did pretty good with what they had.

My favorite quote from the movie...

Ardeth Bay: [to Alex] By putting this on, you have started a chain reaction that could bring about the next apocalypse.
[Alex gasps]
Rick: [to Ardeth] You, lighten up.

Goyer can write some fun stuff.

Blade :rock
Hell yeah :rock BUT ..... never, ever, EVER, let that man direct a film again.

The combination of a David Goyer written and Zack Synder directed Superman lends me to believe its going to be heavy on action and style but very limited in terms of story and character development. Although perhaps that is what is needed, that is the exact opposite of Superman Returns.

One good thing is though Jon Hamm has said he is very interested in playing Superman, and Synder has worked with him on his last movie.....

It's not like Superman is a complicated character.  Most people know everything they need to know about Superman's past and emotions.  Just make it badass.  Fuck.  How hard is that?

Based on Goyers stye of writing and Snyders style of directing I doubt it being badass will be much of a problem.

Quote from: Jon Hamm
"I certainly haven't been informed of that.  They might want to run that by me.  I don't know, I think unless Superman's power was the power of being really old... I maybe aged out of that competition."

Would've been a good choice 5 years ago for a non-origin story Superman. I'm pretty sure I'd rather have Don Draper though.

they need to be looking at the earliest golden age superman stories, where he would throw thugs into brick walls head first and toy with criminals by dropping them from the tops of buildings (then jumping down and catching them), instead of the boy scout the character turned into by the mid 1940s (although i still find somewhat of a charm to those stories)

the story will follow Clark Kent, a journalist traveling the world “trying to decide if he should, in fact, even become Superman.” Sounds like an interesting take on the material, right?

...

the reason Warner Bros. supposedly picked Snyder for Man of Steel is that David Goyer’s script is a bit of a mess as it was rushed. The studio needs to get a new Superman movie in production by 2011 or they’ll lose the rights to make said film.

Warner Bros. needs someone who won’t spend months or even years trying to get it just right (i.e. Aronofsky), because time is the one thing they don’t have … We’re told that Snyder was not really Warner’s first choice to direct Superman, but that a director needed to be hired imminently. Privately, even Snyder has confided to agency sources that the current Superman script needs work, but clearly Warner Bros. believes he can get it done faster than Aronofsky.

I'm sure everything will go swimmingly.

In other super hero movie news, that red head from Superbad and Zombieland is Gwen Stacey in the new Spider-Man.

Beauty and the Beast
:bow B&TB :bow2

Amazing.  I hadn't seen it in years but this movie is fucking awesome.  The songs were even great.  It really felt like classic Disney.  And the blu ray transfer is fucking crazy amazing.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
I hadn't seen this one in years.  I remembered liking it but man, it's completely average in every way and so many of the effects are dated.  It has to have the biggest copout of an ending ever.

"How did you beat him, Harry??"
"For some reason his face burned when I touched it!  Iunno!"

"Dumbledore, how did I get the stone?"
"Only someone who was looking for it that didn't want to use it could find it.  One of my more brilliant ideas."
"So what the fuck?  He couldn't have found it anyways?  What the fuck is even the point of the stone then?  This is fucking distinguished mentally-challenged."

And at the end I saw the name Chris Columbus and it all made sense.

Why would a director like Arnofsky want to do Superman? Or Wolverine, for that matter.

Dunno, guess I'm just surprised that the director who directed Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain wants to make comic book shit now.

Emma Stone is blonde, not a red head so it makes sense.

Even if she is naturally blonde, most of her films has her with red hair.  It's like Christina Hendricks rocking red hair despite being a natural blonde.  Not that it actually matters since Billy Corgan wore a red wig in Spider-Man 1 and people liked that.

Why would a director like Arnofsky want to do Superman? Or Wolverine, for that matter.

Dunno, guess I'm just surprised that the director who directed Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain wants to make comic book shit now.

Nolan was similar and he went onto do Batman.

Besides, I think Arnofsky is still known for Requiem for a Dream and he probably wants something bigger so people would stop associating him with that trash.

Aronofsky is desperate to break into the world of big budget studio movies in hopes of getting big budgets for his original work like directors like Nolan, Spielberg, etc. can do. He apparently really really really wanted the Superman gig. It's almost sad to watch how desperate he is to slum it just to be given the free pass status of Nolan/Spielberg/Cameron/etc because he is a pretty fucking brilliant filmmaker.

I'd like to see him actually get the Wolverine project just to see what the hell he'd do with such a terrible franchise.  I imagine he'd be extremely reigned in, but he's gotta have something pretty interesting in mind to even want to do it, especially if he's doing it (as Cheebs said) with the intention of success on a level that'll make his original stuff untouchable.

It's a great character if done right. And with a guy with interesting ideas behind it, it can lend itself to quite a special movie. Don't understand the whole "but its wolverine  :-\" bullshit you guys trying to pull.

If he completely ignores the first and the x-men movies and just makes some random movie that happens to have Wolverine and not deal with the issues of being a sequel then maybe I can see Aronofsky pulling off something unique. But if its really Wolverine 2. As in a direct sequel to the first one? Then that is complete waste of his talents.
