Beauty and the Beast has a huge pacing flaw. If you'll notice, the two are only uneasy around each other for all of one night.  That same night he saves her from the wolves and one montage/song later they're in love. No buildup to their feelings, it sucks.

Possibly so, but it doesn't mean that Beauty and the Beast is overrated.  It's awesome.

... Are you serious?  You're picking apart romantic progression in a fucking children's movie?  Jesus Christ.  And how is that a pacing flaw?  The entire movie moves quickly.

If he completely ignores the first and the x-men movies and just makes some random movie that happens to have Wolverine and not deal with the issues of being a sequel then maybe I can see Aronofsky pulling off something unique. But if its really Wolverine 2. As in a direct sequel to the first one? Then that is complete waste of his talents.

You've got to be shitting me. There's no way this turns into a good movie, especially if it's a random reboot.

Wolverine is my favorite comic hero, and has been since I was a little kid. And while a Wolverine movie could work, it won't in this current big budget non stop action environment.

The Secret of Kells

The story and characters are a bit thin here, but that's more than made up for the music and the overall look of the movie [which are both just absolutely astounding]. The way it looks and animated actually reminds me of something like Samurai Jack, but far less restrained and with more money to work with. It moves along at a nice pace, although the ending comes a bit too fast [could have used another 10 or 15 minutes, I think], but that's a minor gripe and really the only one that I could even think of leveling at it. The fusion of Irish mythology and religious undertones is great and allows the animators to do some great imagery, especially in the forest scenes where the movie truly shines [and in the Viking attack towards the end, which is far darker than any other part of the movie]. And you can't go wrong with a lots of Celtic music. It's nothing deep, but it is really, really good.

Hey, what if Darren Aronofsky isn't doing Wolverine at all, instead, he's tackling some other movie entirely that sounds almost too badical to be true.
Quote from: holy crap, really!  Wow, this is way better then Wolverine 2
The Tiger is an adaptation of John Vaillant's non-fiction book about a game warden who must protect a Siberian town when a tiger begins attacking its inhabitants, with Brad Pitt attached to star - but there's a bit more!

In a new interview with Guillermo Arriaga, who's adapting The Tiger for Aronofsky, the writer said that the film will shoot next year and that, apparently, Angelina Jolie will star along with her partner Brad Pitt. Huh? This is the first time we've ever heard it and considering how popular Jolie is, we usually know if she's interested in something, but I guess not. Arriaga also says he's traveling to New York a lot (where Aronofsky is based) and "would be doing a tour of Siberia to check locations" in November. So if we're to believe every word he says (and none of it was lost in translation), this may be the very next feature film for Aronofsky.

Hell, I could get financing to direct that movie with that lineup.  Forget for a moment that The Ghost and the Darkness isn't that great, this sounds just llike it but way better.  Give a cameo to Val Kilmer as tiger food, he could use the work.

The Social Network
Good movie.  I won't deny that.  But sweeping every major award?  Yeah, I don't think so.  It's thoroughly entertaining but defining movie of our generation?  No.  There's nothing particularly memorable about it.  There is no speech or lines of dialogue that are hard hitting enough to remember in a year, much less 10.  It'll get a few nods probably for the screenplay and directing, but it won't be sweeping shit.  I'll bet my balls on it.  And the screenplay that everyone on GAF is orgasming for is totally unremarkable in most ways.  Outside of a few select scenes (where it admittedly shines) it simply works.  Good movie though.

No one likes Aladdin anymore. The DVD sold so poorly they replaced it in the Diamond line with Fantasia/Fantasia 2000.

Beauty and the Beast is so superior to Aladdin it's not even funny. It's like comparing a classic Disney animated movie (Beauty) to a Saturday morning cartoon (Aladdin).

Huh? No it's true. Aladdin was the last animated movie Katzenberg was fully involved in there, as he didn't meddle much in Lion King at all.

After the success of Beauty & the Beast, he split the animators into two teams to work on two movies. One was Aladdin, which was pitched to him before Ashman died (the other was Lion King), but Katzenberg made MASSIVE changes to the original pitch in 1991 by adding in all the hip pop-culture stuff of the Genie, changing Iago from a stuffy Brit, etc. He said Ashman's original idea didn't "engage" and it had to be more hip to do so, which is why he had the duo who eventually wrote the Pirates trilogy to make all of the changes to the script. Due to all he wanted to change on Aladdin he was more involved with that one than Lion King. He trusted Lion King to the Beauty & the Beast directors to retool the story, which is why it's better.

After he was fired from Disney he went on to co-found Dreamworks and run the animation side of things which is why Dreamworks hasn't made a single CG movie that doesn't have hip pop-culture jokes through the whole thing. The ONLY animated movie Dreamworks did that was close to what Disney used to do was Prince of Egypt (and the Direct to Video sequel), and their hands were tied with that one due to the subject matter. It also helped that Prince was co-directed by Brenda Chapman who worked in the story departments for Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, and The Lion King and is currently directing Bear & the Bow (aka Brave) at Pixar.

Yea well at Dreamworks Katzenberg didn't have a Roy Disney to answer to. At Disney, during the time of Aladdin, it was Katzenberg, Schnieder, and Roy Disney in charge of the animation studio.

I'm shockingly with ManaByte on this one.  Katzenberg was one of the worst things to happen to Disney, especially once they started to really find success in the late 80s/early 90s.  I like Aladdin okay, but it certainly feels much more vacuous and along the lines of a Dreamworks film, which considering how the corporate structure is in the modern setting, makes perfect sense.

I also don't think Lion King is that great, either.  It's better than Aladdin though

Speaking of modern Disney, EVERY SINGLE PERSON who saw the work-in-progress Tangled says it's more along the lines of Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast than any recent animated movie. It really reminded some people of seeing Little Mermaid for the first time when they realized that Disney figured out how to make good movies again.

It's funny that they showed a work-in-progress version of Beauty and the Beast prior to release and people went crazy for it and the exact same thing is happening with Tangled.

I think Lasseter is going to grab an AK-47 and terminate the marketing department for their deceptive ads and trying to sell it as Shrek 5.

http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2010/09/twisted-postermarketing.html
Quote
The latest poster for Walt Disney Pictures' "Tangled" is out...

Memo To The Mouse: This. Is. Not. A. DreamWorks. Film.

As I've said before, I don't care too much for the marketing that is being done for this film. It's deceptive, it's manipulative and it bares very little resemblance to the actual film they're trying to promote. Let me be clear, I've not seen the film yet, but I've talked to several who have. I've had e-mail discussions with others and I've talked to a couple Bothans that worked on it. I've also seen the reactions from those that have been to the screenings too. And everything I get from that is a world away from what the marketing department has delivered.

I think the "Boy Factor" and the "Princess Factor" have been blown way out of proportion in their decision to portray this film as hip, edgy and something that boys will clamor to go see. In fact, I think the marketing department should be fired. They've done a horrible job promoting this film. Then again, look at the marketing job they've done for "Tron Legacy" and see the difference. It's pretty good, hmmm? Perhaps they've just forgotten how to publicize a Disney animated film?

Because from all I've been able to gather, this film resembles a cross between "The Little Mermaid" and "Sleeping Beauty," not "Shrek" or "The Road to El Dorado." I've heard testimonials from people that said this is a truly great animated film: hauntingly beautiful and filled with moments that will make you laugh and cry. From the beginning to the end it is every bit as worthy of the Disney Animation moniker as those classic films from the 50's to the 80's. Take my advise and don't let the trailers or posters keep you from seeing this. See it for yourself and judge it for yourself.

Let's just hope the marketing department hasn't forgotten how to promote "Winnie the Pooh" come this time next year...

I know, I know. We've all seen the trailers that are out there for "Tangled." But they don't do justice to this new animated feature. By playing up this motion picture's more contemporary sense of humor, rather than highlighting "Tangled" 's sincerity, this film's huge heart, stunning visuals and solid storytelling, Disney's doing a genuine disservice to this WDAS production. Making many would-be moviegoers think that "Tangled" is some sort of a Shrek-ified take on Rapunzel.

Which isn't what "Tangled" is at all. Truth be told, his new Walt Disney Animation Studios production doesn't have a cynical bone in its body. It entertains you from beginning to end strictly on the merits of its clever plot & engaging characters. Not to mention Alan Menken & Glenn Slater's terrific score.

That's what "Tangled" really does best. It takes something that you think you've seen before (i.e. the Disney animated fairy tale) and then turns it into something genuinely effective & entertaining for today's audiences. Which is why this movie is sure to connect with adults, kids & couples come November 24th. Which is when this new Walt Disney Animation Studios release finally bows in theaters.

So you might want to make some room on that shelf where you've been keeping your DVD versions of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast " and "Aladdin." Because next spring (when the Blu-ray of "Tangled" is finally available for purchase), you're definitely going to want to slot this hair ... er ... heir apparent to Disney's fairy tale crown right alongside those great animated features from the late 1980s / early 1990s.
