I thought Despicable Me looked alright. The type of movie I'd netflix when it's release and watch drunk or something when all I want is harmless cute fun far away from the doom and gloom that is adult life.

A Bug's Life isn't bad. Certainly no Cars or Shrek; it's just average. Up is definitely above average, though, so yeah that was a bad comparison. But Up really ain't high on my Pixar list.

1. Wall-E
2. Monsters Inc
3. Toy Story
4. Incredibles
5. Ratatouille
6. Finding Nemo
7. Up
8. A Bug's Life
100. Cars

Haven't seen Toy Story 2 or 3. Toy Story 3 just came out in retail so I plan on getting the whole trilogy soon.

You need an asterisk by Wall-E that you're only talking about the first half.

Second half is great but it does, once again, reinforce the conflict in Pixar's ideology. "Do we make a 'mature' animated feature film for the whole family or will we slowly turn it into a gaggle of laughs to pander to kids? Decisions decisions."

But alas, that is the the American animation industry in a nutshell; everything must be a comedy. Thank God I changed my profession of choice.

If Wall-E was like the entirety of the first half, about two robots in love on a desolate world devoid of human life, it would have been a masterpiece. Instead, it's flawed masterpiece.

What's the deal with Pixar's Cars? Everybody hates it. I don't care for it either, I just don't know why everyone agrees that it's the worst Pixar movie so far.

Despicable Me is an animation movie that's all out goofy and cutesy and doesn't try to be mature yet still has heart.  It's exactly what Dreamworks wishes it could be.

Pixar seems to intentionally try to make their movies appeal to adults in addition kids. They aren't just churning out kids fluff like dreamworks.

Not to say they aren't kids movies first and foremost. Because they definitely are. But they try to keep the grown ups entertained as much as possible. But that doesn't mean they aren't kids movies. Sesame Street puts tons of shit in there aimed at grownups, but it's still a show meant for preschoolers.

Just watched this on TBS. Was sort of captured from the get go. Not my thought (pulled from a review) but it goes from dark comedy to noir and both parts keep you watching. It gets pretty bleak at certain points but there's that sense of hope underlying the movie throughout. Also Connie Nielsen is abso-fuckinglutely-gorgeous. I also love Cusack in this, plays sort of the straight guy that has to do some fucked up things.

The poster makes it seem like a caper but its not, its more about following Cusack around after they've stolen the money and how it all goes from there in a small town (in Wichita, Kansas).

Watched Alien3 2003 special edition

better than the original of course... but still mostly hokey and lacks the scares of the first and the action of the second. it's got some great cinematography and character moments but overall kinda hum-drum.

then I watched the super long doc about it's sordid production. this was on the Quadrilogy dvd set but was actually cut quite a bit due to a lot of negative stuff said about Fox. Luckily the entire thing is intact in the bluray Anthology.

The doc is fascinating and really gives you an idea of why the movie ended up as it is. you see the challenges Fincher has to face and all that. really interesting stuff.

Robin Hood

This has a lot of good parts to it, like the acting [especially from Russel Crowe, Max von Sydow, and William Hurt], the battle scenes, and the look and feel of the sets and locations, but it just never really comes together to form a cohesive whole. The feel is one of realism and seriousness, but the villains are too cartoony, you almost expect them to appear twirling their moustaches [if they had any]. Too many plots threads aren't fleshed out [Robin's father and his charter, the Nottingham kids, Sir Godfrey's motivations, or Robin's true identity [somehow at the end everyone knows he's really Robin Longstride, but it's never explained how]. Most of the iconic Robin Hood characters barely make an appearance at all [the sherrif shows up in two short scenes, Friar Tuck talks to Robin Hood once in the whole movie, and Little John shows up a few times at the beginning and then disappears]. And the story? It ends right where it should have started. Who honestly wants to see "THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROBIN HOOD?", when it's basically some stardard-issue medieval knighthood story. They could have hacked off the last minute of the movie and given it a different name and nobody would have even known that it was supposed to be Robin Hood story. The movie just doesn't seem to have a point and I can't really recall what the movie was ABOUT. So, no rousing adventure, minimal banditry, and a distinct lack of merry men.

Basically, it isn't a BAD movie, but it's probably the worst Robin Hood movie made so far.

Burke and Hare

Enjoyable and quaint adventure somewhat spoiled by a tedious and by-the-numbers second half.

The first half of the film is often funny, providing some offbeat skits, inspired cameos and some wonderfully droll dialogue.

However the film trails off in the second half, is too busy tying up loose plot points, and sort of forgets the funny.

Disappointing. 6/10

Finally watched the Dark Knight.

It was good. Especially for the standards of comic book movies. The weak parts were the ending was a bit hokey imo. That whole boat thing was a bit hokey. And Good Lord Bale's Batman voice is fucking terrible. I didn't remember it being that bad in the first one and all the Batman spoofs had me prepared for the worst in that regard but it still knocks you on your ass. I'm just not a huge fan of him as Batman.

Fortunately most of the other stuff by comparison was quite good. The Joker in particular makes the film. I was ready to not like Heath Ledger's performance based on all the hype but it was very good. And his character pretty much makes the flick.

Will probably watch Watchmen next at some point.

Yup, good take on TDK. It's good, but some of the moral monologues take things into corny territory. And while the boat scene was tense the first time I saw it, it's almost laughable now.

And the end...yea. I like Gordon's little speech at the end, probably because I'm a nerd

There's a director's cut, but it's not really that awesome. It mainly just fleshes out some of the secondary plots, not like in Kingdom of Heaven where it was slashed by the studio to be something the director/writer didn't intend it to be.

The problem with Robin Hood is that nobody gives a damn about his origin, and for good reason. It just isn't that interesting, it isn't the Robin Hood we've come to expect - for all we care it could just be some dude. It's the prequel we never wanted for a film that we did.

Plus, origin stories in general are just crap.

Too bad, because Ridley Scott + Brian Helgeland shoulda been amazing.

I still wanna see Robin Hood because there's usually at least something in Ridley Scott films that makes it worth seeing.  It might not be amazing, but there's usually a couple of aspects of it that are really good.

That's what's really frustrating about Robin Hood, so much of the movie IS really good. But at the end you realize that the whole movie isn't about anything at all and the characters that you wanted to see barely appeared. It's slightly longish, but that wouldn't have been an issue if the story/characters were more engaging.

Like I said before, as a medieval knight movie it's okay [but generic], but as a Robin Hood movie it just completely fails.

The Damned United

I care very little about European soccer so I was rather surprised when a friend who hates soccer recommended me this movie.  I had only the vaguest notion of the story it was loosely based on but I decided to watch it anyway.  Turns out it is pretty fucking amazing.  Michael Sheen gives one of those performances that should wine Oscars if the academy wasn't so hung up on the fact that mental incompetency is a barrier to truly great roles.  It certainly helps that he is playing off actors that great in their right.  Loved it and can't suggest it highly enough.

Freudian slip there

yeah, The Damned United was great.  It was on Netflix instant stream a while back when I watched it and it might still be there.  Nicest thing I can say about Michael Sheen is that this movie made like him.  Well, I guess you can say that he did a good job of making me dislike him in Kingdom of Heaven.

The Chaser

Such an intense movie. The first thirty minutes so effectively build the intensity from one scene to the next and then carefully deflates it all with some dark comedy that seems to come from nowhere. Then you're left wondering where the movie can possibly go from there, an hour and half are left in the runtime but it almost feels like the movie is nearly over. And this is where the movie gets really good. It starts to build the intensity again, slowly at first, but then faster and faster. This is a really great movie and one of the best Korean movies I've seen, it manages to avoid a lot of the melodrama that more Korean movies seem to have and, even at a full 2 hours, it never feels like it overstays its welcome.

Uwe doing this one, too?

How are they still making Bloodrayne movies when Majesco can't even manage to trot out a game for it?

Yep, it's Uwe Boll back for more.

I still kind of freaks me out that the original Bloodrayne movie had Michael Madsen, Meat Loaf, Billy Zane, and Ben Kingsley. The third one has nobody though.
