Batman Returns is just a mediocre Tim Burton movie.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
But then you ask, perplexed, aren't all Tim Burton movies mediocre?

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS TO BE SPIELBERG'S LINCOLN

http://www.deadline.com/2010/11/daniel-day-lewis-to-star-in-lincoln-for-director-steven-spielberg-and-dreamworks/
Quote
Los Angeles, CA (November 19, 2010) – Two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis will star as the 16th President of the United States in DreamWorks Studios’ Lincoln to be directed by Steven Spielberg.  The announcement was made today by Spielberg and Stacey Snider, Co-Chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios.

"Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with Lincoln,” said Steven Spielberg.  "Throughout his career, he has been exceptionally selective in his choice of material," added Stacey Snider, "which makes us feel even more fortunate that he has chosen to join with us for Lincoln."

Based on the best-selling book, Team of Rivals, by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the screenplay has been written by the Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award winner, and Academy Award nominated writer Tony Kushner.  It will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg.

It is anticipated that the film will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.

Doris Kearns Goodwin won her Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time, the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the home front in World War II.  Kushner's prize was for his play Angels in America, which later became an Emmy Award-winning television special.  He had previously worked with Spielberg on Munich for which he was nominated for an Oscar in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.

Robopocalypse was supposed to start shooting Jan 2012. How is this going to work? Even for Spielberg's packed schedules that still seems impossible to go from fall shoot of one movie to Jan. shoot of another.

You obviously have no fucking clue how Spielberg works.

He does this all the time. He films one small movie with minimal effects, and then goes directly into a massive effects movie. Sometimes he films the non-effects stuff on the effect heavy movie first and then does the smaller movie and sometimes it's the other way around. Lincoln/Robopocalypse is not the first time he's done this.

This is how he did Jurassic Park/Schindler's List, Catch Me if You Can/Minority Report, Munich/War of the Worlds, and TinTin/War Horse.

In all those cases (and for tintin/war horse there was year between production) he did the effects heavy one first because he could go off and film the smaller drama film during the massive post-production it takes on those type of movies. Like on Jurassic Park George Lucas acted as director for a lot of the post-production and cgi work on that movie while Spielberg was running around filming Schindler's List. Robopocalypse is a heavy cgi film and will require massive pre-production. This is the first time he is going from smaller to bigger film. Fall start to Jan start of a cgi heavy movie is a massive squeeze, even by Spielberg standards. I bet assuming Lincoln goes ahead as planned Robopocalypse will not shoot in Jan 2012 but be pushed back a bit.

Robopocalypse may not be set in stone anymore.

Originally the Deadline scoop said Spielberg committed to it as his next movie.

But now there's a fucking press release that obviously shows his next movie will be Lincoln. So until there's an official press release and green light for Robopocalypse; I wouldn't be basing any schedule on it.

Which is why I posted asking what is going on with Robopocalypse when dreamworks put out a press release saying Spielberg was going to shoot it in Jan 2012 for a Summer 2013 release a few months ago. That was my point.

Jeeeeeez. You get way too bent out of shape over this stuff.

Batman Returns? We're talking about the one with penguins that have rocket launchers strapped to their backs? You guys are smoking some strong stuff.
I haven't smoked any stuff of any type of strength today and I think the burton ones are the best by far.  They were purposely demented and had by far the best villains (which is the only reason to care about batman anyways).  The Nolan movies just feel tired and immature in how they try to give a realistic take on batman, Burton at least has the imagination to use the license for something interesting imo.

I'll level with you, Tim Burton's first Batman isn't a bad movie. It's aged quite a bit, but it's not bad by any stretch. But Returns? Returns is to Batman what Batman & Robin is to Batman Forever.

Okay, so Returns is to Batman what what Batman & Robin is to Batman Forever.

Batman & Robin and Batman Forever are about equal in shittiness.  It'd take a scientific analysis to really figure out which is shittier.  And Batman, by your own words isn't a bad movie, so Batman Returns would be on the same level as Batman and isn't a bad movie.  Gotcha.

I dunno.  I think it's awesome because it knows what it's doing.  I mean, you first post about it said it all.  Penguins with rockets strapped to them.  It also always seemed to fit more with the Batman I was familiar with and grew up with as opposed to emo and angry Batman that makes me roll my eyes when he tries to say something deep.  Don't get me wrong, TDK is very enjoyable and well done but I think its failures far outweigh its successes to call it a good movie.  Begins is just pure shit.

My introduction to Batman was TAS and Frank Miller's Year One and DKR, so I'm more comfortable with the darker side of the fiction.

Clash of the Titans [2010]

Another visually immaculate, big-budget Hollywood movie. And, as with most, it swaps fun and adventure for grimdark serious business and non-stop action. There's honestly not much to talk about here. The movie is hollow, boring, and ultimately pointless. The original was a really fun, sometimes really goofy, adventure movie that had no pretensions of being anything different. The remake wants you to take it seriously, tries DESPERATELY to want you to take it seriously. But you just can't.

2010 has been an absolutely ABYSMAL year for big-budget movies.

Not knowing what it was, and thinking it was a BBC production, I rented the recent re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland, the live-action made-for-SyFy miniseries, Alice, featuring Kathy Bates and Tim Curry.

Alice is a Judo-sensei. The story's McGuffin is a ring called "The Stone of Wonderland" which powers the Looking Glass. Not much more can be said. It honestly feels like a roleplaying environment I might have game-mastered in college. Good performances unfortunately shot through by a premise which hasn't been very well considered.

People are hyping this as being on par with Beauty and the Beast. Are those Disney classics on netflix? Hmm, I haven't seen them since I was a kid. So whenever I say I prefer Little Mermaid, Lion King and Aladdin over Beauty and the Beast, that's the 9 year old me saying that. I wonder how I'd feel about them now.

My favorite Disney animated features as kid were those four, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, 101 Dalmation, and especially - ESPECIALLY - the Lady and the Tramp.

Oh wow. I'm gonna watch them tonight. What about pre-TLM Disney?

Most of the older Disney movies are on there, yeah.

I've never seen the original Aladdin. I've only seen the direct-to-video sequel, Aladdin and The King of Thieves.

I watched Kind Hearts and Coronets this evening. It's 1949 black comedy about a duke who murders his relatives so he can skip them in order of succession and for revenge. Entertaining and dark for a film from that era.
