Haha, don't get me wrong, I fucking love John K. It's just with his HB cartoons, I think he could've made it his without exceeding the maturity of the original cartoons, just like On The Rocks.

Was kind of cool after New Vegas and Assassin's Creed Bro both dealing with the Roman empire a bit.  Only watched it because it was Neil Marshall and I could stream it.  Was fine.  It was entertaining, the main guy was like a better sam worthington, the cinematography was nice.  Probably the best part was Marshall bringing in his horror movie bloodiness to a non-horror film.  Very bloody fun.  Some good action scenes.  But in the end it was kind of forgettable popcorn movie.  It's probably a little better than Doomsday and very much not as good as The Descent or Dog Soldiers.  But if you like Marshall or have a passing interest in a movie about Rome vs. England it's worth a watch.

Planning on streaming The Girl Who Played With Fire next :)

Thin Red Line is very good, but kind of long and meandering at times. Days of Heaven and Badlands are both untouchably wonderful.

i liked malick more before his characters simply became archetypes and gluttons for contemplation. i'm ready to be fuzzy headed for a few theater hours however with lubezki and malick in a 50's milieu.
days, thin red line, and the new world are all moving at points though interchangeably ranked behind badlands for me.

Watched Zombieland tonight.

It was okay. I think I thought it was going to be better since I had heard good things about it and I have a zombie fetish. I liked the first half but I liked the second half less. I don't know. It became a bit too traditional for my tastes in the second half but that's just probably a personal taste thing.

Woody Harrelson was surprisingly good in it though.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Its easy to see why this movie didn't do so well. Michael Cera making out is disgusting.

Besides that

Although I understand they had to pace the movie to get through the entirety of the source material, the timing of the dialogue feels as fast as one would expect from a 23 minute tv show.  Its also sad to see many segments of the original graphic novels omitted, although I understand it was for cutting down the length of a feature film.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nevertheless, I think the impact of Scott realising he was so much like Gideon was lost in the movie.  There was something awesome about Scott gaining the POWER OF UNDERSTANDING at that point in the graphic novels and wanting to kill Gideon for resembling Scott's selfish posessive behavior. What they go with resembles that but, eh
[close]

Casting is good, music is good, the constant game references are a little corny although that comes with source material. Michael Cera did a pretty good job methinks.  I liked it but would probably never recommend it.

new on Netflix, boring most of the time like the real thing, which makes sense because it is a documentary, ends in a cliffhanger because  you thought that Junger was just an author so this must be his last work that he hadnt been able to edit into a book yet because he died while filming it, and the family wanted his last effort to be shared posthumously. usually assuming things turns other things into asses and people, but with this it turned all of the boring parts into still boring but slightly suspenseful parts because you are waiting for the cameraman to get gatted

overall an fascinating window into a warrior world/Blackhawk Down

I put on Irréversible for the first time last night, gearing up for Enter the Void, and because I only just learned a few days ago that Thomas Bangalter composed the soundtrack.  I knew what to expect, but I didn't think it would be quite what people have made out to be.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was wrong.  Not only is the infamous rape scene itself as disturbing as commonly described, but because of the reversed timeline, the build up to it couldn't be more strategically effective: the viewer is first exposed to a merciless act of vengeance and later, the brutality of her assailant, justifying the seemingly cruel revenge only after it's occured, all the while the camera is whirling about incomprehensibly, mirroring something like a delirious rage, becoming calmer and more steady as the timeline rolls back closer to the act -- exactly opposite the viewer's degree of understanding regarding the situation -- until the camera sits absolutely stationary, fixed on the rape as it goes on for what feels like forever.

It's worth seeing once.  There isn't much at all in the way of plot, but as a visceral experience, it's pretty fucking powerful.  I won't be watching it again.

Aren't all movies a piece of art by the creators?  The movie is what it is imo.

Lots. Here's a summary of some it from Wiki:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Since the release of the film Exit Through The Gift Shop, the purported documentary directed by Banksy, there has been much speculation that the film and story of Mr. Brainwash are a hoax concocted by Banksy himself. Among the most questionable aspects of his character in the film is the absence of any footage of Guetta creating his uncannily Banksy-like images. When he is shown "working," he is only seen splattering paint using aerosol cans to haphazardly color images and clumsily attempting to paste up a poster. Other aspects of the Mr. Brainwash character seem deliberately comical, such as his being pushed in a wheelbarrow after supposedly breaking his foot.

The quotes below typify the speculation for and against the idea of the film and Mr. Brainwash himself being a hoax:

"Is Banksy’s ‘Exit Through the Giftshop’ a hoax too far?" - the Times Online [8]

The whole thing, it's clear now, was an intricate prank being pulled on all of us by Banksy, who has never publicly revealed his identity, with Fairey as his accomplice. - Alissa Walker [9]

The low evidence of sales on artnet.com also supports the argument that the art world hasn’t really been as exploited by media-hype as the film suggests. With both shows held outside of commercial galleries, no professional dealers have had their reputation on the line in making fake claims of high sales. However, if Guetta is a hoax, there also exists the possibility that these artworks are actually produced by Banksy himself, in a style deliberately intended to suggest inferior artistic skill. [10]

As the movie opened in the USA, in April 2010, The Boston Globe movie reviewer Ty Burr found it to be quite entertaining as a farce and awarded it four stars. He dismissed the notion of the film being a "put on" saying "I’m not buying it; for one thing, this story’s too good, too weirdly rich, to be made up. For another, the movie’s gently amused scorn lands on everyone."[11]

It has also been speculated that Banksy simply was able to document the exploitation of the art world, after endorsing MBW's first solo show. While many people believe in a conspiracy regarding the success of MBW as an artist, this theory holds to the idea that markets can be exploited through branding and brand association in any industry.

Scarface, yeah after all this time. Thought the movie went on for FAR FAR FAR too long, and didn't really like Tony as a lead (though Pacino was great in the role). Liked the beginning, the political/historical bit with the whole Cuban refugees coming to Miami, and the effects on the populace. The slight incest subplot at the way end of the movie was kinda pointless, as were some other elements that weren't explored too well. The soundtrack was of course amazing though. :bow :bow :bow Giorgio Moroder :bow2 :bow2 :bow2

Also saw My Neighbor Totoro. Was cute, but also another slowpaced movie. Some absolutely beautiful hand drawn environments though, I loved the use of color. If I saw this when it came out I'd probably have much more love for it, but Mononoke will still always be my favorite Miyazaki film.

And finally, Tron Legacy. Another movie with some long-winded dialogue/expository scenes, that don't really explain much after all that boring back-and-forth. But I liked the movie, even the more "cinematic" DP songs sounded good to me, even though the best part was of course the club scene. :bow DP cameo and Derezzed :bow2

It's one of the best Dreamworks movies so far, but it was held back just a bit by how horribly clichéd the story ended up being. It was basically a copy/pasta of last year's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Well, that and Dreamworks' trademarked "trying too hard to be funny" brand of humor, which got to be a bit too much in a few places, although this was less of an issue than the story. Still a good movie though, just not quite great.

The Expendables

Surprisingly boring  :-\

I kept wondering "when does this get entertaining?" because Rambo at least had the cool shoot out near the end.  The expendables never went anywhere and it was about this old guy that doesn't do anything cool in the movie.  Statham's was the second focus and he was just as bland, only occasionally doing cool things with knives.  No one else seemed into it and they were just there for the action scenes, which were all-around pretty weak.  Jet Li did kung fu shit, just not nearly as cool as he does in his own movies and watered down.  Couture did some MMA things, just watered down.  Terry Crews did some Terry Crews stuff, again watered down.  Steve Austin came off like a white supremacist.  Even Eric Roberts was just like the skim milk version of the smarmy characters he played before, like Maroni from TDK.

Undisputed 3 is the real fucking awesome action movie of 2010.  Scott Atkins :bow2 stereotypes :bow2 awesome dialog that isn't just talking about the actor's ear or height :bow2

it really annoys me how there aren't any Dracula movies in the works, and that there weren't any for a while. Christian Bale as Dracula with a competent director and a good writer would be orgasmic for me.

Dario Argento is doing Dracula 3D, but who knows if that'll actually be any good.

Watched Despicable Me the other day.  I was surprised that I actually enjoyed it.  Well balance of decent story and funny jokes.

having watched most of his output for the past 20 years, the answer is no.  it will not be good and will retroactively make his classic catalog somewhat worse.

I'm currently watching Iron-Fisted Monk because Sammo Hung is an inspiring fat man but I had no idea the film was this rape-y.

HBO has been showing Fantastic Mr. Fox a lot lately for the holidays... man, I forgot how much I loved this movie.

Do you mean a vampire movie or a movie about the actual prince Dracula?  I hate Bale so maybe he would fit as a sadistic tyrant but I could never see him as a vampire.

Watched The Human Centipede with the fam after Christmas dinner.  Mom would not shut up about how fallacious it all was.  Quite terrible.

But it's 100% medically accurate!
