Yeah, she's gone from MILF to GILF

The colors are more subdued in the screen, the image that's in my head is of a very purple and flamboyant Johnny Depp.

She looks about the same as she did in Stardust, just a bit older. That's the most recent movie I've seen her in.

I can't believe this movie is real.

I can't believe the entire conceit is real.

For centuries, doctors had been treating women for a wide variety of illnesses by performing what is now recognized as masturbation. The "pelvic massage" was especially common in the treatment of female hysteria during the Victorian Era, as the point of such manipulation was to cause "hysterical paroxysm" (orgasm) in the patient. However, not only did they regard the "vulvular stimulation" required as having nothing to do with sex, but reportedly found it time-consuming and hard work.

One of the first vibrators was a steam-powered device called the "Manipulator", which was created by American physician George Taylor, M.D. This machine was a rather awkward device, but was still heralded as some relief for the doctors who found themselves suffering from fatigued wrists and hands. Circa 1880, Dr. Joseph Mortimer Granville patented the first electromechanical vibrator, then, in 1902, the American company Hamilton Beach patented the first electric vibrator available for retail sale, making the vibrator the fifth domestic appliance to be electrified, after the sewing machine, fan, tea kettle, and toaster, and about a decade before the vacuum cleaner and electric iron.

Stake Land - Zombieland sans the humor or humanity.  I liked the thought of the picaresque through the land, but it just didn't grab me.

Thor - a lot better than I thought it was going to be.  The Asgard stuff was top notch.

"It all makes sense in context."  Is what you might say after the final moments of Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame come to a close.  Because it really does, but a big part of why this film is so delightful is because of its frequent weird left turns it takes in plotting, in events, hell, even in costume and simple production design.  There's not too much characterization, but with a plot this dense, and with so many setpieces, and time devoted to magical talking deer, there's understandably less time to focus on the 'who' when the 'why' takes so much time to unpack.

The film is a mystery with a plot that's every bit as complicated as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but tells it just as well as that Swedish movie but with a far greater emphasis on spectacle and assorted WTF-ery.  On the eve of the first female emperor of China's ascendance to the throne, there's the nettlesome problem of some of her top vassals spontaneously combusting (yes, really), the to-be-emperor, at the behest of her most trusted advisor, a magical talking deer (yes, really), releases the nation's finest detective from his eight year prison stretch to unmask the criminals.  And if you think I gave away too much, don't worry, that's just the first half-hour.  It would be a conventional story of palace intrigue with occasional butt whoppings were it not for the diversions into tangents that only seem very strange before receiving some pseudo reasonable explanation later on.

Since much of the fun of this movie is in the oddness of its plot points, it'd be unfair to reveal any more of them.  I can say that there's an awful lot of well staged action scenes, beautiful production design, great special effects, and shocking and unguessable plot twists, its fun for and despite its oddities.  The film even manages to make the requisite pro-China message that all mainstream Chinese films have seem organic, now that's an achievement.  Despite all the weirdness its a classical styled mystery/adventure/blockbuster film, not unlike the Robert Downy Jr. starring Sherlock Holmes.  I'd take this film over that every day of the week and twice on Sunday, as the saying goes.

4.5/5

tl;dr -Tsui Hark is back, with an audacious yet conventional and fully entertaining movie.

Indomina is handling the distribution, they're a new company, but their previously released Bodyguards and Assassins (which is pretty good btw) is on Netflix now and their recent blu/dvd release True Legend (ain't seen yet, but I'm hyped) is slated for an eventual streaming date a few months from now.

so yes, it will more then likely show up on Netflix streaming.  But if you're lucky enough to live in a city that shows it in a theater I'd recommend that.  Andy Lau's fantastic mustache deserves a big screen viewing.

I love Superbad so expected to like this.  But no.  I found it really dull and only got through about half an hour.  Must be the different writers and maybe the lack of interesting characters in comparison to Superbad.

Really? Its one of my favorite 09 movies and is an awesome coming of age flick.

Yeah it's really nice. It's really laid back.

The Lion King
I hadn't seen this movie in ages.  Man!  Fucking awesome movie.  The first thing that I noticed was that black voice actors don't have to sound sassy and hip-hopish.  It was even more apparently because the commercial for Happy Feet Two came on right before the movie and the black voice acting and slang made me cringe.  The animation is gorgeous and the songs are fun.  The characters are entertaining but they're not so stupid that as an adult I'm wondering what the fuck is wrong with kids.  "What do you want me to do?  Dress in drag and do the hula?"  That shit is funny even for adults.  "Are you achin'?  Yup yup yup.  For some bacon?  Yup yup yup.  He's a big pig.  Yup yup.  You can be a big pig too!  Woo!"  Sorry.  Incredible fucking animation movie.  I know it's not exactly a debate but I had to share how much I loved it still.

Crazy stupid love
Surprisingly entertaining.  Has some horrible rom com tropes but the humor was decent enough to overcome the eyerolling moments.

tl;dr re: Lion King. Movie is too wafer thin, even for a kids film. Songs blow dick also. Beauty and the Beast is way better.

Yeah, sadly true; Carpenter's genius will probably be recognized fully only after he has passed from this earth.

13 Assassins

I actively dislike Miike films for their tasteless violence gross outs.  But when he does something more restrained like this (well outside the no arm/no leg naked girl), it's very enjoyable as he is a pretty good director.  Nice cinematography and great performances all around.  Kind of a traditional samurai-ish film, but very enjoyable.  The villain was pretty awesome in a "this guy is straight out of a jrpg" way, lol.

hey, did you guys hate Legion, Firewall, and Priest, so did Paul Bettany.

Quote from: Mr. Jennifer Connelly
“I’ve made some bad movies, but some of those bad movies have been other people’s dreams, so it would be sort of inelegant to tread on all that. I’ve made movies because I’ve thought, ‘God, I really want my kids to have a house in the country.’ ... “I think it might mean no more action films! I mean, I love action movies, I love all sorts of movies, but there are just too many of the fuckers and too few movies for grownups. Action movies are incredibly vain. You get all fit and feel more stupid with every push-up.”

in the same interview he also says Lars Von Trier is kind of a dick, to the surprise of no one.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

I remember someone on here recommended this a while back and I checked out the trailer at the time and it looked hilarious.  Then I forgot about it until I saw they were releasing it in theaters this week so I watched it.

The first half was really fucking funny if you've grown up on horror films.  It's totally ridiculous in a good way.  After a while the one note-ness of the film kind of plays out, but the movie stays good for the rest, with moments of lolllllll.  Was a good watch.

Went and saw a matinee of Drive

Lived up to the hype.  Gorgeously shot, with a solid script and mainly good performances (Hendrickson was terrrrrrible and Perlman was hamming it up too much and was silly).  Loved the music choices and direction.  The tonal shift toward the middle was a bit jarring at first and I think I'd appreciate it better on 2nd viewing.  The scene in the elevator...holy crap that was good.  Will be interesting to see if this gets a best picture nom.

Also it always makes me a little sappy seeing a movie with Carrie Mulligan in it since I once dated a girl for a bit who had THE EXACT SAME face/body (kind of a super cute loli face) and Mulligan reminds me of her.

Decent, but seems like one of those "hard to hate even though it's not all that great so it gets near 100% on RT" films.  Brad Pitt did a really good job and about 70% of the dialogues had that great Sorkin scripting where words rolled at a fast and smart rhythm.  Otoh, the directing was a bore.  Very stiff, pacing all over the place (lots of lulls; felt like a 2:30+ hour movie despite being 2 hours) and the non-dialogue aspects of the script (aka, the story) were pretty janky.  Pitt kept it entertaining when it could've been otherwise a bore, but ehh, was hoping for a better film.  Would've liked to have seen a better director do this.
