Azumi is a fun B-level sword girl period piece story.  It plays the traditional samurai epic card with nods to all the greats while being a little cheezy.  The action direction is nice (same choreographer as Versus IIRC) and it stars Hideo Kojima for about 5 seconds as an extra :P

I thought Kitamura was an up and coming guy after he made Versus and Azumi.  Then he made a whooooole ton of crap and then moved to American film making and I don't think he's done anything since MMT.

Drive: Slow and quiet, then loud and obnoxious.

Killer Elite: Stathem/ Deniro bad choice cause they both can't act the part of two merc's in the 80's. Highly unbelievable even for a "true story"

Real Steel: Better than all three transformer movies and somehow they fuck it up with chick from Lost.

Courageous: Far better than Fireproof and can get you laid pretty easily cause of the non sexualized tension created because its a christian movie.

50/50: Good

Whats your number: Funny but I'm over Anna Ferris and Captain America is in too many movie this year.

Damn sprint for selling movie tickets for so cheap and then not knowing they would expire so shortly after purchasing. I've had to go to 3 double showings in the past 4 weekends just to make sure I use my tickets.

I saw Human Centipede II was out so I went to wiki and...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Human_Centipede_2_%28Full_Sequence%29

... :lol :lol are they for real with this shit? I know this movie is super low-budget so it's not like they really wasted much money on it, but still you think someone at IFC would have taken a look at it and been like "Hmmm...you know there are probably plenty of actual movies would could pick up and distribute instead...let's look around a little more, okay guys?"

The film opens with the final credits of The Human Centipede (First Sequence), including the closing credits. The camera pulls back, to reveal that this is playing on a portable DVD player, and a man in a toll booth in a parking garage is watching the film. Martin Lomax (Laurence R. Harvey) is an asthmatic, overweight, mentally ill, middle-aged, short British man. He lives in a small flat with his emotionally abusive mother (Vivien Bridson) while working as a security guard in an underground parking garage. His neighbors play punk music at high levels all night and day, and Martin often spies on the rich individuals who use the parking garage. Dr. Sebring (Bill Hutchens) suspects that Martin was sexually abused repeatedly by his father, now in prison (a suspicion confirmed when Martin has a flashback to this abuse, in which the audience hears the father raping his son).

In a metanarrative device, Martin is obsessed with The Human Centipede (First Sequence), watching it repeatedly at home and in his toll booth. At one point, he is depicted masturbating to the film with sandpaper wrapped around his penis. He keeps a centipede as a pet, and maintains a scrapbook on the film. When his mother (Vivien Bridson) destroys the scrapbook, Martin crushes her skull and then props her dead body up at the kitchen table. Martin wordlessly decides to recreate the fictional experiment he saw portrayed in The Human Centipede (First Sequence). Medically untrained, he assembles a potpourri of kitchen gadgets, woodworking tools, and assorted household items, puts them in a suitcase, and secures a dingy, dirty, dark abandoned warehouse to recreate the film's medical experiment. But Martin intends to create not just a three-person centipede, but the "full sequence" of 12 connected people.

He telephones the three actors from the first film, pretending to be Quentin Tarantino's casting agent, and tries to lure them to London. Only one, Ashlynn Yennie (portraying herself, in yet another nod to the meta-narrative), does so. Most of the first hour of the film shows how Lomax attacks, beats, and kidnaps his victims. Among his victims are a neighbor, a rental agent, and a man and his very pregnant wife. Once Lomax has his victims, he severs the tendons in each person's legs (graphically and on screen) to prevent them from fleeing. He uses a hammer to knock out their teeth one by one, putting his fingers in their blood-filled mouths to fish out their teeth so they will not swallow and choke on them in a suicide attempt. He slices open the buttocks of 11 of the victims (graphically depicted on screen), and then—lacking any surgical equipment—uses a staple gun to attach each person's face to the next person's anus. Lomax chooses Yennie to be the front of the "human centipede," so she does not have to eat anyone else's feces. When one of his victims dies from their wounds, Lomax sobs softly.

Lomax, who is clad only in his underwear throughout much of the latter portion of the film, becomes more and more sexually aroused by the desperation and travails of his "human centipede." He administers an excessive amount of laxative to his creation, forcing each individual in the chain to explosively evacuate their bowels into the mouth of the person behind them. When one of his victims chokes to death on their own vomit, Lomax again breaks down in tears.

Unbeknownst to Lomax, the pregnant woman—whom he believed had died—regains consciousness under a tarp next to another dead body. She bursts out of the tarp and runs outside, screaming, and leaps into her car and drives off. Lomax chases after her and throws himself against the car's windows, unable to get in. At the same time, the pregnant woman goes into labor and births a child into the foot well. Immediately after, the engine turns over and she stomps on the accelerator, smashing her newborn's skull in the process. Lomax is shown crying in rage.

The film ends with a plot twist showing that Lomax is still watching the DVD of the original film at work and the events of the film were merely a dream. One reviewer has noted that this conclusion is open to interpretation. It may be that Human Centipede (Full Sequence) was merely a dream, or it may be that Lomax has returned to his job and is now planning further crimes.

I watched The Girl Who Played With Fire last night. She got shot three times at close range, then was buried alive, but somehow didn't suffocate and managed to dig her way out with a cigarette case after six hours underground. wtf?

First one is pretty sweet though, looking forward to the remake.

American Werewolf in London is really to the point.  Even the ending is abrupt.  I like it for that.  Although you have to wonder why they just didn't nix the first wolfman a long time ago.  Unless the moors just randomly curse people.

I hope to god we get good Frankenstein, Dracula and Wolfman movies this decade. They are sorely missed.

I doubt they'll make another Wolfman movie anytime soon, considering how badly the one last year flopped. A Dracula movie is probably a good bet though, given America's current obsession with vampires. But will it be good? Ehhhh...

Tron: Legacy had me cringing all the 2 hours I just forcefed myself through.  Just... a bad script.  It was sad hearing Jeff Bridges say such corny nonsense so often.  Multiple contrived plot devices ('the disc is a key for some reason!', 'oh hey btw thats tron gosh').  I would argue the special effects weren't even that impressive 50 percent of the time.  In fact most of the costumework was cheap looking tubepipe nonsense.

Rare Exports - I was hoping for something different. It was more of an Evil Santa kids' movie only with some swearing, little gore, and a bunch of naked old dudes. It's ok for a one time watch, but it keeps teasing that something potentially awesome is going to happen but never fulfils on it. The twist ending was certainly unexpected though.

X-Men: First Class

Probably the best super-hero movies I've seen since The Dark Knight. I like that instead of just being "here's about of fast-edit action scenes and explosions" it actually works towards having an emotional core, and the way its tied into to real events and real people gives it a sort of weight that most action movies just don't have. Great acting from the three leads [McAvoy, Fassbender, and Bacon] goes a long way as well, though I kind of wished they'd developed Shaw a bit more. It seemed like there were some aspects of his character that were missing. Still, kind of a minor complaint and he was suitably evil for what his role called for. My biggest problem is that, at times, it feels like the were writers were going through the X-Men universe checklist and just checking boxes. I know it's an origin movie, but that's kind of the point. It's an origin movie and all that entails. It just felt like they were going a bit too far at times and digging out too many of those "Hey, ever wonder how X happened? Well, here you go!" moments. Too much getting out the board, setting up the pieces, and reading through the rules, not quite enough actual payoff. Gives it a bit of ding, but doesn't stop it from being a good movie.

Inside Job

Great stuff. One of the most appalling things to me was like apparently top grade universities don't require their staff to tell who payed them for what research etc.

Great shot of the Harvard dude choking when the interviewer asked him "So you don't think there is a conflict of interest when a doctor on the payroll of a medical company would write an academic paper claiming their medicine is the best?". Dude didn't know how to come back from that. Brilliant.

King of Kong almost too perfectly fits a good narrative.  They monkeyed (lol) with the timeline a bit to that end, but as far as character depictions go, according the director, it's the opposite of what you might initially assume:

Quote from: Seth Gordon
It is such a complicated conversation. The way we painted Billy and his actions is so much gentler that we could have, that it makes it hard for me to stomach the tiny little details that they are choosing to fight about, because his true actions were so ugly that we couldn't use the complete truth, meaning we didn't show him as dark as he really is. To have them take issue with these tiny, tiny little things makes me want to unveil the darker stuff, because it would silence them forever. But it is not worth my time. I don't think it is worth the kind of bad blood that could bring to start really opening Pandora's box. I could tell you off the record some of this stuff, but the dude is so much worse than we painted him out to be. So we just included the stuff in the movie that was necessary to tell the story and to understand Steve's fear of him and his reputation, but we didn't go into any of the stuff.

Scream
Man, such a fun movie.  Even if some aspects are a little dated, it's still so good.  It's funny right on cue (and not awkwardly so like Scre4m) and serious when it needs to be.  But it always has a lighthearted tone.  It stays in that grey area and never gets too silly or too serious.  I thought maybe my teenage self was just stupid when I loved Scream, but it's clear that Wes Craven has just lost it in the last 10-15 years.  So sad.

It's a classic. Maybe the last truly great slasher. The self referential humour that is found in it is still fresh at that time, and has now been done to death.

I sort of feel like they won't spend 1/2 the movie on how they came together, doubt they'll mention much background other than probably a few clunky didactic lines explaining who they are.

So hopefully the movie is about them dealing with each other rather than getting bogged down on explaining in unnecessary detail how each of them are dominos that have to fall into place to come together for this team to form.

Shit looked hot though

Fun fact: I've never seen this movie before. It was a gross oversight on my part because Eddie Murphy is ace, the soundtrack is fantastic, and it just oozes that great 80's style from every pore. The main plot is a little thing, but who cares? It's a fun and funny movie that'll still be entertaining in another 27 years.

Wow that Avengers trailer was boring. I don't get it, how does anyone actually like these most-Iron Man 1 Marvel Studio movies?
They feel so churned out and cookie cutter, even by summer blockbuster standards.

What was so exciting about comic book heroes becoming movies like the original Superman movie and '89 Batman (before it aged badly obviously) was that it took these characters and made them into films that felt like real films.

This Marvel Studio nonsense feels nothing more like random episodes of some saturday morning cartoon just with live action actors.

It's not like the original Superman has aged well either, Otis.

People are incapable of just NOT SEEING these big tentpole movies, it seems. Like they can't just spend 2 mins browsing on Netflix for something they like better.

Beverly Hills Cop

Fun fact: I've never seen this movie before. It was a gross oversight on my part because Eddie Murphy is ace, the soundtrack is fantastic, and it just oozes that great 80's style from every pore. The main plot is a little thing, but who cares? It's a fun and funny movie that'll still be entertaining in another 27 years.

Just, you know, never EVER watch the sequel(s).

Grave Encounters

another entry in the "found footage" genre. it's about a fictional group of paranormal investigators and their investigation of a haunted insane asylum. IMO when the atmosphere is built up well enough, "found footage" is probably one of my favorite current ways of displaying horror. i enjoy the tight viewing angles and night vision. I would say this movie isn't really a high water mark for the genre but it's OK, especially when stuff actually starts happening. the first 45 minutes were a bit annoying due to a caste of completely unlikable characters. however when stuff did start happening I was enjoying it quite a bit. there's a really great sound layer over everything with heavy bass, faint voices, things clanking, etc. it gives everything a super tense and claustrophobic feel because it's always as if something is right there with you and you're never safe. that really helps with the first person shooting style IMO.

So yeah from that point on it's pretty cool. i appreciated the reliance on sound over anything else but there are a few blatant visual scares with "ghost monsters" (best way I can describe them).

would say it's definitely worth the watch for fans of the genre.
