Beverly Hills Cop

Fun fact: I've never seen this movie before. It was a gross oversight on my part because Eddie Murphy is ace, the soundtrack is fantastic, and it just oozes that great 80's style from every pore. The main plot is a little thing, but who cares? It's a fun and funny movie that'll still be entertaining in another 27 years.

Just, you know, never EVER watch the sequel(s).

I thought 2 was funny although I probably havn't seen it since I was a kid. The third is shit though. And another 48 hours is maybe one of the worst sequels ever to a great first movie.

The Karate Kid [1984, natch]

Would you imagine that I've never seen this before either? It's true. However, it's so ingrained in my pop-culture psyche that I feel like I've seen it a hundred times before and it's probably true that I've seen bits of it on TV before. Still, first time all the way through. I enjoyed it. It's a slight movie and it doesn't exactly set it to break any ground, but it's fun. Pat Morita is awesome and Ralph Machio is likeable, with the bad guys as suitably villainous and Elisabeth Shue is the perfect teen dream [even though she was 21 when the movie came out]. The fights? Eh, not really important. Here's what's REALLY important:

I watched Batman Forever at my son's request.

He likes Batman, so do I. Joel "bathe me in neon" Schumacher CLEARLY does not like Batman. What a crap movie! Tommy Lee Jones is basically hanging around chewing scenery WHILE still playing inept boss type to Jim Carrey's version of Jim Carrey doing The Riddler. Nicole Kidman, what the hell is she doing in this? And they replaced both Batman and Harvey Dent Calrissian between movies, why the hell did they keep that bumbling version of Commissioner Gordon?

There's no continuity in the movie; much of it is clearly trying to look like the first two Burton Batman movies, but there are some completely out of place CG shots of Gotham City which look nothing like anything else in the movie.

Anyway, never have to watch that again. Though a 6 year old may be a little young for Nolan's version of Batman...

Oh, hey. I think I was misremembering Another 48 Hours as a Beverly Hills Cop sequel.

Which is funny, because that mistake is the only time that movie has provided a laugh. :lol

an entire movie designed to employ a twist ending. no time spent on developing characters, or any sort of quality scares. just a twist ending with ~70 minutes of setup.

Grave Encounters

another entry in the "found footage" genre. it's about a fictional group of paranormal investigators and their investigation of a haunted insane asylum. IMO when the atmosphere is built up well enough, "found footage" is probably one of my favorite current ways of displaying horror. i enjoy the tight viewing angles and night vision. I would say this movie isn't really a high water mark for the genre but it's OK, especially when stuff actually starts happening. the first 45 minutes were a bit annoying due to a caste of completely unlikable characters. however when stuff did start happening I was enjoying it quite a bit. there's a really great sound layer over everything with heavy bass, faint voices, things clanking, etc. it gives everything a super tense and claustrophobic feel because it's always as if something is right there with you and you're never safe. that really helps with the first person shooting style IMO.

So yeah from that point on it's pretty cool. i appreciated the reliance on sound over anything else but there are a few blatant visual scares with "ghost monsters" (best way I can describe them).

would say it's definitely worth the watch for fans of the genre.

Hey, this is the movie my brother's friend made and he produced.  haha.  Glad you enjoyed it!  I'll pass that along.  I saw the movie like 2 years ago in beta form and it was alriiiiiight.  Never seen the finished cut.

so Netflix just got carpet bombed by Korea's film industry, with also substantial attacks from the artillery of Hong Kong, Japan, and Thailand.

I'm almost paralyzed with indecision as what to watch first.  So many of the dozens (like a hundred) new films are sorta obscure to a westerner like me, but there's some of them that I've had in my peripheral vision for a long time and gave up on ever seeing a legit R1 release (I'm sorry I pirated you Silmido, I didn't think America ever wanted you).

what I'm saying is, expect a Nightmare Detective 2 review and lots of other weird shit in the coming weeks and months.

:bow Netflix :bow2

oh, and speaking of Korean auters, shouldn't you guys be at least a little excited for Arnie's next?  All recent developments are promising.  You can't hate a movie with Harry Dean Stanton in it, that's just a fact.

speaking of which, their recent films have been actually pretty decent so far.  Ain't seen Wake Wood and Let Me In yet, but they've both reviewed very well, especially well for genre films.

The Resident is a also non-shitty, if rather slight early 90's style "the psycho is someone you trust" thriller.  Long live the new Hammer.  Also, I'm looking forward to The Wicker Tree.

Pretty much, this.

It's really smart of Radcliffe to go for something cagey, possibly arty and cultish, after spending so much time as The Boy Wizard. Hopefully this will give him a chance to so some range.

Sure but at least the first two were fantastic with a filled theater.  Boring as hell at home but with a theater full of people it's just Halloween style fun.  By the numbers movies can have redeeming factors.  Burlesque did not (besides Christina Aguilera's fat tits)

I just watched Robocop, and it holds up very well. I was expecting a cheesy, generic 80s action flick but it turned out to be a lot better than I anticipated. This isn't nostalgia talking either, I had never seen it before. I really liked the television broadcasts that broke up the scenes, like a news report on a satellite laser from the Star Wars program misfiring and killing 100+ people, or the commercial for the 6000 SUX, a new car that gets less than 10 miles a gallon. :lol It was a clever bit of worldbuilding.

I hope the 2 sequels are pretty good too, I'll be watching them next.

ABANDON HOPE.

Frank Miller wrote, apparently, a decent script for Robocop 2, which was so mishandled, he refused to have anything to do with Hollywood ever again. He was only swayed later when the eventual-director of Sin City showed him how faithful he intended to be to Miller's original work. In short, it's bad.

In even-shorter, Robocop 3 makes 2 look superb.

Actually, he wrote Robocop 2 and then became disillusioned after a lot of his ideas got tossed. Three years later, he came back to write Robocop 3 hoping that he might have better success, but the same thing happened.

First 2 acts are same old bs.  If you liked the first two you'll like it.

The third act... Holy shit haha some awesome shit. Worth paying for IMO. Atmosphere is fucking nailed and its actually scary.

By the way, nothing from the trailer is in the final film. Nothing. There are similar scenes but nothing is the same which made it a cool surprise.

Its almost impossible to talk about Red State without contextualizing it, and that's really too bad, because when viewed in a vacuum, its a moderately impressive, grubby little B-thriller with a mean streak.

So here comes the context, Kevin Smith's films have been pretty much half-assed when it comes to filmmaking technique.  This film is obviously meant to break his own boundaries both in style and content.  Its a film coming from a guy who's big specialty was comedy that has little use for it, except in only the rare and ultra bleak comic relief.  Its the type of film you can't really imagine a happy guy making, its angry, its cynical, and its lack of humanity or any sort of characters that don't suck certainly don't help in its efforts to build tension.  So as a thriller, its a little slack, but for the most part works pretty well.

It works well because the narrative structure isn't content to stay with the callow kids who get in trouble in the first act, or the cultish nutbags who endanger them in the second, or the federal agents who intervene later on.  The roving center helps keep things interesting, and unpredictable, and when those surprises come, they can actually surprise you.  And the characters may lack depth but the performances are mostly spot on.

Its not a waste of time, but its only technically an ambitious film that hits the mark more often then not.  Coming from any other veteran filmmaker or even an experienced genre technician this would be the same film of modest pleasures but wouldn't get much attention.  Coming from Kevin Smith its a revelation, too bad I don't grade on a curve.

I re-watched Spanglish with the wife, having seen it on a flight away from my family a few years back.

Despite being a two-hanky chick flick, this movie has something for every man: Paz Vega for normal guys, Shelbie Bruce for Fistfulofmetal, and Tea Leoni for guys who wish they were fucking Mulder's wife. Or someone crazy. Tea Leoni is hot, but you don't get to be that fit without some serious mental baggage or Israeli trainers.

The film handles cultural differences deftly, if a little heavy-handedly. There are some moments of exceptional dialog in a sea of competent and believable lines, all rendered well by the cast. Looking at James L. Brooks' filmography, it's not hard to see why I liked the movie; he's a constant mid-range winner. All last night I was watching this, though, I mistakenly remembered it as being an Albert Brooks film. Oops.

This is my favorite genre of film.  Quirky indie romance comedy coming of age drama.  It's no Rushmore, but it was a solid little film.  The cinematography was GORGEOUS.  Seriously very, very well shot throughout.  Some nice music by Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets guy as well.  Has some really great and touching scenes and the ending credits are awesome.  On the downside the film lacked energy was kind of plodding at times and the writing just wasn't that clever though it gets +.5 for being British.  Still it's a recommendable film.  Maybe a 3.5/4 (so 3/4 if you're British).

The trailer made it seem like it was slightly less void of skill and tact than that shitty Uwe Boll movie where the dude goes around shooting people.  I hate that fucking movie.

And I'm one of those people who just didn't care for Exit Through The Gift Shop.  Maybe it was the mind blowing expectations that EB and GAF created for it.  But I watched it and just thought "meh" and continued my day.

The Last Exorcism

ohh man does this movie fall a part at the end. it's a movie about an exorcism (duh) but the twist is that it's "found footage" and the priest doing the exorcism is trying to prove they are fake (hence the camera crew with him). shit goes crazy when it turns out the exorcism is real!!!!!!!

anyway, the middle portion of the movie is decently creepy. the "possession" were a bit too ripped off of The Exorcism of Emily Rose though.

then suddenly in the last act the film comes grinding to a complete full stop and reverses into FULL SPEED distinguished mentally-challenged fellow straight to the end. it's really awful and completely ruins it.

Collision Course

This is a buddy-cop movie from 1988 with Jay Leno [seriously] and Pat Morita. Basically, Jay Leno tries his hardest to be a white Eddie Murphy but totally fails because...well...he's JAY LENO, Pat Morita totally embarrasses himself, and there's a lot of casual racism thrown around, like, A LOT of casual racism. But at least it's got a pretty good 80's soundtrack. Other than that, WOW, this is stupendously bad, but laughably so.

True Legend.  Well it's a yuen woo ping film.  so the choreography is good and everything else is bad.  It relied a bit too much on CGI for me, but the physical action was quite good.

I really liked Iron Monkey, but True Legend left a really sour taste in my mouth [especially because of the final third of the movie, which was just totally horrible]. And I was really into it early on.

i'll admit that the final battle was pretty whack, but thankfully there was so many other fights to make up for it.  i didn't like the god of wuxa stuff, but then, you know, it's a woo ping film, so it's not like it will be too grounded in reality.

That was absolutely horrible-looking, and I have otherwise enjoyed Adam Sandler's movies.

finally saw Drive.  Holy Fuck awesome.

The theater was full of women who were woefully unprepared for the level of violence involved.

Escape from New York.

80's vibe is good and I got laugh from Snake's gadgets, as well as Snake himself. Music was nice, movie itself is not so good.
