The second half is highly unfortunate, still one of the best scifi movies of the past decade. Unfortunately, that's kind of faint praise.

Yes, it started out incredibly interesting, very much a portrait of various personality types, showing how they relate to each other under pressure. Each character is likable and questionable in their own way. But right around the point of the first major disaster, Michelle Kwan's character stops making much sense, and then things just continue spiraling out of control.

Ideally, the second half of the movie would have gone further into the breakdown of the crew and their own personal insanities, rather than introducing an outside force that simply murders them all.

Watching a tale of two sisters, this movie is freaky as fuck

It also makes NO SENSE so far, which makes it kind of hard to watch since there's no grounding in reality at all with how everyone is acting.

Hope it makes some sense by the end

Didn't care for that at all and I usually am down with asian horror films.

Great looking film. Very nice sets and wonderful cinematography. The horror scenes have immaculate tension and are SERIOUSLY scary. However the pacing is ungodly slow, and the majority of the film is a family drama without tension. It also makes no sense until you understand the twist. On second viewing the family drama might be interesting, but on first viewing it's just a bunch of crazy people shouting for no reason and freaking out all the time. This gets boring. The story is ok, but it's basically a 30 page short story that is a 120 min movie. It's just way too long and I found it pretty damn dull as a result.

you should find a detailed explanation of it and the korean folk tale on which it is based and then watch it again.

i did the same thing. hated it, then researched it (at someone else's insistence) and then upon re-watching it, it was amazing.

I liked the American remake better, The Uninvited. But my hate for the original is based more on my hate for Korean movies in general. The pacing, writing and directing all bug the shit out of me. I don't get Korean films.

I have nothing against them on a technical level. Because there are certain things that work but that I hate. For example there are some beautiful scenes in Thirst but when I watched it all I could think was "please hurry the fuck along". It's personal taste that keeps me from enjoying Korean movies. Too slow paced for me and I hate the dialogue in most films.

Apparently it's a "kids" movie that will bore most non-awesome kids, but is actually awesome for everyone else. Might get an initial blowback from early viewers but I hope sticks around to not be just in the dustbin of "cult movies". Didn't look cheap.

I like the Oldboy/Lady Vengeance/Thirst/JSA's guys stuff quite a bit.

Most of the other Korean cinema I've seen has been pretty bad.

started a 60's historical/monarchal drama kick -- mainly because I've been missing a lot of meat in dialogue and drama in my film diet lately

first up, A Man for All Seasons (1966)

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Great writing and cast. Loved Robert Shaw's portrayal of Henry VIII. Also, when Thomas More's destitute family visit him in confinement, that scene has some of the best written dialogue I've heard in a film for a long time.

take shelter - walked into the theater not knowing much about the film other than michael shannon was playing the lead who was having some sort of apolocyptic visions--which sounded perfect given his recent performance in boardwalk. it wasn't exactly what i expected but it reminded me alot of another film which deals with the same topic, clean, shaven, which i highly recommend if you love character studies.

paranormal activity 3- wtf? why are trying to have some sort of continuity with this series? whatever, the film was fun enough though it wasn't nearly as freightning as the 1st with alot of the scares coming off as being cheap and forced as well as the ending being insultingly distinguished mentally-challenged.

come and see- i've had this film for nearly 5 years and just got around to watching it. a masterpiece. don't even read a single synopsis or watch a trailer, just get this damn film in your hands somehow.

To be fair, Blade Runner isn't like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep either. I can see him coming up with a good idea within the same world. Effectively executing that vision on film will be the problem, just as with the original Blade Runner

Fast Five

Haven't seen any of the others, but figured I'd watch this one considering the buzz around it. Lived up to my expectations and then some, I'd say. Felt like an old-school action movie, light on actual plot but makes up for it with lots of well-directed energy. They went way over the top with a lot of the stuff, too, like the whole chase scene at the end to name one. And I'll say this as well: it out-did The Expendables at doing essentially the same thing.

Watched The Skin I Live In. I haven't seen too many movies by Almodovar but I've liked this one the best so far. Subtle thriller with good story and actors.

Watched Fight Club again for the first time in five years. Everything about this movie holds up. The soundtrack is still great, too. Helena Bonham Carter was very hot in a skanky gross kind of way. I hear Brad Pitt achieved 'dose abs by using HGH -- seems plausible.

The Jeter books are so, so bad. Nothing left to subtlety. And while they're not a sequel to DADoES, they -do- try to marry Blade Runner and the book together, as well as trying to explain a few continuity errors in the movie, IIRC. Every single time Jeter sets up a parallel between the movie or book, he ends up calling out specific attention to, saying, hey, look, it's a reference to this other thing. That happened. In that movie you saw. I hear Jeter and Dick were friends, but this is not a nice thing to do to a friend's legacy.

And, yeah, I'd rather see Scott do Altered Carbon.

I saw it on Friday night at the theater. I like the suspense direction that Almodovar has been going with his last few films.
