Watched "The Guard" yesterday. Good, entertaining movie. Directed by the brother of the director of In Bruges. Film is in some regards similar, by taking a boring environment and bringing a gangster story it. Same sort of black humour as well. Gerry Boyle is just great.

I watched Contagion over the weekend. It's the Andromeda Strain if it had been written/created by human beings with some small consideration for people's emotions and shit. I think that's the best thing I can say about it. Otherwise, it follows the various cliches of a epidemic/disaster flick too closely to be notable beyond its handling of the science and procedure behind outbreaks of the sort (which I am assured by Wikipedia is a relatively accurate portrayal), and chases a few too many plot lines without giving any the attention they might deserve, particularly Marion Cotillard's, which could've been cut entirely without sacrifice.

I kept getting distracted by Demetri Martin, too. He'd appear for a second, and then I'd spent the next few minutes wondering if that was really Demetri Martin and why he might be in this movie.

I watched The Innkeepers over the weekend. I loved it. I actually thought it was much better than The House of the Devil. It had some really great humor and they wrote the dbag coworker's character perfectly. I really loved it. It nailed the atmosphere and was actually a little creepy. A really well done genre movie through and through. And opposite of what I've seen others say, I think the buildup and payoff was done a lot better than The House of the Devil.

I watched The Innkeepers over the weekend. I loved it. I actually thought it was much better than The House of the Devil. Cool, looking forward to it. I loved House Of The Devil but I do feel like the buildup was better than the actual payoff, which seemed a bit rushed. It just seems like it was missing something

I think showing the mother crawling out of the attic room would have been the perfect addition to make it feel complete. Instead the door opens, you don't see anything, and the main character blacks out

yeah, I'm planning on watching it soon. mainly watched the first one because it's expiring on netflix tomorrow. good reason as any to check out a movie I've wanted to watch.

I loved Hobo with a Shotgun. It perfectly emulated the excess and depravity of a Troma film. Only thing I didn't like were the opening credits, which were more 70's/blaxploitation or something, and didn't really fit the rest of the film.

I watched Episode I in 3D and was disappointed that the entire crowd wasn't there to provide their own Rifftrax. Also, that is the most flat 3D I have ever seen. PATHETIC.

Lucas tricked me into seeing Episode I once. It was a couple hours before I realized how badly I had been duped. I'll not be seeing it again just for 3D.

Netflix streaming has been great for me to catch up on a decade of non-American films. I have finally seen Pan's Labyrinth and Intacto. Next is Timecrimes and that OSS 117.

I don't get it either. Both are really great but Innkeepers just feels like a more well rounded film.

Yep. The movie was really good but the ending was one hell of a cock tease. The Innkeepers has a proper ending and well paced climax.

Watched the first half of Deadfall and then turned it off. Greatest 60 minutes in cinema history.

It's on Netflix streaming. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend setting aside a full two hours to watch the first half and then to rewind and watch it again.

there's still some pretty good weirdness to come that keeps things if not good, then at least interesting. Its a terrible film but its so dang batshit I kinda love it, poor Micheal Biehn was probably really excited that he got a proper leading role in that movie.

God bless Killer Elite and its stupid, stupid dreams. Its a trashy movie that wants to be an honest mediatation on the futility of revenge, but then forgets that classy films usually don't have any gratuitious nudity or awesome fist fight and stunt sequences. But even though its a B movie with A film asperations, its demerits as a "real and important film" don't really work against it as an entertaining bit of cinema. It doesn't matter that Jason Statham plays an unconvincing Aussie, or that there's so much very painfully obvious symbolism, or that the most shocking plot twist instead comes off as hilarious, it doesn't matter because it still entertains.

So what if you can't take this very serious movie seriously, that doesn't detract from all the fun parts that are there on purpose or the ones that are there accidentally. After the last few underwhelming Statham films, its at least nice to have one that fails due to over ambition, and not from lacking in it. Still a good time though.

The least believable aspect of Fast Five was Vin Diesel as a match for The Rock. It was still awesome. The action is great. Can't wait for Fast Six. Or a spin off that's just The Rock jumping through walls and fucking up criminals.

It has some vague similarities to The Damned United and that movie is way better, even though I enjoy the subject matter of Moneyball more. But it's so boring.

I'm refusing to read Dance with dragons until GRRM has finished off the whole series, i don't see the point investing my valuable and important time in something that may have an unsatisfactory conclusion, ie he pops his clogs whilst banging a hot nubile teen fan, and either Terry Goodkind or AC Grayling is drafted in to finish them off.

Oh I also watched True Grit by the Jew brothers, was really hoping for a styling update with Big Lebowski leanings, but was sadly disappointed. Lebowski will never be topped I fear, and Fargo was shit.

Your Highness a.k.a. the stoner fantasy movie by the guys who did pineapple express. uhhhh wtf. movie's not really very good, and most of the laughs you'll get from this movie come from profanity and gross-out jokes. this part was great though

Hard Revenge Milly is not the worst Japanese v-cinema I've ever seen, but it is pretty close. There is some excuse about it being a post-apocalyptic future, I guess so it can explain some of her prosthetic gear, but otherwise the story is not served much by it being set in "the future." Special effects vary from laughably bad to surprisingly good. Most of the money appears spent in the final shot of the bad guy's face, which is kind of neat. Mostly just gross-out and silly, it's only 43 minutes, so whatever. There's a sequel, I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it. The first 5 minutes looks like it took more money than half of the first film.

Billy Madison made me laugh a few times, but is pretty darned stupid, and appears to be an excuse to string together a number of Sandler schticks from SNL. Was this his first feature film? Happy Gilmore is such a better movie. Steve Buscemi's bit is the best joke in the movie.

Rented Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie on my iPad and watched here at work this morning. It's more of what you'd expect of T&E minus the censorship. Kind of surprised it got an "R" rating, especially with stuff like the dick piercing scene in it. Can't imagine what that'll look like on a large movie screen

Billy Madison was indeed Adam Sandlers first film, and Happy Gilmore was his second. Part of the reason the second film was so much stronger is because Judd Apatow had his hands in it.

The Woman- Based on its reputation (from non-horror audences) I basically expected this to be nearly two hours of just absolute brutal violence against women. Thankfully it was not that at all. I enjoy the two other Lucky McKee films I've seen (May, The Woods) so I should have had a bit more faith.

The film set up is simple. A man finds a feral woman while hunting. He decides to capture her and try to civilize her. He keeps her in a storage she and gets his family involved in her upkeep. Shit goes horribly horribly horribly wrong for almost all involved. It's got some very good character building as it tries to be more than just fraught moments. The acting and the script is very good giving great insight into all of the characters who are given great and subtle moments to build their characters.

It's certainly worth watching.

It's not a remake, more like a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. The end credit sequences are actually fucking quite good. And the bit with Sarandon was ok.

Basically the whole film encapsulates the serious business issues that Hollywood has with reimaginies. Is it the Jews or the nigeers? Or maybe the Turks or armeniams. I don't know.

Maybe a good vampire film will be the one where vampires are hunted by soul onanists. That's right guys, soul masturbators. And you heard it here first.

Finally got around to seeing Jeunet + Caro's Delicatessen. It is every bit as delicate, whimsical and charming as I'd hoped, which is saying something for a postapocalyptic movie about cannibals. French cannibals.

Why was everyone so unwilling to eat lentils, though? They're a bean, so it's pretty good protein.

Seriously disliked Insidious. A lot of people whose opinion I respect suggested it so I gave it a whirl. Blergh.

Yesterday I continued to clear out my Netflix queue.

The Bleeding House- I enjoyed it quite a bit. It features a wonderful loquacious villain and it kind of strikes me as what a Flannery O'Connor home invasion film would be like. It gets kind of goofy in parts but there are some great characters here and you'll most likely "solve" the central mystery to the film long before it's actually revealed.

Pontypool- I loved it. It is probably the best distillation of everything I like in the "weird" genre as a film. You have a central "what if" conceit that is somewhat unique, you have strong characters who are well acted, you have several bizarre mind melting moments which rely upon your imagination rather than being told explicitly what is going on and it doesn't cheat.

Machate Maidens Unleashed - A Highly entertaining documentary on the 60s Filipino Exploitation film. Boobs, blood and beasts in nearly every frame. From the directors who gave us Not Quite Hollywood which was about Australian exploitation films.

I loved all but the third act even though it ripped off Poltergeist so much in the 2nd act. The third act was still entertaining but it brought the movie down as a whole for me.

Edit: It seemed like a homage to old paranormal movies that was broken down and made easily digestible for today's audience. Considering who created and directed it it's not surprising. They were at the helm of the two biggest horror franchises of the last decade. It's made for people who can no longer sit through slow burning horror films of the pre-2000 era and IMO it did a pretty decent job of it. I loved the design and concept even though the execution was quite flawed in many ways.

I guess I didn't like Insidious all that much because I'd already seen it a dozen times before in the various Poltergeist knockoffs which came out in the 80s.

Yeah it's just a rehash of various haunted house movies from 80's. I didn't grow up seeing them and I still haven't seen most of them (I only saw Poltergeist like less than a year ago) so while it was familiar it wasn't played out with me.

Ultimately a disappointment. Stephen Chow's character is more serious this time [instead of the loveable jerk he usually plays] as well as playing a smaller role, and the kid's acting ranges from "gets the job done" to not very good at all. The story doesn't help much, since it's a very light on plot ET-inspired kid-meets-alien movie with tonal shifts that are too abrupt and plot lines that are built up and then resolved as quickly as possible. There are still flashes of the manic brilliance that Chow's recent movies are known for, but not anywhere close to the amount needed to cover over all the acting, writing, and plot shortcomings.
