Watched The Hunger Games today w/ the GF. Excellent companion piece to the film but a horrible stand alone story. It makes the crazy racist twitter posts against Rue really fucking stupid because she was an excellent character. http://jezebel.com/5896408/racist-hunger-games-fans-dont-care-how-much-money-the-movie-made I wish the film were about 3 hours long, because what what it focused on, it did quite well (District 12 before the Reaping, Katniss as Rambo, etc) but I hated some things about the film (Peeta and Liam Hemsworth were both horrible and way underdeveloped. the love triangle in the book was neglected altogether here. Liam was more of a friend).

You Are The Apple of My Eye. An EXCELLENT Taiwanese film about growing up and going to high school / college in the 90s. Was able to make me semi nostalgic for a time and place I never experienced on my own. Absolutely hilarious in places and heart breaking in others, esp when you realize that the film and book which it is based on were created by the director to tell a girl how much he loved her a decade ago. Still quite good.

Expect the Unexpected. Turns out I had seen this before, but it had been so long that I had forgotten the ending

I'm currently watching East Meets West 2011 by a long time collaborator of War Kai Wong. Its, uh, amazing. Best comedy dealing w/ the Cantonese Music Industry since Heavenly Kings. Totally fucking crazy film. If you liked Kung Fu Hustle, you'll probably enjoy this. Shit's bananas.

damn, Safe House (aka "I can't Believe its not a Tony Scott movie") was shitty as hell. I can understand Denzel being rather fond of those 20 million dollar checks, but man, please be a little more discriminating about the everything else that comes with it. When you're always better then the movies you're in, perhaps its time to upgrade your surroundings.

Finally saw Moonrise Kingdom last night. Loved it, but the male lead was a little awkward, which was the point, but still got on my nerves at times. You can tell this would've been Schwartzman if it were done when he was a kid still.

For having a little one at home, we've managed to see four movies in the theater now: Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Avengers, Prometheus and Moonrise Kingdom. Not bad.

Also saw Jeff Who Lives at Home on the flight to Omaha and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on the flight back from Omaha.

currently watching Love Strikes / Moteki which is the Relationship thread committed to film. Crazy fantasy elements and karaoke / teen idol group sing-a-longs punctuate the emotional parts of the film giving it a strong fantastical bent.

movie gets kind of brutal in places. lots of broken hearts and bad life choices in this film. it's kind of funny because it's the inverse of the manic-pixie genre in that nothing is overly precocious or quirky for the sake of being quirky. It focuses on people who are kind of indie scenesters in that two thirds of the threesome of leads work in the 'indie" (i'm guessing, my knowledge of what constitutes "indie hipster trash" in japan is quite low) blogosphere (the final character designs toy cars like these ).

another thing about Hara Kiri, its a straight drama shot in 3D.

and its American release lags behind the Japanese one by a year exactly, and since then he's finished three other films and is working on a fourth. Two of those are traditional Japanese drama films that will probably not see anything in the way of international travel. One of them is a wacky kids slapstick movie, and the other is the damn near unabridged adaptation of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

135 minutes.

Hurray! Its not Black Dyanmite 2, Boo! Ah, well, any movie starring Luis Guzman deserves a chance.

I saw The Battle of Algiers in school. Something like 80% of the class left and most of who remained fell asleep. I remember really liking it.

Watched a few flicks over the last few days:

Immortals - Liked this a lot more than I expected to. The plot is weak (because of course it is), but Singh was the perfect guy for a myth epic. He comes about as close as I can imagine to capturing real visual transcendency of divine beings.

Hunger - Another visual masterpiece; Fassbender turns in a great performance as an IRA soldier incarcerated during the Thatcher-era phase-out of political prisoner status, engaged in a hunger-strike in protest of civil rights violations. Instantly a Steve McQueen fan.

The Chaser - I had to turn this off about half way through. Contrived police incompetence as a plot device in film and television is a big pet peeve of mine, and this one is especially idiotic. Reading the plot summary on wikipedia, it doesn't sound like I missed anything I hadn't already predicted.

I liked The Chaser because of the characters not the plot. also, the ending was a lot of fun.

If you want an insane Korean film, I just watched this thing called Secret Love this week.

This is a black comedy but no one bothered to tell the lead characters. This movie gets insanely convoluted with the twin brothers switching identities (they all look alike, amirite?!) and Yeon-yi bouncing between brother to brother. The film ramps up the Korean melodrama to like 13 at the end and the ending 1) comes out of nowehre and 2) makes no sense and 3) is complicated further with a stupid ass "happy ending" coda.

while watching this I swerved between "i can't believe I'm seeing this", "wait, what is going on?", and "who the fuck wrote this shit?"

It's not GOOD but it contains enough of those moments of frisson that I was absolutely glued to the screen.

Also, lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of sex.

I think the slow mo is a bit justified if they're going to showcase that level of violence. Usually slow mo is used to show people flying around after impossibly powerful kicks

Not just the violence. It's how, presumably, everyone sees Dredd bust in and shoot everyone in super slow mo but can't react fast enough to stop him. It's like sleep paralysis worked into an action scene.

And I agree that it'll lose its charm if overused.

That's a good point and the way time returns to normal shows Dredd dispatching dudes really fast. I hope they play with this sense of speed in that, as you said, it showcases how efficient Dredd is.

I spent the last few weeks watching every movie that Stephen Chow has directed (aside from CJ7), and they were all good to great. He's definitely one of my favorite actors & directors now. Anyone familiar with some of the older stuff he's done? I'm getting A Chinese Odyssey 1 & 2, but other than that I'm not sure what else is worth watching.

I'm starting to watch some early Jackie Chan movies as well. I've only seen Wheels on Meals and Police Story so far, and both of them were great. Jackie was a complete beast in the 80s.

How far back are we talking? Well, as far as pre-1995 goes, the two Chinese Odyssey movies are pretty good [the first was better than the second, I thought], Hail the Judge is good, Fight Back to School is great [FBTS II is okay, but not as good], and From Beijin with Love is good.
