What's the verdict on The Roost?  I'm in the mood for some Ti West and I've never seen it.

Depends on your mindset as to whether or not you can handle something really low budget. For the miniscule budget that he had for his first film I thought it was a good first effort. It still has his eye for old fashion style pacing and has a few fun moments (mainly with the Cryptkeeper-esque storyteller played by Tom Noonan) and the suspense is well done. I felt it was a worth a watch just to see how far he's come as a director.

On the Stephen Chow recommendations...

All for the Winner, his blockbuster spoof of the then ubiquitous "cool-ass gambler" genre is pretty damn great.  Its even nice enough to contextualize some of its gags, which is very handy.  It also set the blueprint for many of Chow's future starring efforts.

King of Comedy has the best John Woo spoof ever, as well as some pretty damn brilliant non sequiters.  Its a little heavy on the melodrama, but if you've seen any decent amount of Canto-cinema you should be inured to it by now.

The God of Cookery is the second best (Tsui Hark's classic The Chinese Feast wins out) Iron Chef-esque movie ever made and is a damn riot to boot.

and there's more great stuff in his career, but I still need to dig more.

Girl with a dragon tattoo - thought the beginning was pretty weak, and there were a lot of sloppy scenes. One that made me really laugh was mikael investigating, reading through some documents highlighting specific lines cut with pages turning, then back to highlighting important parts of he document except he's just highlighting consecutive line after line on the same page like a bored student :lol overall a very affecting good thriller though.

Batman begins - don't know why I didn't watch this area ago. Great flick.

So Hugo's actually good in 3d? Heard bad things about it from friends but I was looking for a new 3d film t o try out since I hardly ever use the 3d on my tv. Thought tintin was pretty bad, I had a little fun with it but wouldn't  watch again, was going to wait for avengers but for all the big effects and solid direction i still found it pretty sterile and boring and god damn Robert downey Jr is a douche.

Actually found Ted funny. The banter between Wahlberg and Ted is great and yet it wasn't as indulgent as it could have been (basing this off of what I've seen from Family Guy).

Every time I think about Batman Begins the videogame similarities just are so huge. The whole film is basically the best vg adaptation so far.

God of Cookery is probably my least favorite Stephen Chow movie. I just didn't think it was as funny as his other stuff, and the whole cooking theme isn't particularly interesting to me. I still liked it though - all of his movies are good. I'd probably rank them like this: Shaolin Soccer > Kung Fu Hustle > King of Comedy > Love on Delivery > From Beijing With Love > Forbidden City Cop > God of Cookery.

I also think Love on Delivery is a little underrated, compared to his other movies. I loved this scene in particular: #t=19m10s. It's so obvious that everything's going to go poorly for him, but I still thought it was hilarious. And the Garfield stuff is so good. :lol

Watched a few flicks over the last few days:

Immortals - Liked this a lot more than I expected to.  The plot is weak (because of course it is), but Singh was the perfect guy for a myth epic.  He comes about as close as I can imagine to capturing real visual transcendency of divine beings.

Hunger - Another visual masterpiece; Fassbender turns in a great performance as an IRA soldier incarcerated during the Thatcher-era phase-out of political prisoner status, engaged in a hunger-strike in protest of civil rights violations.  Instantly a Steve McQueen fan.

The Chaser - I had to turn this off about half way through.  Contrived police incompetence as a plot device in film and television is a big pet peeve of mine, and this one is especially idiotic.  Reading the plot summary on wikipedia, it doesn't sound like I missed anything I hadn't already predicted.

IRA 'soldier'? :yuck

Over the weekend I watched The Lost Bladesman a Donnie Yen movie which came out a few years ago.  It was pretty amazing.  Probably his best film since he resurfaced with SPL / Killzone.  Everything is horrible except the martial arts though and there are times when the MA gets a little too modern (slow motion CGI etc).

also watched Hammer film The Reptile.  There's a xenophobic little film for you!  The bad guys are Borean snake cultists, one of whom is an actual snake person who bites a lot of white dudes, killing them.  Good atmosphere, good snake person stuff, bad "drawing room" portions.

LA Story.  Eh.  Not as funny as when it was first released and I feel that it's certainly too much "of the moment" with the satire so it's more of a nostalgia piece than anything worth revisiting now.  Also features MC Shan as a rapping waiter

50/50

You know, not only was this very good, but it was not the kind of film I expected it to be.  I thought it was going to be one of those "you gotta live your life while you can" movies, but it was actually more personal and more of a well done drama about human relations.  I really liked it.

The Amazing Spiderman

Did a mid-week evening at the movies and saw this.  It was actually pretty good!  I liked it more than the 3 Raimi Spidermans.  Raimi Spiderman was enjoyable but it always felt off.  I disliked his picks for most of the actors and the movies always felt too cheesy and ridiculous.  I thought this one worked better because of two things: The script & The actors.  The script was intelligent for a superhero movie.  Everything felt fairly realistic, flowed well, and the lines were good without being cheesy.  And then the actors were GREAT.  Garfield is THE BEST PETER PARKER EVER.  He's so perfect for the role.  Makes the Toby Maguire spiderman look even dumber.  Emma Stone was great and the guy who played Dr. Conners did a very good job as well.  Because this trio gave good performances and good delivery of a non-stupid script, the movie was good!

Also, like I'm noticing in a lot of superhero origin movies, the first half origin story is notably better than the 2nd half VS. VILLAIN story.  I think in this case it was especially noticeable because Garfield did such a great Peter Parker that was really fun watching him discover his powers and learn to use them as Spiderman.  He definitely makes a better Peter Parker than Spiderman.  Spiderman still needs a bit more wise cracking in his movies.

But overall, nice movie.  I think I will enjoy the next ones with this cast as long as the scripts are good.

It's weird, I really like Sam Raimi, but I don't like any of his Spiderman movies (#2 is a solid film I will admit).  Evil Dead series, A Simple Plan, Drag me to Hell.  All fantastic stuff.  I just don't like him as a mainstream comic book movie director.
