Shane Black :hyper :hyper

Trailer wasn't bad either. I like RDJ's Stark enough that I'll see it just for him even if it ends up being mediocre.

What the fuck is that voice though

I had the same reactions.

Shane Black will make this great, I hope. Ben Kingsley is pretty much perfect in anything he does, so the voice doesn't worry me.

If Evil Dead ends with the survivors getting sucked back through time into the Medevils, maybe the sequel could actually be awesome. Set around the Crusades or something.

Saw Argo last night.  Great fucking film.  My favorite scene is

where they're discussing different ways to get them out and the team is shooting them all down.  Now THAT is good writing.  Most movies would never go through the trouble of trying to explain why it's such a difficult situation.

It does a good job of balancing the tone throughout, and that scene's a good example of why.  Besides establishing that Affleck's character is the Best At What He Does, it earns the audience's trust, so that we'll cooperate with the kinda goofy premise. Compare with "the school needs money so... Kevin James enters an MMA contest! but he's fat!"

Movie was like Charlie Wilson's War + Bowfinger + a heist movie.  Just a really fun, well-executed movie.

Agreed.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The scene takes what's obviously a far fetched situation and paints it with more down to earth tones.  It also makes every moment past that, including the frolicking with the Hollywood elite actually important.  I'll agree that it earns our trust and even further I'd say it essentially makes the whole movie.  The pacing was also perfect.  It never dwells on one aspect for too long.  It was a very technically accomplished film from all angles IMO.
[close]

I heard it wasn't as good as GBG or The Town.  While the content matter may not grab people the same way I think it's on a completely other level technically.  I'll see after multiple viewings but it's probably my favorite Affleck film.

GBG drags in the middle, and The Town's final heist kind of fizzles compared to the ones earlier in the movie. Then there's the two different versions of The Town as the ending on the Extended really changes the tone. Argo is his best by far.

In NYC i saw this pretty entertaining Korean / Hong Kong film called The Thieves which starts off like an Asian Ocean's 11 which takes some surprisingly dark turns in the end with some really good and unexpected action set pieces.  If you can see it, do so but you may have to wait for a video release.

To appreciate just how much Cloud Atlas bombed during it's first week, you only need to know that it was half of what Speed Racer made on its opening weekend. So, yeah, not good.

I wanted to see it but I need catheter for movies that long. Fuck getting old! I don't know how I'm gonna have the will power to see the Hobbit. Let alone I have to figure out where I'm gonna see the fucking movie. Do I want Dolby Atmos, 64fps 3D, IMAX, D-BOX? I got no clue, why I can't have all 4 things at one theater.

Just got back from Taichi Zero, the first trilogy which I read was "steampunk meets Kung Fu Hustle meets Scott Pilgrim" but it's even better because it's an ANTI-steampunk isolationist KFH meets SP.  It was really a lot of fun and full of neat camera work and great flourishes that really marry the Scott Pilgrim style to high fantasy Wu Xia film.  Great stuff and full of 70s and 80s HK cameos.  From the director of the CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED House of Fury and the not horrible Enter the Phoenix.

That club is not as small as you might think. DVD/Bluray sales say it did better with home sales than it did in theaters. I loved that freaking movie and wanted a sequel so badly (still do.)

Hmm maybe I will check it out.  I do love Cloud Atlas and I admire the ambition of the picture just from the face of it. What makes me apprehensive is, well, the last time the Wachowskis worked on something with a scope this large I wanted to kill myself.  They neglected good script writing because they had an Important Message they had to convey (Praise Be Neo-Christ).  It would be just terrible to see them take the material in Cloud Atlas so seriously that they end up spending 3 hours trying to convince me of what an insightful thing it is they're trying to communicate.

I'll probably just wait for the DVD or whatever.

So what's the EB Consensus on this? I thought it was pretty good. Very brooding, tense film that explodes into some pretty crazy shit. Gosling's performance is one of the most...emotionless I've seen in awhile.

I think Disney gets Lucasarts, ILM, etc., but don't quote me on that.

Quote
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and "evergreen" Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Yeah, I wonder. It's been an airtight deal, from the amount of shock rippling through the internets right now.

Also feeling somewhat strange, at the amount of hope I'm feeling over a non-Lucas Star Wars movie. He really messed up the prequels.

Would this include lucasart (game company)?

LucasArts gonna get shut down in 5, 4, 3, 2...

Actually, I just remembered hearing about the new head of LucasFilm decrying the existence of LucasArts the other day, talking about "WHY DO WE OWN THIS? IT MAKES US NO MONEY."

Framed in the context of jettisoning stuff which costs money prior to purchase, it makes a little more sense, I guess.

As did Empire and Jedi.

What I'm getting at is there is probably an outline or a script or something for VII. You don't just buy a company and then be like "oh yeah, new Star Wars movie in a couple years." I'd love to know how long this deal has been in the works, and when the idea of making Episode VII materialized.

The most recent Universal Soldier is astonishingly good, the last 20 mins or so in particular. It's also got some sleazy 70's bits, and also really trippy. Action fans need to see this ASAP.
