How can Skyfall be out here for two weeks already but not in the US?

Finally we get something early.

Don't blame you. The plots are similar. Only with one being time travel based.

And they both star Tom Cruise!

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.
But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Skyfall is great.  I don't know if I like it more than Casino Royale, but it's one of the better Bond movies and a definite step up from the last one.  And it looks ridiculously good!

Something odd with it was how it felt like a mix of old Bond, new Bond, and The Dark Knight.  Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both have a similar feel to me.  It's not a negative or anything.  Sometimes the movie felt like it was pandering to Bond fans (because of the anniversary, I suppose), which is cool as a Bond fan, but occasionally came off as too much.

Um, I think if you're a Bond fan you'll appreciate it more.  And the Javier Bardem is awesome in it*

*
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I thought his overall story made him a sympathetic villain.  This is compared to the villain-ass villains from most Bond movies.  All Silva wanted was justice and some Bond dick  :'(

Thoroughly enjoyed Skyfall. Bardem was one of the better villains in recent Bond history.

Still missing a bit of the stealthy Bond, but at least it strayed from the Bourne-Bond of Quantum of Solace.

Dragon Pit fight was classic Bond though. Good stuff.

Yeah that world war z trailer looks like a zombie movie with novel name slapped on it. I can't relate any of that to the book besides the Yonkers battle apparently.

That looks like it has zero to do with the book, but oh well.

Yeah, I'm getting nothing from it other than "zombie movie with brad pitt." That's not a bad thing, but doesn't appear to be vignette-based, or even have anything to do with the book's "looking back" perspective.

Could just be the way the trailer is cut, but I'll probably go see it anyway just for the scenes of the military fighting against zombie hordes.

Maybe not, based on what I read last night.  I didn't know much about it going in, and I only went with IMAX because someone else wanted to, but the aspect ratio was similar to IMAX shot scenes in Dark Knight/Rises (more image on the top and bottom).  Although, allegedly, that taller aspect ratio wasn't the intended aspect ratio and shots are framed with the standard format in mind.  So what you see in standard theaters is truer to how it's supposed to look, and the extra image is superfluous to get people to pay more.  That's what some people say, at least.  And this isn't considering picture and audio quality improvements.

Personally, I thought it looked amazing in IMAX but have no comparison with the standard print.  Considering IMAX is nearly double the cost of standard around here, it's probably not worth the extra money if you're unsure.

I'm really curious to see which aspect ratio they'll put on the blu-ray.

Out of the three recent Bond's Skyfall was certainly the most beautifully shot. Shanghai was fucking gorgeous and they used the lights to wonderful effect. It felt like it went on for way too long though and I think we needed more of Bardem instead of 'M' and Bond's backstory.

I don't really rank individual stuff, but I agree that Skyfall is below Goldeneye.  I still think Goldeneye is one of the best Bond films.  Skyfall is more inline with The Living Daylight or 2nd tier or something.

yeah, but that's nothing to do with quality.

besides, skyfall is kinda worse at that, in the context of the film.  A laser watch isn't so wild in a universe where a woman orgasms as she crushes men's bodies with her thighs.

Bardem is always good.

In movies-you've-almost-seen news, I noticed the local theater had The Expendables 2 playing at 10:15AM. No-one else in my family is interested in this movie, and matinee shows are cheap. I had missed this in the theaters in the USA, and for once I felt stoked about Japan's delayed release schedule.

I went down there fast as I could and arrived at 10:10, only to find that the poster outside was old, and it's not showing at that time anymore.  :'(

Bardem is always good.  He ran wild with an otherwise banal and poorly-written character and turned it into the most entertaining aspect of the movie.  And he did it without kicking the bucket before its release.

I watched Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter because someone suggested it was hilariously bad.  it's not.  It's just really, really bad.  Somehow the filmmakers didn't realize they were making a B movie, and instead went fully serious with it.  It's truly one of the worst things I've ever seen.

Deus Ex movie coming up:

CBS Films announced today that Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will direct the screen adaptation of the iconic Square Enix video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Derrickson will also write the screenplay for the film with C. Robert Cargill (Sinister). Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh are attached to produce the film with John P. Middleton serving as Executive Producer.

Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.

"Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence,” said Derrickson, who continued, “By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can't wait to bring it to the big screen."

The Deus Ex franchise was originally introduced in June 2000. Its latest entry, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, launched to universal acclaim in 2011, ranking #1 across global sales charts and earning over 100 industry awards. Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Deus Ex: Human Revolution will serve as the primary template for the film.

Executive Vice President of Production Maria Faillace and Creative Executive Alex Ginno are overseeing the project for CBS Films.

Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are represented by WME and managed by Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Their legal is handled by Jackoway, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Austen, Mandelbaum, Morris & Klein.

just got back from Argo

pretty good flick. Affleck has been pretty money since he's started directing but I feel he still has a few issues that I hope get smoothed out. primarily it's the pacing of his films that i find odd. he spends a lot of time on certain plot elements and then the meat of the movie is a bit rushed through. i thought it was especially obvious in The Town. in this movie i felt too much time was spent in the set for the Argo operation and not enough time on the operation itself.

i really liked the very late 70's shot styles that he used during the Hollywood section. like the helicopter shot of a building that zooms in on the name of the building. or the wide stationary shot of a car turning into a driveway. really did evoke the era.

the entire last part of the movie felt pretty old school. it's a super simple situation and not something you typically see in the climax of a movie. it also brought together all the pieces from the entire movie and made them relevant. you understood why all the work was put in place to create this fake movie.

i particulary liked the part where:

The guy who speak Farsi stepped up to the plate and helped smooth over the tension by explaining the movie. i was surprised by how well that character arc was handled.

so yea. it's a really well made movie. enjoyed quite a bit.

Amazon Prime delivers! :bow2

I take it back fuck you Amazon!
Available in HD for playback on Kindle Fire HD, Xbox 360, PS3, Roku, TiVO or other Amazon Instant Video HD compatible devices :piss2

Well, what the hell were you trying to watch it on?

On my PC :-*

You're right. That's pretty stupid if it won't stream to a PC.

I think it is just inconsistent, it does let you watch some stuff in HD on PC, but HD to Amazon apparently means 480P not sure if it like that on consoles etc haven't tried it yet.

Saw Lincoln. Daniel Day-Lewis probably has Best Actor in a lock and Tommy Lee Jones Best Supporting.

Theater was completely packed thanks to Twilight. They had Twilight on four screens and Lincoln on one so there wasn't a single seat open because all the smart people went to see Lincoln and the distinguished mentally-challenged fellows were watching a werewolf want to fuck a baby.
